Battlefield: Bad Company demo dated

if people hate this game then they must hate most of the fps' on the market.

Not at all.

The battlefield is my favorite multiplayer game series, but after playing several matches online and giving this game many chances, I just don't find it fun to play. At first I was judging it as a Battlefield game and it fails at that, then I judged it as just a fun shooter to play, but it isn't even very fun in that regard either. I'm sure it's the best console-only gamers can do with a battlefield game, but so many aspects of this game just feel way off.

Also, I really don't understand why they have the whole 'screen color fade when dying' thing going on. Usually that is in games with recharging health, so why did they bother putting that in this game? the reason it works in those other games is because it goes away after a second or two in cover. It isn't fun to have the entire picture messed up because you are shot and have to find a support unit to give you a med pack while in that view the entire time.

the best things about the game are the gunfire sfx and the ability to chop trees down with machine gun fire.

-terrible:

controls
gunplay
graphics, horrible grain filter and tearing
ai , it's dumb, but not cod 4 dumb. ai bug:

when they come over the bridge and setup position on the right hand side they vanish into thin air and reappear to tread the same path, this will happen over and over if you don't kill them.

multiplayer is a borefest like resistance and cod4

4/10

the haze demo was better.

I'm not so sure about the singleplayer, but I'm having fun w/ the multiplayer in the demo so far. I'm actually tempted to buy this sooner or later, its pretty fun.

At first, it sucked hard, and I didn't understand how to play, but I'm slowly getting used to the controls, and I've got a routine down for what I do. I tend to slot into first place almost every time, and that usually involves either using anti-tank mines, or something else, depending on the situation.

I've also come to learn how to properly fly the helicopter. I'm no master at it, but once I figured that I should probably try first-person view, it controls loads better.

Just played the single player...felt very 'meh' to be honest.

When the cutscenes stopped and the game started, the drop in graphical quality was very jarring too. I really don't think it looks great, as a whole. Lighting is nice, perhaps, but IQ, texturing, the trees...meh, meh, meh.

Maybe I should try the multiplayer.

Really? I didn't notice any drop in quality it looks pretty much identical IMO.

Did some side by side comparisons between the PS3 and the 360 version.

Textures (which are good) are pretty much the same. Same with polygon detail.
IQ is about the same as well. Minor jaggies are on both versions.
Tearing is a PS3 exclusive tho. There is none in the 360 version.
Biggest difference is in the "sparks resolution". Oddly, PS3 sparks are like half the res of the 360 version ones. On the PS3 you can clearly see flaming squares floating around during explosions while on 360 they are just tiny flaming dots as how they should be.

And that's it. Didn't try online on 360.

Overall a better conversion job than COD4. An improvement.
Also this.

PS3 demo also looks a bit more washed out. Hard to see in my shitty cellphone photos, but check the sandbags for instance. Could be remedied with image settings perhaps. Also, turn on your noise reduction filters. The game has some stupid grain filter applied to it which just makes things look nasty. At least my TV's noise reduction was very effective at getting rid of it, looks a wee bit blurrier though.

As for the rest of the game, I like it quite a bit, although there are also a lot of things I'm bothered by, but still, great game. Let's see what what updates the Conquest patch will bring, I guess.

What a disappointment. I was in the multiplayer beta and was disappointed that the game felt clunky and unfinished, I had chalked it up to being a beta and moved on.
With this new demo I see a lot of the game hasn't been fixed and sadly the single player portion feels really rough.
Multiplayer still has a lot of hit detection problems, lags to the point of nearly unplayable (for most of the games I got into last night) and still feels really dull. The class system is okay but there seems to be very little reason for teamwork.

Single player for me is a huge disappointment, the voice acting is good and the premise for the story is okay but the game world is a mixed bag. I've seen a few really odd bugs (guys warping in/out of vehicles, odd sound glitches), the AI is dumb as a sack of shit, the respawn after you're dead thing sucks and feels out of place.. almost unfinished to me.

