Bed Sheet Etiquette

Fellow swede here, I agree with Roadhazard.

Matress
Flat sheet (called underlakan / under sheet in swedish)
Duvet inside a Duvet Cover

If you're cold an extra blanket on top, and if you're warm just the duvet cover without an duvet inside.

The flat sheet is of course tucked around the matress so that it doesn't move during the night

Right answer is:
Patja(mattress) -> petari(thin mattress so your mattress does not get dirty. Sheet goes over this) -> lakana (sheet) -> nukkuja (you) -> pussilakanassa oleva peitto (blanket/duvet in a duvet cover) -> päiväpeitto (cover / counterpane or some shit) repästään helvettiin ku aletaan nukkua (you kick this mf to other side of moon when you go to bed)

Patja(mattress)

Petauspatja (thin mattress or some shit)

Lakana(Sheet)

Peitto(blanket/duvet)

Pussilakana (blanket/duvet cover)

Päiväpeitto(counterpane / cover)

Now here hear the truth.

Edit: quoted pics.

Yep, these people get it.

Does it have elastic bands in it that hold it to the mattress or is it just like, a loose sheet draped over everything?

Big sheet that you just wrap around mattress. My earlier post has pic of the sheet I meant.
Really easy just grab and take for cleaning. Idea of a sheet between me and my blanket feels so wrong.

Wow, the amount of people who don't have the concept of bedding down is astonishing!

Mattress
Mattress cover
Fitted sheet
*INSERT PEOPLE*
Top sheet
Blanket
Duvet/Comforter (winter)

This is almost 100% correct. The only thing I would change is that I would consider the blanket optional for winter, not the duvet. My duvet stays on the bed all year.

Ah, so it's just a larger sheet then. A fitted sheet is the same thing but it just has elastic bands that keep it tucked under the mattress. Hardly devilry.

No need for a sheet between you and your blanket, it's the comforter that you're trying to protect. Blankets can fit in a regular washer, a comforter cannot. If you don't use one, for whatever reason, then enjoy your blanket sans sheet.

This is what I do. Not sure why people are freaking out about it. You never take off the mattress cover. Just take off your fitted sheet and top sheet when you have to wash your sheets. It takes like a minute.

The only downside is that it makes getting out of bed harder. It's so difficult to leave all that comfort behind.

Those are even worse than the ones you put mattress all in. Those I have met few times in my life unfortunately. Duvet/comforter/blanket all the same to me. I have duvet in duvet cover.

Edit: Edit2: (fitted sheets) They never actually fit my mattress too well or keep their place during night.

See, I think just a loose sheet tucked underneath would be just as, if not more likely to not stay on.

At least I think we can all agree, people who sleep on just a bare mattress are heathens, right? Can GAF at least come together on that one?

You're married and this topic just came up?

Not the first time. We don't have the flat sheet on our bed, but I grew up using the flat sheet. Our sleeping arrangements are much more normal these days then when we first moved in together. She grew up differently in a different country with different sleeping customs.

Today the conversation came up when I was setting up the guest bedroom for my parents. She was like don't put the flat sheet on the bed. I was like, but if it gets too hot and they don't want to cover with the comforter then they can use the sheet. She was like, that is not a cover, so we disagreed and decided to Gaf it.

I don't understand the point of a flat sheet when the comforter is inside another sheet... container thing. It's just extra stuff to wash.

Also why would you sleep under the flat sheet when you probably spent a good deal of money for an ultra comfortable comforter or duvet cover?

Because usually it isn't cold enough to be entirely under a comforter.

You put the comforter over your upper body so your arms and chest can feel the comfort, but you put the flat sheet over your lower body to stay cool. You can leave your feet hanging out if it is still too warm.

Yeah, I mean... I don't see how this is even a question. When you have a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, the point is to put the fitted sheet on the mattress and the flat sheet between you and the blanket/comforter/whatever.

If some places use a flat sheet in place of the fitted sheet, that's fine, whatever. But why on earth would you use two sheets and then sleep on top of both of them?

This is what I grew up with.

Blanket and Comforter usually got removed in hot seasons though.

Wow ever heard the expression between the sheets?

That's cos you sleep on one and put the other between you and the comforter. Shit.

You sleep between the sheets so your dirty body oil and grease doesn't fuck up the expensive shit you sleep between. Not only that it makes logical sense that if the big blanket/comforter is too hot you can fold it down and still sleep under a thin sheet for comfort.

I stayed over at a friend's house and there were so many sheets that I didn't know where to sleep. Mattress-FittedSheet-Duvet-DuvetCover for me. As for your question, I would sleep under the flat sheet, which I do at hotels, where they often don't wash the comforters.

I sleep on top of however many sheets are involved in the bed I'm in. Mostly because I like sticking my feet out of the blankets, and I don't wanna kick like a madman (more so than I already do) to deal with getting it out of a sheet as well.

lulz, I thought this vikki person was a chick. Well, damn, you learn something every day.

I know it's trikki, but I have dikki.

You should have asked for more sheets.

Top of the flatsheet or none at all. Can't imagine how frustrating it must be to turn yourself into a blanket burrito while sleeping under a flatsheet.

I don't sleep under the flat sheet. Normally because I'm never that cold when going to bed.

fitted sheet
comforter

if it's hot, slide the comforter down.

anything else and I may as well put an apple in my mouth and season myself. can't stand overly layered hotel beds.

What the hell is a fitted sheet or a flat sheet?

Edit; Oh I get it now...

You sleep under that fitted sheet and above the flat sheet. The fitted sheet is scrunched so to best contour around your body.

Why even put the flat sheet on if you are not sleeping under it you heathens?
Because where else would I store it? I don't have a linen cabinet. Might as well throw it on the bed and use it when I need it.

fitted sheet is that bastard that keeps bouncing back to the middle of the bed when you pull on the opposite side to put it on

Use your legs and feet to guide the sheet. Thats how I do it.

Fitted sheets have elastic so they can stay on the mattress. Flat sheet does not.

Ahhh, I never knew they had a name but the use is pretty self explanatory. I dont even use comforters on hot nights. Just the flat sheets.

I get super cold at night (even in summer) so for me it's fitted sheet/flat sheet/blanket/blanket/comforter

I sleep between the fitted sheet and the flat sheet.

I thought I was the only one that did this.

Well except the comforter. but I sleep with a sweater sometimes so maybe it evens out

I personally don't use one, but when I did it was common sense to go under. Hell is the purpose of having a sheet and sleeping on top of another?

..no, the fitted sheet is wrapped around five (and edges of the sixth) sides of the mattress using the (usually) elastic bands sewn to the edges.

Seen here:

The flat sheet goes on top of the fitted sheet. The occupant is supposed to lie on top of the fitted sheet, but underneath the flat sheet; so that it can protect the duvet/comforter from the oils excreted from the person's skin.

See how there is no elastic band:
