Blizzard's Online Store, now with Digtal Downloads!

Ah, finally received a verification mail from Blizzard, after many, many tries!

Is there any trick to it? What browser did you use? Did you click the "verify my email address" next to the padlock near your email address, or did you "Click here" in the bottom right?

Their activation reminds me of MGS beta signups. Get the shit working Blizzard.

The one that worked in the end was the "verify my email address" link (using IE7 on Vista). However, I think it's pretty random. When it worked, I received my e-mail immediately, so it doesn't seem to be a matter of e-mail being stuck in Internet traffic, but rather an internal problem at Blizzard.

aka lottery

yes you can download OSX versions of each game. I just did it with warcraft iii + frozen throne.

oh wait, no i didn't, because the fucking verification takes forever

GodDAMN. Just as I read that some people had success receiving their verification emails when they were on Internet Explorer, I bump into this:

dammitblizzardff8.jpg

Thanks Blizzard, I can wait a little longer to activate my games on your service. :P

its back up, still no fix.

the store works really really poorly in safari. cant get IE7 on mac so dunno how that is.

If there is any non steam service I will use to download games it is through Blizzard.

Double bonus for the fact I can put in my existing keys and download the games right away.

Blizzard. :bow :bow

I will still get Starcraft 2 in the store because I want the collectors edition (See DM, I told you i buy CEs but it has to be for a game and company i love!), and I'll put the CD key into the download service ASAP so I can redownload the game whenever I want.

I never received my verification e-mail, so I changed my e-mail address and received it instantly...

Not if it's anything like their WoW distribution tech.

Now I must say, damn you are clever Blizzard.

You download the games via the WoW style downloader, which is defaulted to peer to peer transfer. Why would they want to be on Steam (aside from the 10+ million eyeballs), when they can run their own infrastructure, let their own users cover the bulk of the bandwidth, and not pay any money to Valve?

>.<

The support site link is working now, although it seems to point to the WoW support site. I filled the form in anyway and sent it off.

Your acting like your the only ones getting the games activated! Their probably getting hammered at this point with all the requests, just try it later.

I have been "trying it later". I've been trying it on and off for nearly 24 hours now, and still haven't received a single email from them.

Sorry, later in the sense of in a day or two :D (will you die if you wait a little longer?) . You need to realize the service just got released, it's only natural everyone is going to be trying it, so it's getting jammed or maybe some technical problem arised.

Is the service worldwide? If so I can see the whole of South Korea logging on to sign in and put their Starcraft keys on... I expect it to abate after a while.

Fragmentation is to be expected, curious to see what Activision will do going forward. Eventually everyone will have their own DD store for direct sales but it'll take a platform to do that, Steam is leagues ahead in that regard. Blizzard, MS, EA, they'll all be around but Steam is the most feature rich right now.

BTW, for those who can't access it (it only seems to work in Internet Explorer) here is the information you get given if you click the "Support site" link on the Blizzard Account Management page:

Haven't the rumors been going around for a while that Battle.net will be getting revamped? I wonder if they might not turn that into Steam for Blizzard games (at least as far as features go).

That's what I did too. Worked right away.

It's a pretty nice service. I mean, the downloadable games are pretty much exactly the same as the retail version, so you can still add them to Steam (and WC3 even works with the Steam overlay).

Hmm, I tried to fool it by entering the same email address into the new email address, but it spotted that and wouldn't let me change it :(

EDIT: also tried changing it to a different email address and although it went through OK it still didn't send me a verification email.

EDIT 2: and now the account management page has just spazzed out completely, if you try and log back in from the Blizzard Store you get an infinite loop.

The account management page is back, but I still can't get a verification email, I tried changing to 2 different email addresses and still nothing.

20$ For WC3? 20$ more for Frozen Throne :lol :lol

Those games are hardly worth that kind of money anymore.

At this moment, when you start WC3 TFT on battle.net:
battle.net said:
There are currently 59523 users playing 1622 games of Warcraft III The Frozen Throne
so lots of people seem to think otherwise.

DotA alone is worth $40. I quit WoW because I was spending most of my time on DotA.

I can't argue with that. I signed up just fine but have gotten absolutely nowhere since then.

To Blizzard: No Steam. No Buy.

It would be nice if there were one single digital distribution network that everyone was on, but the problem is that in the end, despite their openness and willingness to cooperate with other publishers, Steam is owned by a game developer and publisher. What the world needs is something a bit more company-agnostic than that. Until something like that happens (or until Steam splits off from Valve and becomes an independent entity in its own right) then it's pretty obvious that we'll see this splintering of the DD market happening. Especially when you have companies like EA in the mix who are pretty much actively working against the takeup of DD because of their shitty download store.

I want Blizzard games on Steam. That doesn't mean that I want Blizzard games exclusive to Steam. I don't mind if their catalog is on Impluse, Direct2Drive, or their own website. I just prefer to buy my games on Steam. Not offering their content on the service that is by far the popular, fan-favorite is a disservice their fanbase.

It would be even nicer if there were 2 or more digital distribution networks that everyone was on. Set your sights high!

People don't want to juggle between different download services. With Blizzard's current download catalog their customers have already bought the content before at retail. How is NOT offering Blizzard content to Blizzard customers who prefer Steam not a disservice to their Steam preferring customers.

I really hate this shit of the confirmation e-mail going to the limbo or a worm hole.

This a trick for XP users, use Safari. Using that I recieved the confirmation instantly (and it's the first time I use Safari to browse a webpage :lol )

Like 100tries on FF3.0b5, 15 on IE7 and Jobs saves my day... damn it.

Alright, so ... over the past few days, I've just been trying off-and-on to verify my email address. It just worked. Either they've resolved the issue and I'm just very timely, or the shit is just buggy and you'll have to get lucky. Be patient.

:lol Shit. Was it that important?

Not that I'm one to talk, of course ... but still, you've been quite obsessed with this!

WC3 plus expansion is worth 15$ at most. Any more and you're getting ripped off. There are so many better games you can buy for 40$ it's not funny.

What can I say, I find digital distribution very handy and it means I won't have to worry about losing the CDs again (I already had to rebuy Starcraft once, on budget format, because I couldn't find the original CDs that I had, for example).

Also, since the download method for these games is the standard Blizzard Downloader, it looks like WoWTorrentEx works on them and you can download them in your regular torrent client.

EDIT: other advantages include the fact that it's pre-patched up to the latest version (1.15.2), it's a single download rather than 2 discs, and being digital distro it won't require you to have the CD in the drive.

The problem is that the download is an installer. Once you download, you still have to install it and enter your cd keys to the game manually

ElFly said:

Right, but isn't this how most non-Steam digital distro systems operate? I don't really have a problem with it downloading the installer instead of actually installing the game directly off the internet - for one thing it usually means the download is smaller (since installers are normally compressed) and it also means backing it up is easier. As for the cd-key, there's a button to "View CD Key" on the Games subsection of the Blizzard Account Management page, so that's not a problem either.

Really? Wow, then no reason to use this then. Lost CD keys is why I think steam is better than retail.

shit Safari works, jobs +1

I tried it a bunch in Safari the other day and got nothing, but oh well, whatever works for you guys :D

I noticed that there aren't many people on the Starcraft torrent, so I switched to the Blizzard downloader which supports direct HTTP as well as BT and I'll seed the torrent from my torrent client after it's done.

You do realise that if you purchase the game digitally from the store, they issue you with a CD-Key which is stored in the Games section of the Blizzard Account Management page, right? So you can't "lose" it.

Same if you register an old copy?
