Because Lists Are Fun: Let's Rank the Resident Evil Series

Add me to RE5 defense force. Solid ass game that didn't meet expectations, but on its own is fun as hell. The co-op is even better than most games'.

I love 5. It's not a very good RE title, but it's so damn fun I don't give a shit.

I really, really liked 5.

Until they gave the enemies guns and rocket launchers. It should go without saying that if I wanted to play Gears of War I would be playing it; not Resident Evil.

1. resident evil 4
>>>>>>>>>>>>
2. resident evil 1 remake on gamecube/wii
3. resident evil 2
4. resident evil 5

Resident Evil 5 plays fine, but it feels so generic and made from a template.

I'll play along.

1. RE: Remake
2. RE2
3. RE4
4. RE: Code Veronica
5. RE5
6. RE3

I never played Zero, but Remake is by far imo the best the series has to offer. There's just something about the mansion.

From what I played

1. Resident Evil Outbreak File#2
2. Resident Evil 2
4. Resident Evil Outbreak
5. Resident Evil Code Veronica
6. Resident Evil 3
7. Resident Evil Directors Cut
8. Resident Evil 5
9. Resident Evil REMAKE
10.Resident Evil 4
11. Resident Evil Zero
12. Resident Evil Gun Survivor 4 Heroes Never Die
13. Resident Evil Gun Survivor 2 Code Veronica

Wait, cvxfreak hasn't posted the definitive ranking list yet? ;)
I'm kind of worried that he's hurt. Somebody should call him to make sure he's alright.

This is a little tough because these games don't really age well from a control standpoint. Like Resident Evil 4 is much much much better than Resident Evil 5, but it is very difficult to go back to because RE4 doesn't use the more modern control schemes of RE5. A more extreme example would be playing REmake is tougher to pick up and go than say, Resident Evil: Dead Aim, even though it's much much better.

I used to really like RE3, but I went back last year and replayed it....and..while I still kinda like it, not nearly as much. I find that the difficulty's for instance, to be bullshit. Hard mode is too tough for me, easy mode is too easy. There's no middle ground.
yeah, good call. that's one of my big problems with it as well. I've never finished it on Hard, to be honest. I usually just play through on Easy and deliberately leave certain items sitting untouched in the item box.

And I agree with you on RE5 as well. It's a damn good game. It's hard to rank my time with RE5 against my time with 3, CV, REmake and even 2 when it isn't a clear black or white THIS GAME IS GOD LIKE/THIS GAME IS SHIT situation (like RE4), because of how different it is.

Mercs was WAY better than Hunk/Tofu. It contained many different paths instead of one linear journey, possible side stops for extra points with a heavy element of risk/reward, and it actually unlocked some pretty awesome stuff for the main game. And it's not at all the same setting as RE2 - RE2 barely spends any time in Raccoon City proper since you get to the police station quite quickly and after that you're never out in the city again. Sure RE3 isn't as massive as RE2 and doesn't add as much to the series, but it's still one of the best games in the series. RE2 didn't really add anything to the essential RE1 gameplay beyond the superior zapping system, anyway - what makes it great is the actual scenarios you go through - so I don't think it's fair to apply that uneven standard to RE3.

RE3 was one of the last RE games I played the way I used to play video games. I got every single bit of gameplay enjoyment out of it. I mean, I replayed RE4 several times, but I replayed RE3 over and over and over again. I had a lot of stuff to unlock, but I also wanted to see the different areas and game path/branches. It was a hell of a lot of fun.

I'm not sure if something about me has changed or if it's something about the way games are designed these days, but I very rarely get that kind of value out of a single game anymore. That sucks.

Never played 0, one day I'll get around to it.

RE2
RE: CV
RE1
RE4
RE3
RE5

Even with 5 being ranked last I still enjoyed it. Just not as much as the others :D

1. Resident Evil 2
2. Resident Evil REmake
3. Resident Evil 1
4. Resident Evil: Code Veronica
5. Resident Evil 4
6. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
7. Resident Evil 0

Not saying 4 is bad by any means, it was one of my favorite games of last gen, but I prefered the survival horror genre. The first 2 RE games are without question 2 of the best games of all time. 3 was a drop off, but CV brought it back. Still have yet to play 5, just from what I've played not a huge fan, but I'll get around to it.

4, Remake, 2, 3,5,0,CV.

I hate the puzzles in 0 and CV. I give the nod to 0 for being just a bit creepier and a bit more difficult in the combat area.

I know exactly what you mean. I still do a few playthroughs, but once I'm done with the game, it's pretty much shelved forever. With Resident Evil 2 I could just keep playing through over and over, even if there was nothing left to get. I miss being able to enjoy games like that.

Here's how you play the RE games:

Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil 3 (the part before RE2 in timeline, then save)
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3 (the last part)

Then start on the top of my list again (only this time you use the Dir. Cut of RE1, so you have do all the puzzles differently), if you really enjoyed it. Forget the rest of the series.

