What an amusing thread. These games seem pretty decent considering how small a team Gust apparently is.
Probably it has been mentioned already but one thing that caught my attention was how they "de-aged" the protagonist of the first Arland game for the third one.
Guess she was getting too old or something.

Yup, they loli-fied Rorona in Meruru from what I read on a SanCom article awhile back. She was getting up there in age chronologically and they wanted to keep her cute or something.

For whatever it's worth I think even the Japanese fanbase was pissed off over that. Geez, what a way to screw up one of the most appealing aspects of going forward in time. Plus if a 40 year old can look like a respectable older teenager then I can't see why it'd actually matter.

Here go the article in question. It's from Sankaku Complex. Not actually linking the site as that's probably banworthy considering their numerous ads full of porn and hentai.

Gust, the developers of the Atelier moe-RPG series, have stated that their mysterious decision to turn the protagonist of the original Kishida Mel designed game into a loli in the upcoming Atelier Meruru was because they could not bear the prospect of having her appear in her thirties…

Their comments in a recent interview:

Who came up with the idea of Rorona ending up like that? Was there opposition?
All the development team were united in thinking “we don’t want to see Rorona in her thirties.” So, we were all in agreement there.
Having a thirty-something Rorona going “hawawa!” was something I think everyone can do without.

In fairness, a 30-year-old woman finding herself transformed into a loli is probably a win-win situation for all parties concerned.


Expect the game to be banned throughout the west.

In other remarks Gust revealed that if they cannot keep making loli Atelier games they will in fact die:

I haven't actually read it yet, but on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is truth and 10 is me trolling, Artefact's default setting is somewhere around 3908.

Edit: As pretty much expected, comment is literally accurate but it's barely-related to the whole article and everything in the commentary is pure bait. :v

Yeah, pretty much. :| I mean, she's cute as a kid, there's a legit in-story reason for the change that shouldn't surprise anyone (Astrid.....), and you can turn her back to normal/sorta normal by the end of the game, but still I would have much preferred to have her be/look her normal age. Like you said, if Esty can still look that good......

It's kind of hilarious in a sad way when the creative team's first thought regarding "Having a thirty-something Rorona going 'hawawa!'" is "well, let's make her a loli!" instead of "well, maybe she can just stop going 'hawawa!'"
