I agree with that, it's not racist to tell people to adapt or get out if they don't like the way things work in a certain country. What I was talking about was the whole "our culture" thing which I admit I got hung up on. It just made me snap because here in Canada for example where racism is subtle and not in your face, native people get treated like dirt most of the time and the jokes never stop. And all you ever hear on the talk shows and stuff is how they need to integrate into "Canadian Society" and stop living on reserves etc.

Yeah shit happens and the losers have to mix in. But I hate the attitude that us often portrayed by not just white people but other races as well who believe their way of life is "the" way of life.

Hey, they can keep their culture. If they want to act like they still live in India or Iran or whatever, that's fine. It's when they want others to follow THERE way of doing things and get angry seeing how we do it. That is where the conflicts start. They don't have to follow our culture but understand and respect it. Which sadly more and more aren't these days.

I like how Australians get the blame for coming out and fucking up the Aborigines... Pretty sure that blame sits with the poms.
You're blaming the stolen generation on the poms?

edit... lost, stolen whatever

Im trying to understand this but cant really. Equality has only recently started making strides?, i take it you mean over the last 50 years or so which fit into those years that mean squat to you.

George Bush? seriously guy? its not even in context.
I'm talking about radical Islamic groups and how no amount of air drops and flyers are going to get them to drop all their thoughts and beliefs right away, like the Americans have been trying to do for the last seven years. What I'm saying is that racism especially is prevalent amongst older people no matter what country they're from, hence saying "It was 300 years ago, get over it" is meaningless since ideas survive for a long time and are passed down when life can't(Hello ongoing middle east warfare).

Blacks were being slapped around just 42 years ago in the U.S. Slavery was only abolished 145 years ago.

Every nation is racist or nationalist, otherwise it wont survive in its historic form, I don`t want zillions of Chinese or Indian people in my country because I want my country to keep its historical face but I am not racist, so yeah I hate when people blame everything on racism...

uhh what does that even mean? Historical face? This topic reminds me of the time I was on the bus and I overheard a few uni students talking about joining "If you aren't white, go to hell" group on Facebook.

Well i probably just find it so ridiculous that your comparing some people who are basically saying "love it or leave it" to radical Islamic groups. People are entitled to have their own opinions even if they are small minded, racist or whatever and yeah you aren't going to change that over night.

And with the Middle East thing i hope you arent saying the Crusades are one of the reasons for today's wars. Anyways its going to continue to get passed down from generation to generation and thats never going to change, but each generation its going to die a bit more.

Is this a serious question? Yes you should TRY and learn the language or phrases I don't see why this is a big deal.

The reason I asked is because it seems to often come up as "racist" if somebody is expected to learn English when moving to/living in an English-speaking country. And yet, when you ask the question the other way around, it isn't seen as racist to expect the same thing.

I'm a Chinese Australian; been living in Sydney for over 30 years since I was a little tike. I still take racist stabs every now and then from bogans who I can hardly classify as having a basic command of the English language and haven't even been breathing for half as long as I've been in this country.

I take that shit on the chin because I know it's a minority. And who knows - they might change. One day.

On the other hand, the opinions that the OP are so concerned about resonate very strongly with me. Nothing on this earth pisses me off more than being called by a random telemarketer who starts talking to me in Mandarin or Cantonese. When I tell them I'd rather speak in English, they say "but don't you speak Chinese?" My response is always "The languages I can speak are none of your business. The language of Australia is English, and if you're incapable of selling whatever it is you're trying to sell in English, then you can fuck off". Bear in mind, I over the phone, you wouldn't know I was Chinese because I don't have the slightest accent.

Equally, I've worked as an English tutor for countless students of Chinese, Greek and Lebanese heritage - all of them born in Australia - yet they are raised not to speak English at home. The parents are the ones who see the problem and hire me to help their children integrate into the rest of society, but it's the kids themselves who CHOOSE TO SHUN ENGLISH because that's their 'badge of honour' for being marginalised at some stage in their lives.

I don't know if it'll take a good lesson or a sermon or years of experience to teach these people that such an attitude, if taken to its logical conclusion, will not end well; and they should stop behaving as though the world owes them a favour.

I guess it can be tough for people who are used to being surrounded by their own culture to see people coming into what they perceive as their cultural 'home base' and choosing not to integrate. While I don't entirely sympathize, I kind of get where they are coming from.

I do think that people should make an effort to work with others in the country they choose to live in. It's not just a plot of land, it's also a group of people, and we should all learn to live together. That cuts BOTH ways, for natives and immigrants.

