Because Lists Are Fun: Let's Rank the Resident Evil Series

re4 / wii
re1 remake
reoutbreakfile2
re0
re5
re1
re3
re2
reoutbreak
recv
redeadlysilence
redeadaim
reumbrellachronicles
regaiden
resurvivor

not sure if I should get darkside chronicles. hate those really

edit: actually I don't like re0 more than outbreak2. no idea why I stacked it this way

I'd rather tier them:

God Tier: Resident Evil 4
Lesser God Tier: Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, REmake, Resident Evil 5
Pretty Awesome for a Mortal: Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Shit Tier: Resident Evil Zero

All I know is that the original games aren't actually all that much fun to play any more. REmake and RE2 are two of my all time favorite games, but they'll only stay that way so long as I don't actually try to play them.

I also know I'm having way more fun with Darkside Chronicles than I did with RE5. I'm not on-board with the out of control GAF RE5 hate, it's actually really good... just not as good as I thought it was going to be, probably because I haven't played it multiplayer.

I kind of hope they do reboot the series, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories style. Which is kind of ironic.

Of those I've played in the series...

RE5
RE4
REmake
RE0
RE1
RE2
RE3

I don't understand how RE5 is getting so much hate while RE4 is getting so much love. RE5 is based on the same game, just with a ton of improvements... coop, smoother aiming, better quick aiming, drastically improved mercenaries mode, no Ashley to escort around, realtime inventory, proximity mines, stomps! Looking from a gameplay perspective, there's no doubt RE5 is better. I think I maybe like the level design in RE4 a little better overall (village during the thunderstorm is one of my favourite environments in the series), but the RE5 level design is still good, it still follows a lot of the same principles as in RE4... like how the enemies will almost always be able to find a way to flank you no matter where you are.

I wonder if nostalgia comes into play here. I'd like to see someone play a few hours of RE5, and then play a few hours of RE4, and then come back and say they honestly thought RE4 was more fun to play.

obviously because re4 is where the real change happened. and re5 is just a refinement. but I somewhat agree. I was really disappointed with re5 at first aswell, but have learned to love it.

RE 2
RE 4
RE: CV
RE 3
RE
RE 5
RE 0

2 and 4 are the stand outs for me. Would say the rest are pretty equal.

Resident evil 2 deserves a remake like resident evil 1 on gamecube (dont give me the darkside chronicles BS, thats guncon, resident evil 2 deserves a better treatment).

Resident evil 4 is one of the best games ever

Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil Remake

Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil CV
Resident Evil 3

Resident Evil 0

Not really a concrete list I would say. Resident 4, Resident Evil 2 and REmake are the top 3 in the series easily. The rest are fairly equal, each with their own strengths and weaknesses to balance them out (RE1, RECV, RE3, RE5).

RE0 however is the worst of the series as far as main games go.

Shame at the hate that RE5 gets, it's probably the most "fun" game out of all the RE games thanks to its co-op. Has the best Mercenaries mode as well.

Wait, cvxfreak hasn't posted the definitive ranking list yet? ;)

Anyways, I'd go:

RE4
RE:CV
RE5
RE1 (Remake)
RE2
RE1
RE0
RE3

RE5 wasn't a refinement though. The set pieces, enemy design, inventory system, and weapon economy were all decidedly worse.

1. RE4
2. REmake
3. RE2
4. RE3

I haven't played 5 yet because the price is still too high for the gimped single player or Code Veronica because it never interested me. Oh, I forgot about 0. Never played that one either. The real time character switching didn't sound appealing.

P.S. I'm not counting 1 because REmake is better in every way.

RE 4
RE CV
RE 3
RE 2
RE 5
REmake
RE 0

RE4 tops the list for obvious reasons. CV will always be my favourite classic RE title, mainly for the story and the fantastic range of locations. I loved the Alfred/Alexa thing, and the game felt so epic by the time it was finished. RE 3 and RE 2 are pretty close, but the Nemesis mechanic gives RE 3 the edge for me. Both are awesome games.

I liked REmake well enough, but despite the graphics it was no RE 2, 3 or CV; and since I hadn't played RE1 there was no room for nostalgia. RE 5 was a huge letdown. Having the same core gameplay mechanics as RE4 isn't enough. The level design, characters, atmosphere and charm were nowhere to be found, and besides co-op in which I had no interest it brought nothing new to the table. RE0 was worth playing, but pretty weak. When playing it, I remember thinking "I'm glad I'm not missing out on this, but I will never play it again."

wow RE3 is consistantly at the bottom of your lists :(

The problem with 3 (and 5 for that matter) is that it lives in the shadow of its immediate predecessor. 2 was such a fantastically crafted game, everyone couldn't wait for the sequel, and what do we get? RE3. 1 character, no A/B playthroughs, whole areas ripped right out of RE2, storyline a total rehash of 2, no cool challenge modes, lamer weapons Bleh.

RE3 is great though! You spend way more time in actual Raccoon City (best setting in the history of the series), it introduced The Mercenaries which is a pretty cool challenge mode if you ask me, and the added weapons (via ammo mixing and via killing the Nemesis for rewards) were awesome. It introduced the quick turn, which was an excellent addition. Also it's variable as hell per playthrough based on your actions even though it lacks the Zapping system. :( so underrated

I couldn't agree with you more

RE5 is, in every single way, a gameplay improvement from RE4. The sole fact that the entire game can be played multiplayer co-op just clinches it as a funner game to me. RE4 already left the whole slow-paced survival-horror genre behind when it switched to a fast-paced action game - even when it first came out people realized this and RE5 simply stuck with the same formula. RE4 wasn't scary or methodical and you definitely were never strapped for ammunition, at least, not any more than you were in RE5... in fact RE5 on the harder difficulty settings was even more intense with it's ammo conservation concept.

