Any idea how you go about doing this? I'm gonna sign up now for Starcraft.

Create your account. Verify your email address. Click on the games picture in the account management section. Type in your cd-key and submit.

Ahh... still waiting for the verification email, how long does it usually take?

Hard to say. It didn't send it to me when I got my account sent up using Firefox 3. I clicked the resend e-mail link but nothing happened. Then after about 20 minutes of dicking around I clicked the resend link in IE7 and I got it instantly.

Why would they want to use Steam when all of their games are available on Mac?
It wouldn't make much sense to have their own infrastructure just for Mac releases and then use Steam for the Windows versions.

That said, I'd be happy enough if Steam came to Mac too, but Valve seems pretty apathetic towards that idea.

As long as Valve doesn't come up with a suitable solution for the german market (still no Epic games, no GTA, etc.) I won't be spending a cent on Steam anymore. As of right now I approve every alternative to Steam. Go Blizzard!

Starcraft/BW and Warcraft III/TFT have official no-CD patches, actually... for WCIII you just need to download the latest patch (ingame, with the disc in) and play, while for SC/BW you need to download the latest patch ingame and then follow the instructions and copy a file off of the BW CD onto your hard drive (into the SC folder).

Yes, but why isn't there an official no-CD patch for Diablo 2 yet?

I also don't understand why everyone wants everything on Steam, either. Other digital download services work just as well if not better.

Doesn't matter if other systems work "as well". If you have 90% of your games on steam, and the other 10% on a bunch of other services, it's a pain in the arse. Having one program is just more convenient.

What's a system that works better then Steam anyway?

Does this service actually require you to run them through some sort of Blizzard launcher? I'd assumed it would be just like installing them separately, which would be less a pain than needing some meta-program.

Oh, so I need to try again in IE? Where do I find this re-send email link?

EDIT: nevermind, found it.

I'm not sure about that, but I just imagine everybody has steam running all the time at this point.

Also re-installing, and re-downloading games and such

anybody have the starcraft boardgame?

Is it fun and does it have good replay value?

I want it so bad but I dont wanna dump $80 for a board game even though I love SC

Well it's been more than a half-hour already and I still haven't gotten a single verification email off them. Is the email verification actually working at all or has it gotten snowed under from all the requests or something?

Put them on Steam, Blizzard :/
God no.

I'll buy the Anthology today (lost my CDs). I'm really tempted to replay StarCraft more than any released game in the market. Hell, I haven't even got GTA4.

Steam isn't special, it's just popular.

Even a better reason to put it there. I have many games there and its nice to have integrations. Thats why its special. Still...

Edit just read the registration thing now that is kick ass. One thing Steam needs to correct is CD key registration and digital copy. They have problems with that. They also need to get it so other games can use their service while also getting more games to have servers accessed through Steam.

I added all my Blizzard cdkeys

Starcraft Anthology
Warcraft 3
Warcraft 3 Expansion
Diablo 2
Diablo 2 Expansion

Its nice to know I don't have to worry about losing the cds ever again :D

After reading all this I realized. Where is our open source alternative to Steam. How about an interface like say trillian for messengers but for games. Something that logs into my stardock account, steam account, xfire, blizzard ect ect. Access all the same functions ad have one list of friends and games. Then on top of that have battle.net and server lists for applicable games.

Wait how does this work?!? If you have your cd key can you download a version from blizzard without buying? I tried to reinstall starcraft a while back and my cd was to old and had errors on it. Been half thinking of picking up a new cd since it's not that expensive to buy now but downloading it since I have the key would be even better.

yup just enter your cdkeys on the site and it allows you to download the games.

if they aren't, they wouldn't be around.

Ppl, competition is good. Why do ppl seem so ready to give a company a monopoly these days. Sheese lol

I for one am glad that something like the Gametap exists in addition to Steam.

Well, I tried clicking on the "re-send email" link in 3 different browsers, in all of them it claims it's sent an email but I've not received any of them. I see other people are having it work for them, what's the trick to it? It can't be that I'm not in the USA, they have country fields for people in other countries.

Blizzard is awesome, I just registered my Starcraft Special Edition and it got automatically upgraded to the Anthology Version which is now available for download for PC/MAC.

:D

I had to click the resend button once, because I hadn't received any confirmation mail. But then I got the email instantly, registered from Austria btw. Did you check your Spam folder?

Eff steam.

Blizzard can do things 5 million times better than Valve.
Hahahaha.

I love Blizzard and I love Valve. They both have their ups and downs.

Don't be fuckin' stupid.

Simply, Blizzard doesn't want to give Valve a percentage of their profits. They are a large enough company that they can have their own download service without losing potential customers.

I'd love these on Steam, but this is still pretty good. The whole unimited downloads thing is required for digital distribution.

Why would Blizzard even want to put Warcraft III or Diablo II on Steam? Blizzard pays the cost of running multiplayer servers for the hundreds of thousands/millions of people who still play those games daily. Steam would just be getting free money, and they wouldn't let previous blizzard customers transfer their keys over to their service like Blizzard is alllowing.

There are many people, myself included, who don't care if something would benefit a developer or publisher as long as it helps the consumer. It would be nice to have all of my games available through a single program so I'd like it in Steam.

(I'll still enter my CD keys for this service tho)

edit: Does anyone know if the downloadable versions just run from a single executable file or do you need to be running some kind of Steam-like service at the same time? Because if it's only a single file, we can just add them as non-Steam games and we might even be able to use the additional Steam features.

Holy awesome

I'd still rather be able to register them on Steam, but I'll accept this

Pretty much a ripoff. I mean some of my local stores carry for the warcraft iii battlechest for 14.99-19.99, same for StarCraft and Diablo 2 Battlechests.

They're sold about 39,99 where I live...Popular games don't lower in price.

The thing a lot of people don't think about when it comes to decisions like "Why Steam?" is a question like: "Why doesn't Company A just open their own retail store?" and the answer is obviously: "The cost." Now, of course, a digital distribution method is cheaper to maintain, but with all of the servers that will now be required to host the software, not to mention all of the extra employees and infrastructure, it probably costs enough that most companies (even relatively large ones) will look at something like Steam and say: "Hey, we can still make money and let Valve handle the rest." I bet the view it just like a retail store.

Blizzard, however, is fucking rich and has no need to do this. They can "suffer" through the initial cost of getting everything going and I'm sure the upkeep is like pennies to them. EA is in a similar position, I imagine.

Steam would just be getting free money, and they wouldn't let previous blizzard customers transfer their keys over to their service like Blizzard is alllowing.
Steam happily allows you to register your CD keys if the publisher allows it. Very few do, though.

Not to mention that Blizzard has been doing this for WoW for awhile now. I never even owned a physical copy of WoW when I played for a few months last year. I downloaded the full game as trial, bought a cd-key from Blizzard, and then bought and downloaded the Burning Crusade expansion from Blizzard. They already have the infrastructure to handle downloads like this from their WoW stuff. It's just a matter of expanding on that.

Sigh... No confirmation email here either.

Well, it's been like 8 hours here and still no email. Looks like Blizzard really dropped the ball on this one.

EDIT: And to top it off, when I click on the link to go to their support site to email them about it, I get a 500 internal server error!

No confirmation mail for me, neither via Firefox, nor via IE.

Well, they don't even have PayPal as a payment option yet, so I couldn't actually buy anything, but I'd still like to register my old games.