I really wanted this game to be good but after seeing the EA weapon microtransaction rapement I got a sinking feeling that the game was going down the dark path. Clunky game with heavy use of downloadables means no buy for me. What a shame because the early trailers were so promising.

I can't understand the hate for this game. I've had a blast playing the demo and I will definitely pick up the full version. Finally a console battlefield worth playing!

Care to elaborate on the bat-shit insanity you're spewing?

The tearing is barely noticeable during actual gameplay but horrible in the cutscenes. It is a really pretty game running at an awesome framerate. Not really my cup of tea though.

The only graphical difference between the two versions is the 360 output has a higher contrast as usual.

I'm a huge fan of the Battlefield games, but this is just a giant steaming turd. I couldn't tell you what happened.

The net code on the ancient 360 version of Battlefield:MC was tight enough, what the hell happened? What a laggy mess.

As for the game itself, it just felt "off". The pre-game interface is terrible, and that carries through to things like weapon switching and controlling the action. The whole thing just felt amazingly sloppy and unfinished to me.

At least MGSO drops next week so I can forget about this.

I agree,IMO it's a great demo and a lot of fun, will definately pick up the full game when it's out.

i played lots of BF:V and BF2 on PC.
and i LOVE Bad Company! it's the most fun ive had in a game in a long while.
the lag is gone for the most part last time i played (360)

try running with the Demo Kit. it works best for that map imo unless you want to snipe from the sides.

i do not miss prone at all, its a great looking game, sounds great, and yes the controls need a little getting used to but it works best when you think about it. (drive with left trigger and shoot with right trigger sounds smart to me)

I didn't think that they could make the lag any worse, but damned this shit is unplayable. For some reason I thought that they Beta was a bit smoother. This is horrible.

I found that odd too, I mean the beta was laggy but regularly playable with the right people. After playing the demo last night I didn't have one game where the lag wasn't so bad that sniping was possible.

Any good helicopter pilots in here? What type of armament does the pilot have in the Apache? Just FFARs(rockets)? No Hellfire(Anti-Tank Missiles) and do they home in or are they just linear? I was in a gunship with a guy last night and he was just raking up the points, the gunner seat felt pretty lonely with just a cannon to fire but it chewed up infantry. I miss the Hellfire mini-game of guiding the rockets.

Indeed. I might not get the full game at launch but it's tempting..

and just because: PS3 / zero lag here.

Just played the demo. The game is fuck awesome! No idea what the haters are on about.

I'm actually sad that it's not on the PC, which is something I never expected to say about a Battlefield game. :lol

Umm... you must've played the PS3 version correct? I didn't really have those problems at all. Also I can't believe you say the gunplay is terrible... but hey, whatever, that's your opinion.

After playing Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and trying this demo, it feels like I'm playing with thin air.

Lacks substance.
I get that feeling as well. At least with Vegas 2, Halo 3, CoD4, Resistance, etc etc you can easily tell when you're shooting and hitting an enemy and when you're being shot at. With this there's just no feedback. The gunplay (and even the controls) are terrible, and fuck, it's even a step down from Modern Combat 360, a two year old last-gen port.

...That said, when I customized the heli controls to my liking (and when the game wasn't laggy as all hell), I did have a lot of fun, just tearing up things like I was in MC.

(also, to answer your question, there's only linear rockets to fire from the pilot's seat).

I stand there firing and I dont feel like im doing any damage to the person directly infront of me. Most of the time i'm not because of the horrible lag. Ive found shooting big targets like tanks that arent moving to be fun though, at least i dont need to shoot so far infron of where they are at the moment :P

I really want to like this game, but I just cant justify buying it while its this laggy in every game i have joined.

The destruction in single player was better than i'd expected. The field of view seems really narrow especially for a widescreen game. Looks like BF2 graphically. Online was alright but I kept getting killed by someone who seemed invisible.

my favourite thing about the game is the HEALTH is not that stupid gears/uncharted/every other game in the last 2 years. I love the point system, like CS. Love it.

