Best PC Game MODS

Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 was flat out amazing. It did things that even Battlefield 3 doesn't do. Things like 20 people in a single AC-130. Definitely the most fun I have ever had with a mod in any game ever.

Also do Dota and Counter-Strike count? Because those technically started as mods.

Desert Combat was amazing. BF2 made the helicopters too noob friendly. DC took skill.

If we're going to bring up Maldo HD, then it might be worth mentioning Sikkmod + Wulfen's textures for Doom 3.

STALKER Complete 2009/2012 + AMK + Weather is a really, really fantastic mod. I have a rar of the install, but I'm not sure if there's any way to host it. It's 1.01 GB.

The Knights of the Old Republic 2 mod which restored and polished a lot of content originally cut from the game. An amazing amount of work went into it.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Gothic 3 both have fan patches that changes things as well, making them significantly better.

The Specialists was a fun Half-Life mod I would play occasionally.

Basically a Matrix mod with tons of melee weapons and guns.

There was a fantastic Star Wars total conversion mod for Escape Velocity back in the day.

I should dig out my old Powermac and see if it's still on the hard drive.

the most batshit insane MOD I ever played was definitely the Europa Barbarorum total conversion of Rome Total War.

after playing that, I began to understand why the original game was not made to be especially realistic.

Day z and Wasteland for amra 2 are both my most played games atm. They are both unfortunately ruined by the amount of hackers thanks to the shittyness that is punkbuster, but when you get a full server full of non-cheats, both games are soooooo much fun.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Team Fortress then later Team Fortress Classic & Counter-Strike. Obviously.

Lots more great HL mods like Natural Selection never had as much impact as those.

DOTA is probably the biggest ever though.

I loved Metaball for UT2004, it was like Marble Madness with some Nights into Dreams-like atmosphere.

Also UT2004RPG, made by one of the developers and containing pure bliss in something like 200kb file size.

Clone bandits was fun too, if a bit too similar to CTF.

And of course Red Orchestra.

As for Doom mods, this one, obviously.

No graphics enhancement mod can beat actual gameplay and content.

It looks like this mod was created with the specific goal of shitting on every single thing that makes Doom a classic.

I beat Brutal Doom on Hurt Me Plenty a few weeks ago. It does not. All the new functions of Brutal Doom -- the improved weapons, the circle-strafing and the mouselook to name a few -- are balanced, hell I'd say necessary, thanks to stronger enemies. (I'm adding spoiler tags in case there's anyone who wants to discover these enemies on their own):

Chaingun enemies deal tons more damage per second, and if there's more than one around, they will absolutely rip you to shreds if you give them half a chance. Some boss enemies now have rapid-fire capabilities added to their default weapons; most notably, the Mancubus and the Cyberdemon. Needless to say, a battle with a Cyberdemon firing missiles as fast as you can fire a chaingun gets interesting real fast. o_o

If anything, Brutal Doom makes Doom 2 even harder and more frantic. I definitely recommend downloading it and giving it a try if you've already mastered vanilla Doom 2.

Other PC Mods I've enjoyed:

The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex (as someone already mentioned)
Cinema Mod and Kung Fu for Max Payne 2
Increased Wasteland Spawn for Fallout: New Vegas (with this mod, I'd run into faction battles every few minutes. It's pretty awesome being able to intervene and help out whichever faction I'm affiliated with)
Clan Quest Mod for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Macro.

Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2 is probably my most played game ever.

Just an all round amazing experience unmatched in any game when you have a good team (Which was more often than not, everybody played it the way it was meant to be played).

Absolutely incredible, cannot recommend it enough.

I so need to get back into Supreme Commander....

I forgot this game existed. Always wanted to try it when it came out but didn't have a good PC back then. I hear the first one is better than the second?

Also, anyone have any thoughts about Homeworld 1 vs 2? Played the first one ages ago and it'd be cool to get back into it if there was some interesting mods. I bought the first one through my elementary schools scholastic order thing when it first came out. Didn't know anything about the game and it blew my mind :p

The scud missile launcher was the best part of that mod.

You mean Total Annihilation when you say the first one? Supreme commander 2 was never made... no ... no... it was NEVER made... what complete trash that game was :(. Chris Taylor should be ashamed!

Supreme commander and forged alliance are the only things you need to play!

Homeworld 2 is best, imo.

Complex is the Homeworld 2 mod I hear praised the most.

Counter-Strike is the greatest mod of all time. It's better than Half-Life, I don't give a shit. Counter-Strike is the Half-Life multiplayer.

It's certainly the most addicting mod I've ever played.

My personal favorite single player mod of all time is MINERVA: Metastasis.

The 'Stanley Parable' is also really worth a try. It does things with narration and branching paths you have never seen before. Its hilarious to boot.

Also this.

Half-Life really had the most ridiculous collection of mods. On the single-player side, you had new campaigns like USS Darkstar and They Hunger. Then there was Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, the Specialists (think Hong Kong action flicks), and Day of Defeat.

Had a blast with 'No More Room in Hell' (Source)
Tough survival horror co-op.

Also 'The ship' for Half Life 1 was great fun. There is a source version for money, but original is just fine. Multiplayer murder mystery.
Kinda like what Assassin's Creed multiplayer turned out to be.

Half-Life

- They Hunger
- Counter Strike 1.6 (it counts bro)
- Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut

Half-Life 2

- MINERVA: Metastasis
- Research and Development
- Precursor
- Mission Improbable

Keep in mind I've played MANY Half-Life mods. But these sven ;) are the best of the best for me.

EDIT: And wow how could I forget Black Mesa Source. Yeah...play Black Mesa Source.

Stainless Steel and The Lord of the Rings mods for Medieval Total War II are absolutely brilliant. Waiting for Stainless Steel 7.0 to finally appear. It's been coming for ages!

Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is another I have got heaps of mileage out of, even if only for the levelling tweaks.

Gotta agree with this. Wasteland is debatably more fun than DayZ now. To me at least.

Half-Life

- They Hunger

Yep, I remember this one. Came with PC Gamer back in the day on the disc, I'm sure I still have it around somewhere. Fantastic mod.

I also remember that there was a Half-Life mod made specifically for PC Gamer, it took place on a ship, also horror themed if I remember correctly. Kind of similar to System Shock 2.

Bid for Power!

That was the Dragonball Z one for Quake III, right? I remember the team got a C&D, but the mod got leaked out anyway. Played the shit out that, it was really good. Unless I'm thinking of a different mod.
