Bloomberg: Nintendo Market Value Passes Sony on Pokemon Go Frenzy

I remember how upset some members were when they heard Nintendo was going to allow the publishing of some of its properties on mobile - and this game wasn't even developed by Nintendo themselves.

I hope this has changed a few minds on the success Nintendo can have when they don't kneecap themselves with their own hardware.

Couldn't have said it better.

-shrugs- I suppose it's up to interpretation, but I saw it as them poking fun at themselves while also being cheeky.

Wait, why would posting this article be making fun of themselves.

When does it launch in Japan?

Nintendo and Niantic says End of July, analysts say that's optimistic and said mid-September.

Lol at this question two weeks later

Q 2
If you look at the balance sheet, Nintendo seems like a blue-chip company, maybe the best or the second best among listed Japanese companies. But the share price seems more indicative of the current reality. The share price fluctuations are the risks to be taken by the investors, and the company management should not be responsible for them, but I believe that leadership has a duty to try to increase corporate value.

It's not the first time this happens, and Nintendo's stock price has not even reached half of its peak during the DS-Wii era yet, so chill, guys.

That article was posted in their initial tweet? Are we talking about the same one?

https://twitter.com/SonyXDevEurope/status/752482376941535232/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc^tfw

Ooooooh, oh. We're talking about two COMPLETELY different tweets. I was using the tweet from Santa Monica Studios that people were talking to you about with while you were referring to the Invisimals tweet from SonyXDev. Both were mentioned in the same breath so i can see where the conversation was confusing. Sa

Pretty crazy, but I think it will die down once we hit the fall and holidays as people's mindshare will be divided among all of the big games coming out.

I'm still upset about Nintendo's properties being on mobile.

However, please do not dismiss Nintendo's hand in this. If you do, you have to dismiss their hand in Metroid Prime Federation Force and other such things.

Plus, Nintendo are the sole thing behind the GO Plus device.

And, one success != guaranteed successes. You do know that there have been a lot of Pokémon games on iOS/Android before this, right? They haven't done well. It being on mobile does not equate to success or quality.

Honestly the spike this last week has been nothing short of miraculous, even if you count in speculative/hype-driven purchases. Did the market really not price in the potential of mobile, and Pokemon, for Nintendo? I kind of regret not joining the craze. Jumping in at any point last week would have still made a pretty decent turn over the weekend.

Just think we could have a Mario go exclusive to mobile devices. Touch screen platforming goodness. I think we've moved past the need for dpads and physical buttons.

/s

In all seriousness I'm happy the game has been such a success for them. However, I think they realize they caught lightning in a bottle and we won't see them abandon proprietary hardware. I think it makes sense they continue to move titles that fit Android/iPhone such as Animal Crossing.

It'll obviously level off and come down at some point, and come back down, but the spike is pretty crazy, and I'm glad that this thing has been so successful.

Still stunned it took them this long to get into the mobile business, or really extend any of their brands to other media. Now they're working on movies/anime/mobile games/theme park attractions. It'd be great for them if their other efforts, branching out, saw even a fraction of Go's success.

Yeah, my original response was to someone who mentioned the Invizimals tweet. I guess the person who quoted me brought in some confusion. No worries.

The types of people buying those games and the types of people playing this game are largely different. What percentage of gaf do you think plays mobile games in the first place. This is a Wii vs 360/ps3 situation or more relevabyly mobile games vs everything else

I'm still upset about Nintendo's properties being on mobile.

Ignoring the potential revenue from mobile would have been reckless endangerment of the company's future, they could not afford to ignore that after the relative failure of the 3DS and Wii U.

As long as they stick to the principle of releasing mobile-specific titles that are distinct from their traditional offerings, I don't see any problems. The more revenue streams Nintendo has, the better.

Oh I completely agree. They had to do it considering the Wii U wasn't doing well. Still grumpy about it, but like you say Nintendo are doing it so the mobile titles compliment their dedicated titles, not replace, and that I am fine with.

Pokemon Go caters to a much wider audience. For all we know the majority of the ones playing this may not even own a current gen console right now unless you refer big games as mobile apps.

I'm still upset about Nintendo's properties being on mobile.

Keep in mind, a vast majority of Nintendo's revenue still comes from traditional video game business, hardware and software. Even if the PROFIT is paltry, they still made over 2 billion dollars last year in revenue. Mobile will serve to accent that with even more revenue while they mostly focus with the NX.

So how long til Nintendo purchases Sony?

I'm kidding!
Am I?
No, but seriously, congrats to Nintendo.

Wait....So McDonalds Japan started giving out figures and saw that bump....even though the game isn't even available here yet?

Fuck. Japan is FUCKED when it releases. Chaos. I see chaos enveloping the land.
Incredibly polite chaos, but still chaos.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
The account posted an article about how the game's success doesn't mean much for Nintendo or something.

