Don't be, it's neat. That game probably will have the best character animation of any platinum title.
Better FFXV gifs. Look at all these transitions. ;-;

By no means amazingly animated, but iconic and great.
Bonus if you're big Mario and have the cape because that run alongside the running SFX is your gateway to the skies.

I can't find a gif of it, but I also like the Sorceress's run animation in Dragon's Crown.
There aren't any running SFX in Super Mario World.
I was going to say this as well. Running as Big Boss feels and looks weighty and it's super impressive.

Madden could learn a thing or two.

Giving the nod to 1984 Snake, because of the ponytail.
Looks like flash animation (AKA bad)
It's very stiff, especially at the speed of the actual game.Snake looks flat footed.
There's also the lack of variations based on slopes it's a bit disheartening to see people constantly naming it as "the best." Because the lack of those things is why he controls so well, because there is very little animation priority.. People are confusing "controls well" with "best animation." Example:See this video.

Doesn't compare to some of the other examples of best animation like FFXV.
Are you sure? I had no idea there was a woman character in unless she's an npc.![]()
Contra 4
But that's not a perfect balance when there's a total lack of things that other games succeed at very well with responsive controls as well. Just to use FFXV as an example again the player has complete control over Noctis during this entire section. That's the entire reason I would personally call it the best. It perfectly balances realistic-looking animation and responsive controls. It's the best running animation in a videogame for that reason.

Except that it doesn't. Precision and movement matters which is why they didn't go out of their way to add anything that would've added any kind of animation priority. It's the same reason why Dishonored has very little canned animations compared to some other FP games that have a shit ton of variations on back stabs.well, we are talking about best running animations and MGS 5 has the most realistic running/climbing animations.
Its a stealth/action game where precision and movement matters unlike FF15, so they did the right thing by prioritizing responsiveness over animation unlike other "stealth/action" games.
The title of the thread is best running animation. ._.I think you are confusing your opinions with other people's opinions.

No I don't. I just tend to articulate my opinion more often than not. This thread being no exception, especially since it's about animation specifically. He does it all the time, he thinks his opinion is more worth than anyone elses.
Walk/run cycles aren't trivial. They're one of the most important things when it comes to character animation.Yeah. It's really weird to feel "disheartened" by someone else's opinion. Especially so, over personal preference (which is what the term "best" boils down to, more times than not) as it pertains to something so trivial (running animations in video games).
He does it all the time, he thinks his opinion is more worth than anyone elses.
You wouldn't even be making this post if the subject game was any other, man.
MGS's animation is fine. He gave valid reasoning as to why it's not the best. Deal with it.
Thank you. The response is as if i'm saying it's straight up bad. Which it most definitely is not.You wouldn't even be making this post if the subject game was any other, man.

The reasons I gave.Oh yeah "valid reasoning"... comparing linear 30 fps next-gen titles to a 60fps cross-gen open world game lol
He can have his opinion as much as anyone else but he shouldn't come in here and tell people they are confused about their opinion.
How are these not valid? There's also the lack of variations based on slopes it's a bit disheartening to see people constantly naming it as "the best." something both the devs of which focused on.We also have the tech to support incredible animation quality and very good responsiveness. Just to name two linear games that succeed.

yes it does, especially climbing. Uncharted and Order games have responsiveness but are unrealistic and MGS 5 does both really really well and which is why people consider it the best. Importantly uncharted and order can get away with few animation priorities because they don't require the same precision and character movement as MGS 5.
I always thought Raiden's running animation looked like he had a dump in his pants. Maybe he did.
I looked for a gif, but everything was of Raiden naked. I had no idea that was popular.
Um... what?
The climbing, since it's very limited, is the reason why it's so meticulously animated compared to the run cycle. And even then, i'd argue that other games also succeed at climbing much better with a ton of incredibly well made variations. Uncharted most definitely is stylized but it certainly isn't very unrealistic. Especially when it comes to the tiny details like how often Drake shifts his weight. The Order 1886 probably has the best walk cycle so far this gen because it's a blend of tiny variations so that it doesn't get repetitive which is pretty insane. The lack of required precision is why the devs created better animations in the first place, their mindset was very different.yes it does, especially climbing. It's incredibly well done in the latest one. The way Drake's weight shifts around is fantastic.you think running and climbing in uncharted looks realistic?, OK

You can also keep the same amount of control while adding subtle things like weight shifting.