It's cool to be racist, everything is racist these days!

no, not everything is racist
it's only racist if it has a lot of white people in it

If an English speaker moves to Japan, should they be expected to learn to speak Japanese? Learn Chinese if they move to China? Learn Korean if they move to South Korea?
Yep, but watch the same people who bitch about people not speaking English in their country bitch about how they have to learn another language to get along.

why is this even a question? Ofcourse they should

hell my uncle is just a guest worker in Austria and he learned german despite going there with 16 and sucking at it

if you move somewhere the first thing you should do is learn the motherfucking language and I would expect this from anyone no matter his skin color, ethnicity or nationality

I've never understood this. Over the years I've learned some of the filthiest curses and the most awesome pick-up lines in several languages - which is fucking awesome at parties because it gives you the courage to say shit you would never say in English. I love it any time a Filo girl asks me to demonstrate my knowledge of her language, because the only phrase I can say like a native is "I have a big dick. Let's fuck". Works like a fucking charm :D

Thats what most Aussies on NeoGaf do guy, cry like bitches about their country, then grab their ankles and wait for the replies from countries with massively shittier track records.

(I'm Greek.) Thing is, I wouldn't mind if they were just like, oh dear I don't like being here. It's the fact they tell me specifically their country of origin is SO MUCH BETTER THAN AUSTRALIA that shits me. If it's so great, why are you here? Even some members of my family are criminal to this.

Other than that, I don't have a problem with anyone.

It's sad to say that those particular men/women won't. They're bred that way and will reject any sort of change to the contrary. Bogans are goddamn stubbourn.

From what I can observe, I find that both sides are at fault. It's not like many Australian-born kids go out of their way to befriend people from other culture unless the later approaches first. On the other hand, due to their cultural upbringing and their feel that Australians don't like them, some people from other cultures are reluctant to approach Australians first. What you have then a vicious cycle where neither party wants to extend the hand of friendship.

As a side note, as an immigrant, although I have a lot of Australian (Caucasians) friends, all of them are the ones with foreign cultural background (French, Polish, South African, Russian, Germany, Swedish, etc). The typical Australians (the one who usually go "what's up mate?") usually never interested to befriend me even if I approach them first. Or rather the friendship never goes beyond an acquaintance. They just don't seem to have any interest in being friends with someone outside their comfort zone/culture.

I don't know if this experience is shared by anyone else, but I definitely know that it's the same for one of my mates out at Perth: I was raised thinking I was white. Seriously. I was raised to demand, do and expect the same things as anyone else. It's a blessing in that it gives me the confidence to behave in a way that I frankly don't experience racism that much at all. Mostly, I experience racism from (ironically) other ethnic groups, or I'll hear about it on TV; but it's exceptionally rare that I should experience it from white folk. It's a curse in that when I do experience genuine racism, the hypocrisy of it all hits that much harder.

No cause theres black Australians, gay Australians, asian Australians, muslim Australians, white Australians and every other kind of Australian, hes lumping everyone together, very unracist of him.

Its like when i say dumb fucking seppo piece of shit, im lumping them all together.

It's an island with an underclass, with a European heritage parachuted into an Asian environment.

It is not a 'nation of' anything or anybody in particular, any more than it is made so by the facts that insularity is a barely escapable condition of nationhood and awkwardness a likely consequence of diversity.

I would lock this thread on the grounds of the histrionic obtuseness of its title, let alone having read what has followed.

Some Australian's are racist. Is everyone in Australia racist? No.

In my opinion Australia is one of the least racist countries on earth from what iv experienced living here and visiting other countries.

I get really pissed off whenever I hear someone (usually some uppity liberal Americans) complaining about "that's not how we do it in my country" regarding the forty million or so ways in which Korea differs to their country.

Is that the Australian equivalent of The Sun or something? I'm sure I felt my brain leaking just reading it.

Murdoch has never got quite as carried away in Australian print media as he did in Britain and the US. There's not been a direct equivalent; although some of his tabloids are trash, they are not violently offensive and lurid on a Sun scale.

I never would have thought the Aussies would be so sensitive to what appears to be a quite obvious joke from that 'Bitch' poster. I'm disappointed, in some perverse way.

Amusing to see the 'if you don't like our country, get out!' guys in this thread as well. :D

Post of the day. So much racism (or what you may inaccurately call positive discrimination) goes down in my country, yet isn't called such as it is perpetuated by a minority, so how can it be racism ?

!!!!!!!!!!

I dunno if we didn't get along at first, industrian, but dammit, this makes up for all of it.

I actually enjoyed working with Americans UNTIL they brought up this idea they deserve something as it's their 'right'. I'd often hear, "but it isn't RIGHT" or "it's not RIGHT that they do that". Right in what context? May be right in America, but it might not be right in another country. That was certainly the biggest disconnect I felt with them; though I'd still rather work with Yanks than Canucks (maybe it was the school I was at, but they were so freakin lazy).

Anyways, on topic, again, I don't personally think all Aussies are racist, in fact, before going to Korea and speaking to the students there, I thought all Aussies didn't care where you came from or what you spoke. It was just surprising how many bad stories I heard. Anecdotal or not, it was certainly more information I than what I had before.

Has anyone mentioned the magical Mega Bogan trend of Southern Cross tattoos? That shit should be illegal... Sure it 'should' just be a sign of patriotism, but it's basically been co-opted into a banner of White Is Right bullshit.

If anyone goes to a summer festival, that's the hive of the moronic shirtless cunts that get them.