:D

RE4

....

*crickets chirp*

The rest of the series basically jumps off a cliff after that.

I have to agree with this. I never really enjoyed the series, the first one was neat for the scare novelty but after that...RE4 was great though.

It's always interesting to see that many people who love RE4 never liked the series, and then some people wonder why some of us don't see RE4 as a "proper" Resident Evil..

RE4 is without a doubt the best in my mind, but who actually considers RE4/5 real RE games? That's like trying to claim Halo Wars is the same as Halo 1-3...

1. RE4
2. RE2
3. REmake
4. RE: Outbreak File 2/ RE3
5. RE5
6. RE: Outbreak File 1
7. RECVX
8. RE0

I'm really tempted to load up RE4 again.

I like RE5, but it's just not brilliant like some of the series was. I swear, every time Capcom decide to do a batshit crazy super villain thing in an RE, it's more or less crap. Operation Javier was bearable because it was on rails.

Still hanging on for the RE5 DLC.

Gah, it pains me so, so much to see RE3 so low on lists and Code: Veronica generally higher. First, my list, and then I will explain why RE3 is one my favorites.

1. 4
2. 2
3. 3
4. Remake
5. 5
6. Code: Veronica
7: 0

The original might be somewhere after Code: Veronica.

On why RE3 is underappreciated: I think it might be the faster pacing, the lack of two really playable characters, or that it came after RE2, but I felt RE3 never got a fair shake. In some ways, it has a lot in common with RE4 in terms of design: there's no real "hub world" like the police station or the mansion, and instead players are constantly being pushed through the world. What you end up with are fewer large puzzles but a completely different style of adventure in terms of pace. You still have a few major puzzles (like getting the train car started), but overall you're really moving forward constantly. I think it reaches a fairly good balance-- the action set pieces get repetitive and it is no where near as good as Resident Evil 2 and its highpoints, but I would argue its standout moments are nearly as good.

Nemesis and pursuit are really fantastic additions to the game, and they make Resident Evil 3 genuinely scary in a way none of the other games are. His theme was fantastically eery, and whenever you heard breaking glass, "STARS," or a door open somewhere out of view, you knew to run. He was genuinely more difficult than everything else in the game, and that he pursued you over an entire adventure made him a monster with a personality, one even more defined than Tyrant in RE2. Now that I'm actually on the internet, I see people ice skating around Nemesis and taking him out with like three shots and I realize maybe some people are just too damn good at this series, but for the average player I would say Nemesis was an incredible threat AND a serious challenge.

On top of Nemesis sits the interesting critical decision points, which branched the game in meaningful ways and heightened the sense of tension in the environment. They also contributed to my sense that Jill was particularly resourceful and skillful in a pinch. This was really critical, I thought, because the rest of the game did a superb job at making me feel a sense of desperation and finality. I thought the subtitle "last escape" was really appropriate: Raccoon City felt destroyed and damaged, like it was about to breathe its last, unlike Resident Evil 2, where I think everything had this meticulous perfectness to it that made the setting feel more like a museum than a living city. Only the beginning of the game really shows you the severity of the crisis, whereas I think it's being reinforced continually in RE3. The CGI backgrounds got a lot better from 2 to 3 (though frankly the CGI itself got a lot worse...it just wasn't directed in the same way), and it went a long way to selling the overall package.

And then there's the improvements to the systems and the controls, which I feel are often overlooked. The dodge move, the 180 degree turn, and the ammo mixing system are three of these things that I felt really worked well in the game, and it felt a bit like a step back seeing them gone in Code: Veronica.

Overall, RE3 wasn't particularly innovative or original, but it did have a really great idea at the core and had refined, balanced gameplay that never got too frustrating.

On why Code: Veronica is particularly annoying: I'm never one to complain that the environments in a Resident Evil game never really logically connected, or that things were too over the top, but man, then there's Code: Veronica.

My main gripes with the game primarily centered around its general lack of elegance: it doesn't do the action movie breakneck adventure as well as RE3, and it doesn't do the more methodical adventure as well as RE2. The game is just so annoying in spots, where it'll force the player to do annoying things like check items into a security box, go to the menu and equip the lighter to avoid bats in like a 2x2 room, or avoid one too many enemies in an extremely enclosed space.

I felt like I was always bumping into inventory management problems in this game, as the scale of environments to explore expanded greatly without a corresponding increase in storage space. The game will let you venture over to Alexia's beautiful quarters (again, totally bizarre placement but okay) with a full inventory, and I am almost positive that there are no item boxes on the entire grounds! At least I missed them the last time I played. :D Why don't you make me put items into a security box HERE, hm?