As far as story goes I can't even begin to fathom how people could defend the story line in Resident Evil 4 as not being campy. It's never really been an issue to me, I've always considered the Resident Evil games campy and just accept that fact. I would agree that RE5 gets a little ridiculous near the very end (Chris punching rocks, lol) but not enough to knock it down that much below RE4 caliber story telling. The same can be said about level design, Resident Evil 4 did have a few locations that were more interesting/atmospheric than anything in Resident Evil 5 but, as an entire package, both games had there share of good levels and bad levels. I won't even get into all of RE4's faults (Ashley, inventory management, etc...) that are usually justified by fans somehow though.

The main factor is that people were more impressed with Resident Evil 4's, then, relatively new gameplay concepts. Tons of next-gen games took the RE4 formula and refined it for their respective genres and when RE5 came out it was already old news. On the same token I take it some people aren't blessed with friends to play co-op with (not that you have no friends, just no one that wants to play RE5 with you) which I can imagine greatly diminishes the experience. Playing co-op the game is undeniably better though IMO. It's just baffling that people would genuinely rate RE4 so high and then RE5 so low and stick the other games in between, even if you can justify RE4 as being the better of the two games it still should be right next to RE5 on any list.

Edit: I also chalk it up to the fact that a lot of people listing RE5 probably either didn't finish it or DID finish it but in a very skewed manner. Like playing through half the game online with a Japanese dude who had beaten the story and was running through with an unlimited ammo mini-gun collecting trinkets. I honestly can't comment much on the computer AI in single-player since I didn't do it much but it was at least manageable if you told it to stay still with a bolt action rifle or let it run around with a stun rod.

This man is right. Kudos.

Upon further thought:

2 - The quintessential RE game
CV - This game was so damn epic, great locations, genuinely creepy feel about it, loads of awesome challenge modes
4 - A fantastic action game. It's interesting they ditched "RE4: Devil May Cry" because it wasn't Resident Evil enough, but green-lighted this but there you have it
RE - Excellent remake made with loving care, though I get the feeling I would have like it better if I'd never played the first one.
3 - Reasons I said earlier, feels like a very cheap cash-in on RE2's success
1 - A fantastic game in its own right but outdated mechanics make it comparatively weaker
0 - I kind of liked this game but it started the whole forced co-op idea so down it goes
5 - average action game with fantastic models, poor RE game. Forced co-op was just the icing on the shitty cake

1. RE:CV
2. RE4
3. RE1 REmake
4. RE2
5. RE5
6. Resident Evil 1 Original
7. RE3
8. RE0

Haven't played
Gaiden (Will force myself to play this one day)
Either Outbreak
Any of the 3 Gun Survivors
Both Chronicles (Intend to buy these however)
Mobile phone games (F these)

Didn't realize the most enjoyable co-op ever was done before. I finally understand why everyone loves RE4 so much...

Resident Evil isn't about co-op. It's about being alone in a zombie infested town/city/country/whatever. Co-op is what made the game survival-action and not survival horror. If you want that, fine, but it didn't quench the survival horror thirst for many fans. Hell, the only scary part of the game for me was
Sheva's A.I.'s inability to work a fuckin' lamp

Bleh, all they did was flesh out the Hunk/Tofo scenarios to make Mercs, just another example of the lazy RE2 rehashing. The setting, yeah it was good, but it was basically the same as RE2, so damn cheap. Ammo mixing was a nice idea, as was quick turn, but these are the sort of things you'd see in a $10 expansion pack, not a full blown sequel. If RE2 didn't exist, I guarantee you people would hold RE3 in a lot higher regard.

4 > 2 > 3 = C:V > 1 > 5 >>>>> 0

I wasn't disappointed with RE5 but I guess the fact that I totally forgot about it when making the list says a lot :(

With that logic, RE1 should be on top of everybody's lists alongside RE4. RE1 and RE4 are the only two games in the series to set the gameplay basis which all other games in the series has used. RE2 is regarded very highly by many, but that's one of the least original games in the series.

Methinks people are just sillypants.

Just the one's I've played:

1: Resident Evil 2
2: Resident Evil 1 Remake
3: Resident Evil Directors Cut
4: Resident Evil Code Veronica
5: Resident Evil 0
6: Resident Evil 4
7: Resident Evil 3

REmake
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil Code Veronica
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil DS

RE2
RE1
RE3
RECV
RE4
RE5

I liked RE4 but compared to the previous ones the new action adventure REs are definitely worse. RE4 and RE5 could have been a completely different franchise and noone would even think that they're similar to REs.

1. REmake
2. Resident Evil 4
3. Resident Evil 2
4. Code Veronica
5. Resident Evil 0
6. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
7. Resident Evil 5

Mercs was WAY better than Hunk/Tofu. It contained many different paths instead of one linear journey, possible side stops for extra points with a heavy element of risk/reward, and it actually unlocked some pretty awesome stuff for the main game. And it's not at all the same setting as RE2 - RE2 barely spends any time in Raccoon City proper since you get to the police station quite quickly and after that you're never out in the city again. Sure RE3 isn't as massive as RE2 and doesn't add as much to the series, but it's still one of the best games in the series. RE2 didn't really add anything to the essential RE1 gameplay beyond the superior zapping system, anyway - what makes it great is the actual scenarios you go through - so I don't think it's fair to apply that uneven standard to RE3.

1 - Resident Evil 4
2 - ReMake