Now the Sony XDev Europe tweet, that was really salty, where the person literally was like "Invizimals did it first".

sony sure feel salty over Nintendo's success with Pokemon Go there

I'm embarrased for them, this is some bottom tier console warrior crap, and probably one of the saltiest things I've seen in regards to go. It's not even a direct competitor to most of Sony's more core offerings so there's no meaning to this

Launch NX with Pokemon GO NX.

Deeper experience while using the handheld to go and and raise them. Put handheld in the console system and fight players all over the world.

Kind of ignores part of why Pokemon Go is so successful. It's free and on devices owned by hundreds of millions. What this actually proves is that Nintendo's IP's are hugely powerful (as if there was any doubt), and people will swarm on them like flies to shit when $300 hardware doesn't stand in the way.

Really hope this lasts, and proves a long term success.

I think it's a little misplaced to believe that people aren't going to be exposed to the marketing machine of the industry come fall especially with Sun and Moon coming out. One of the biggest factors for Go's success is the insane word of mouth from everyone on social media, etc. Once the holidays roll in, the video game headlines will be dominated by the big games coming out. Nobody is saying that people will just stop playing Pokemon Go, but be wary of severely overestimating Go's lasting appeal during the slowest time of year for games and right as we are about to hit the "playoffs" so to speak.

.

I hope this has changed a few minds on the success Nintendo can have when they don't kneecap themselves with their own hardware.

I don't think it's really about the potential for money for me. I hate gaming on phones so I want Nintendo o keepmaking dedicated handheld hardware, and mediocre games like Go aren't going to change my opinion. Even if it does make obvious financial sense to go in that direction.

Pokemon Go caters to a much wider audience. For all we know the majority of the ones playing this may not even own a current gen console right now unless you refer big games as mobile apps.

The interesting part to me is that people who are out playing Pokémon Go don't even have the option of switching to a different game on their home consoles. They can play other mobile games, 3DS, Vita, etc. but I think people are more likely to go do something other than game when they are out and about than go home to sit on whatever game they typically play. Pokémon Go's design inherently blocks out the competition because you have to leave your consoles/PC to even play. That's a big deal - people playing Go are NOT playing the competition's games.

it is because investors misunderstood Nintendo involvement with GO, right?

No.

GO was spearheaded by Ishihara of the Pokémon Company and Iwata and Nintendo are directly responsible for the GO Plus.

Just because Nintendo didn't develop it doesn't mean they weren't involved. You can use the same logic for Metroid Prime Federation Force, yet people are so quick to trash Nintendo for that. You can't have it both ways

The majority of people making GO a success don't care about consoles, let alone read the headlines on videogame websites. They're unaffected by what happens in enthusiast communities like GAF. We could have 300 AAA PS4 games come out tomorrow and it wouldn't affect Go's current success because it's an entirely different audience.

The nostalgia of Pokemon is too strong. I wonder if shows from that era can capitalize on such success.

Like, what if there is a DBZ phenomena on the same scale coming? Or maybe augmented reality Yugioh (yeah right Konami)

What did they misunderstand? Are they not the main owner/stakeholder on the title?
He's being sarcastic and poking fun at the people trying to downplay Nintendo. :)

Nintendo heavily invested in Niantic and is a majority stakeholder in TPC, and also own the trademark on the logo, characters, etc. They're the controlling interest on the franchise. Pokémon only appears where they allow and in the forms they allow. They're profiting and in a position of power here, even with a couple other stakeholders involved.

Pokemon Sun/ Moon benefiting from Pokemon Go's popularity is what Nintendo aims with regards to mobile games section of their business (use Nintendo IPs to mobile games to attract them to buy console stuff) so that one is more beneficial for both games if the objective succeeds. As for other stuff like big video games taking in the headlines especially on the holidays, there's really no huge audience overlap here. Big titles from the major 1st party and 3rd party companies never stopped Candy Crush and Clash of Clans to continuously dominate the mobile gaming sector, for example. The only thing that will really kill Pokemon Go at this point is a big mobile game hit and the appeal just loses and audience moves on to that next trend.

Completely irrational. As will the downfall be when Nintendo announces a project which isn't Pokemon or mobile related.

Huh thinking about the mcdonalds figues, I wonder how the pokemon related amiibos have been doing during this craze.

I don't think they were salty; it was posted in jest.

Nah, definitely salty. The senior producer also tweeted what was effectively the same thing from his personal account.

I don't really get the salt, what makes Pokémon Go work isn't the camera AR (though that contributed to the spread of the game on social media). If it were then Pokémon Dream Radar, an AR game which preceded Invizimals Vita by a year, would have taken off. But I'd forgotten it even existed until those tweets.

I can't wait for the inevitable
Yokai Watch Go Level 5
Monster Hunter Go Capcom
Dragon Quest monsters Go Square Enix
Pachinko Go Konami