Its pretty fun

The bullets need more impact though when you shooting a person, sometimes i cant tell whether my bullets are hitting an enemy

I have had ZERO lag with the PS3 version. ZE-RO.

I've had a few little hiccups, but the PS3 demo ran MUCH smoother for me than the 360 one online. Far better. I have no idea why.

Bullshit. The Bad Company demo is great. Haze? lol. Either you're crazy or just trying to be funny.

Never played a Battlefield game in my life... but actually loved this demo (PS3). this is coming from someone who has been putting off games for the past week because of MGS4 hype but decided the internet wasn't safe so I might as well game.

Things I loved:

- The fact that when I died, I came back and everything in the world was exactly where it left off. This magically replaced normal feelings of "Ugh, I have to do this ish again???". Brilliant. Any other games do this? Imagine my surprise when the tank that just killed me was right there when I respawned... I didn't have to take out several enemies again just to see the tank arrive again. So awesome.

- Destruction. While not the greatest, it was quite fun hiding from a tank inside of a house knowing the walls were blowing in around me. Exciting stuff right there.

- Personality. I didn't think I'd be giving a fuck about some army guys in a demo... but they played off each other well.

Something I didn't like though was that there could have been some pretty good gunfights on top of the hill, but as soon as I reached the top, a cutscene started and *poof* all the enemies were gone. I was looking forward to flanking them as I thought the AI was pretty decent.

Wait, what the fuck man? My stats just got reset. I am now on fucking level one, and I was almost a three dammit. Also, this game just doesn't feel like "it." COD4 is still the #1 shooting game, and I need to play that instead of Halo 3, which I got tired of a long time ago. Anyone know how much trade in value Halo 3 is worth?

I like the atmosphere and stuff, but I had some issues:

-Couldn't hear ANY dialog until I was able to move my character around.
-The film filter over the graphics is horrible.
-The controls were not to my liking, although with time I'm sure I'd adapt.
-Enemies seemed to know where I was instantly, once my squad started shooting at them. I was hidden behind a hill and my squad spotted an enemy and started firing, and then all of the sudden i was getting hit from somewhere.

Pros:
-Destructible environment
-atmosphere
-Typical Battlefield experience that I remember from the PC.

Ever heard of bioshock? haha

I actually really like this game. The graphics and sfx are DOPE beyond belief! I agree with the lack of impact when shooting the enemy though..hopefully they fix it because remember demos have to be finished a while before the game is actually done.

I had no lag issues at all last night...

I've been spoiled by the smoothness of CoD4, but I really got into this after spending a half hour with it. Great stuff.
Same here; whereas with CoD4 I got more bored the more time I spent with it, with this I'm enjoying it more and more; probably because there's so much more to learn and because its definitely harder to get kills due to the aiming (its not bad or anything, its just a long leap away from the CoD4 snap into-iron-sights-for-the kill kinda gameplay...takes some getting used to). Single player was decent, gave a good feel of actually being some type of battlefield, though the constant cutscenes were annoying. For me, it looks like single player will be < CoD4, while multi > than.

I played it for a while last night and didn't like it all. The weapons are super quiet in multiplayer, there's no conquest (at launch anyways) and gold rush is not a good substitute (not to say different is bad, Titan mode in 2142 was awesome, this just isn't) the button placement proves incredibly awkward, the health meter is small while the 'I'm getting shot' filter doesn't do much to tell you how hurt or healthy you are, the humor in single player feels super forced, among numerous other tiny issues that just add up to a pretty piss poor experience (imo). The destruction was okay, though not remotely as impressive as I thought is going to be; just like Black all over again :(

The game is kinda ok, controls are shit out of the gate, but I'm betting you can change them (either in the demo or full game). Also, instant full health every 10 seconds is kinda stupid, but whatever. Destructible walls was nice, but stupid that the entire building can't collapse. But thank goodness for the demo :)
