Oh, I get it! It's because the 3DS is for kids! Nintendo only makes products aimed at children, right? Hilarious.

No, I was actually going for the fact that the actual form of the 3DS:

looks like shit. Furthermore, Nintendo have color coded the 3DS to make it look like a fisherprice device.

the Vita remains one of the best looking devices :O
really like the black one (I have a white one)

the 3DS XL looks great too

Man, I really regret not buying one of those PS1+LCD bundles when they were $50 a while back. :( Maybe I can still find a lightly used one.

I think all smart devices are incredibly boring-looking :/

Oh hey that's a screen alright. That's where the design ends, really, there's so much you can do in terms of looks with the rest of the device.

Yeah... When the first ones were released, I though they looked really cool, but after the novelty wore off they just kinda started looking all the same to me :/.

A few photos of my 3DS XL that I took for GAF when the system was released:

Wait, that cant be real, are you kidding me?!

not only do they put in blackspace, but they frame the game INSIDE a Pocket? I dont care how nostalgic it brings, why should you have to play that on a smaller screen?

So the game boy game isn't all blown up and blurry. It brings it closer to mimicking the size of the game boy screen, and thus looking closer to how it did natively.

You can play in full-screen mode too.

Some people really don't like the "blurring" that happens, though, but I think it looks just fine:

It looks really cool too, I don't usually like game-screen frames either. Although an option for a large size would be nice too if it doesn't already have it. - there you go, as Rm88~ says above.
