Bed Sheet Etiquette

I was having a discussion with my wife about the use of the flat sheet. I say it is used as a barrier between you and the comforter, you sleep under the flat bed sheet. She says that the flat sheet is to remain tucked in and that one is not supposed to sleep under, but over, the flat bed sheet. I understand that some people don't use a flat sheet, which if fine, but when someone does use a flat sheet is it proper to sleep on top or underneath the flat sheet?

I have a fitted sheet on my matress and I sleep under the flat sheet. Depending on the weather I use only the flat sheet, a flat sheet with a blanket on it or a flat sheet with the comforter in it.

I'm baffled as to how some people are confused by this. We had a thread a little while ago about the same thing. There are two sheets, you sleep between them. Hence the phrase "between the sheet".

You don't necessarily need a flat sheet I suppose but generally the material a sheet is made of is more comfortable against the skin than a blanket will be. Plus I like to sleep cool so I sometimes kick the blanket off and just have the sheet on top of me.

I sleep over the flat sheet. I figure the fitted sheet stays on while the flat sheet is easy to remove so you can easily wash it once every few weeks or so.
Also why would you sleep under the flat sheet when you probably spent a good deal of money for an ultra comfortable comforter or duvet cover?

Comforter = fitted sheet, right?

Sometimes I sleep on the flat sheet, sometimes I don't. But when I wake up, I'm usually underneath it.

why do sheets set come as fitted+ flat? if the custom was for only a sheet +comforter then that is how they would be sold. At least in the US. Two sheets between you and the mattress/mattress pad is just weird. that doesn't prevent you from needing to wash the fitted sheet.

The question is making me irrationally angry. Why the hell would you even bother with the flat sheet if you're going to sleep on top of it? Sheets should be the most comfortable part of one's bed ensemble. Sleep between them.

mattress / sheet / sheet / blanket

You sleep between the sheets.

Hmm, really? I've never heard of this before. Here in Sweden it's definitely mattress-sheet-blanket-(beadspread). You sleep on the sheet, under the blanket. Never ever heard of anyone doing it differently. Or maybe I'm just not familiar with exactly how these terms are used.

I would think the thing you sleep on should also be comfortable. And you have a sheet thats over you, its called the comforter/duvet cover.

Why would you buy an expensive ultra comfortable comforter if the flat sheet is even more comfortable and a lot cheaper?

The bedspread is the comforter. The debate here is between having a single, fitted sheet between you and the mattress (or mattress pad if you have one) and having a fitted sheet with a flat sheet fully tucked in around the edges of the bed between you and the mattress.

Fitted sheet: the thing that goes around the mattress with the little corners.

Flat sheet: the simple sheet that you keep on your bed

Comforter: the real big thing for winters.

Blanket/cover: the thing when it is not ultra cold but also not hot.

Just set up your own blankets on either side of the bed as you see fit. My wife doesn't sleep on my flat sheet because I don't tuck it in over there, and I don't mess with her bizarre pile of blankets and quilts. It looks weird when we make the bed but whatever, everybody's happy.

Edit: of course we both sleep on the same fitted sheet

Hmm, ok, I'm probably just confused with your American terms then. But I think I sort of got it now. In Sweden the standard is:

Mattress
Flat sheet
Duvet cover with a duvet inside (I think? It's a "bag" with an opening where you put a thicker cover.)
(Beadspread - optional)

Fitted sheets exist too, I guess, but they're not as common.

I get super cold at night (even in summer) so for me it's fitted sheet/flat sheet/blanket/blanket/comforter

I sleep between the fitted sheet and the flat sheet.

Fellow swede here, I agree with Roadhazard.

Matress
Flat sheet (called underlakan / under sheet in swedish)
Duvet inside a Duvet Cover

If you're cold an extra blanket on top, and if you're warm just the duvet cover without an duvet inside.

The flat sheet is of course tucked around the matress so that it doesn't move during the night

Right answer is:
Patja(mattress) -> petari(thin mattress so your mattress does not get dirty. Sheet goes over this) -> lakana (sheet) -> nukkuja (you) -> pussilakanassa oleva peitto (blanket/duvet in a duvet cover) -> päiväpeitto (cover / counterpane or some shit) repästään helvettiin ku aletaan nukkua (you kick this mf to other side of moon when you go to bed)

Patja(mattress)
Petauspatja (thin mattress or some shit)
Lakana(Sheet)
Peitto(blanket/duvet)
Pussilakana (blanket/duvet cover)
Päiväpeitto(counterpane / cover)

Now here hear the truth.

Wow, the amount of people who don't have the concept of bedding down is astonishing!

Top sheet

Duvet/Comforter (winter)

The top sheet is there to keep the comforter from getting sweaty / dirty. Most people don't have a washer / dryer large enough for a full-sized comforter so unless you want to lug your bedding to a laundromat and dump a shitload of money into their large washers, the top sheet is your friend.

Alternatively, duvet covers are pretty friendly too.

Sleep between sheets because sheets are easier to clean. Sorry OP but your wife is a filthy savage. Gotta divorce her.

Never ever heard of anyone sleeping under sheet. I have never heard of anyone useing Fitted sheets either. Fitted sheet sounds like devils work.

Edit: have seen fitted sheets on those small guest mattresses.

I think this came up recently (along with someone who ate cupcake wrappers and shrimp tails) and it's just as insane to sleep above two sets of sheets as it was then.

Your wife is completely defeating the point of having two sheets, which is to save having to wash the duvet or comforter as often. Same reason you wear underwear.

Duvet cover also works instead of a sheet but I still use a sheet anyway because it's easier to wash.

I just have a fitted sheet over the mattress and my blanket.

I can't sleep if my feet are confined, they have to stick out of the blanket. So a flat sheet is a no no.

I don't use a flat sheet, but when it is there, I sleep over it. I prefer feeling a blanket to feeling sheets.