The game lacks the sense of urgency that RE3 had, and replaces it with some of the craziest villains this side of Irving. I thought the boss fights were really great, though some were perhaps a little too difficult; I loved Nosferatu, but damn if I don't remember screaming at this boss. The entire cast of enemies was sullied by the inclusion of the Bandersnatch, which is definitely the worst enemy in RE history, with an uninteresting design and stupid attack patterns that might have been more fun if they left the damn dodge move in. Or maybe put it in, since it was probably never there.

Then there's what really gets my goat about Code: Veronica. Despite all my prior issues, I still think it's a pretty good game, though definitely one of the most frustrating in the series. There are a few points in this game where you can really be screwed, more than any other in the series and more generally due to difficulty with controls or enclosed quarters. I remember reading so many FAQs back in the day that included advice of "starting over" or not making the same mistake next time, such as leaving your fire extinguisher in the security box (oh my god this one makes my blood boil), facing the Tyrant on the plane (great fight, but a dead end for like 20% of players their first time through), Nosferatu, running from zombie Steve, and more. Seriously, fuck Zombie Steve. Nearly every FAQ even today says you need to have essentially otherworldly skill not to be hit by him if it is even possible, and all of them recommend just having a first aid spray ready. What the hell is this? The other games have their chokepoints, but nothing at all like this. You are basically going to take damage. Sorry.

Anyway, still enjoyed the game, own it multiple times just like every other game in the series. lol.

I didn't like RE3 because of one simple thing: Nemesis

I don't like huge enemies that I (basically) can't kill and who chase you around. Especially when running away is not that easy thanks to the (awesome) tank controls.

I wasted all my ammo on that dude (and as you all know ammo wasn't as easy to come by as in RE4) and was so pissed that I never touched it again.

However this thread made me consider going back to it and trying it again.

Well, you are never really asked to kill him (though there are some definite benefits to "stunning him"), and as long as you make the "right" critical decisions, you can avoid him basically until the end.

I have to say I have never really been bothered by tank controls, but I do understand those who cannot work with them.

The only time he's REALLY tough is on your very first encounter with him (on hard mode), when you only have the shotgun. After that you get either the magnum or the grenade launcher (can't remember which, and it may vary depending on what you're doing in your playthrough) and he's not so bad as long as you make sure to save ammo for the next potential encounter with him. That first fight is pretty ridiculously hard, though - at least he doesn't have his rocket launcher yet so it's mainly dodging just one move.

Totally agree with you little writeup, Kev.

1. Resident Evil Remake
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Resident Evil 4
4. Resident Evil Code Veronica
5. Resident Evil 5
6. Resident Evil 0
7. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Well Y2Kev, if it weren't for CV, I would be a totally different person today, so clearly you are wrong, smug and somewhat annoying,

I actually liked them (the "awesome" wasn't meant ironic) but in this one instance I hated'em.

I just replayed 2 and 3 this past weekend

1. RE2
2. RE:CV
3. REmake
4. RE:3 Nemesis
5. RE4
6. RE5
7. REDC
8. RE0

Well you are apparent so I can deal

Unless CV forced you to have some kind of religious transformative experience--and frankly, having a transformative experience because of a game filled with cross dressers and bug fetishists is curious-- I'm sure you'd find something else to love. Like RE0 or something.

Remake and 5 are the only two which I ever really enjoyed and completed.

Remake because of it's mood and actually managing to give me a few frights, really polished up game that was the perfect length

5 because it's a solid co-op game with a good friend, and a pretty good evolution to the RE4 formula, which I also liked, but burnt out on in the second half of the game pretty hard.

I dunno what my idea of a truly great RE game would be though, I've never been big on the series nor many of the early PSone 3D titles like it. Probably just something with the mood of Remake but the co-op and gameplay of 5 (and more pacing of Remake also, RE5 was too segmented, blah).

1. RE2
2. RE1 DC (loved the sadistically hard "arrange mode")
3. RE4
4. REMAKE
5. RE0

No fan of CV/CVX myself, Capcom's penchant for terribly designed boss-fights was in full effect for this one, and despite liking a lot of stuff in it, I've always found it a chore to play through.

RE5 is a decent game, but the Survival horror aspect is pretty much gone and its a full-blooded shooter.

1) Resi 4
2) Resi 2
3) Code Veronica
4) Resi Remake
5) Resi 3
6) Resi 0

Resident Evil 5 is not on the list, because I try to forget it. Yeah, it's that bad.

Most people hate 5 because it was a disappointment when compared to 4. The game was hyped so very much, and ended up being serviceable and polished, but not particularly groundbreaking or awe inspiring. I think that Capcom tried Westernizing the game too much... not making it enough of a parody of the West like 4 was, but rather a cookie cutter Westernized experience.

I still thoroughly enjoyed the game, despite its numerous flaws, because it did many things well. And the game was a lot of fun, even if you don't really consider it a Resident Evil game. I may be biased though, since my name's in the instruction manual. :lol
