WTF!!! I DIDN'T KNOW INNOCENCE WAS OUT ON BLU RAY!!!!!
...dammit sure its an import though and aren't blu-rays not region free?

Innocence came out in Japan last December with English subtitles. North America and Japan are the same region for Blu Ray, so you'll have no problem watching it as long as you're in North America.

It is pretty pricey, though. It's got a retail price of something like $70. I got one for $55 last month, which is still ridiculous.

Yah, I am.

Can you explain why you would honestly think that? This is a gaming message board. Ofcourse people here will buy PS3 for gaming first, bluray as extra feature. You have to go out of your way to upgrade your 360 to play hd dvds. If the question was asked how many people bought a PS3 solely for Bluray, then I think you'd be surprised.

HD-DVD.

I own the 360 add-on and 17 titles.

My favorites:

The Bourne Supremacy
Batman Begins
Casablanca
The Deaparted
The Sting
The Thing
V for Vendetta
The Last Samurai
NIN - Beside You In Time

:)

basically it comes down the films and I'll watch them on whatever format they're on....Though at this point the war, I honestly am pessimistic about HD-DVD's future =/

Bluray is technically not region free but japan and the us are the same region so it is all good to me.
Innocence is breathtaking on dvd, full english subs.

Or was that all for show.

I have both the 360 add-on and the HD-A2 Toshiba player with 16 titles (It helps that I get a nice discount). However, i'm really leaning towards Blu-Ray because of the much greater amount of support. I'm gonna be purchasing very soon a PS3 or Sony's cheaper BRD player when it comes out. I've only been waiting on the PS3 because Sony can't get something as simple as scaling resolutions right. I'm merely waiting until they get that right in a firmware update or with a slight revision to the hardware which they always do without saying. Either that or more AAA games, they're getting close.

Oh, I bought the HD-DVD add-on alright. But after getting the PS3, and seeing how much easier it was for my wife (who is more into watching vids than I am) to operate the PS3 than the 360 for watching HD movies (XMB FTW), I decided on my one-format future.

My HD-DVD drive now sits abandoned, and I am considering selling it, as I don't plan on buying additional movies for that format.

What made it easier on the PS3 over the 360? I don't think this is the type of experience Toshiba wants with its brand.

Interesting, My family finds HD DVD a lot easier to use. I have the PS3 Bluetooth remote too, so its not just the controller. Put the movie in the drive, it starts playing. PS3 you actually have to go through the XMB and select it. Still hoping on that auto play blurays in next firmware update.

How much do you want to sell your drive for?

Seriously? I find autoplay annoying. If you want autoplay, just pop the disc in when on stand by.

I'm actually hoping the next firmware upgrade eliminates the autoplay through some option. Sometimes there's a disc in there but I don't necessarily want to execute it on start up.

I also find auto play annoying, but its perfect for family members that just know how to turn something on and have it start playing, like they are so used to with DVDs.

But besides the point, I'd still love to find out why his wife finds PS3's menu system easier to use than 360s once in a video. Or is it just starting the video all together not even getting using the menu settings.

I think he means getting into the video. Like you said, I think people prefer minimal interaction needed to get something done.

i wish i could tell the ps3 to autoplay when i insert a disc. my harmony remote takes care of browsing the 360's menu to the right spot to start a film when you press the required button, but you can't do the same with the ps3.

this might sound stupid, but i don't want my family members to have to touch a joypad to play a blu-ray. i have something set up that lets them use the harmony to browse the blu-ray menus but it doesn't work in the ps3 menus sadly.

telling them to turn it off if it's on, and then put a disc in is amazingly more trouble than they want to deal with.

I have a ps3 in the house(my sons) but no one has asked for any bluray movies for it yet. In fact, I don't think R:FOM has been ejected since we've had it.

As for myself, I'm still dvd until this format war gets settled.

That's exactly what I meant. Booting up, starting a video, ejecting the disc, starting another video... I bought the PS3 Blu-ray remote for her, and after that she told me she never wants to use the 360 HD-DVD again. The XMB feels more like a consumer device, an advancement on the kind of interface she has been using since the DVD days, and something she is far more comfortable with. Just wish Sony had packed-in the remote.

EDIT: plus I put our home movies on the PS3, so using the XMB she can easily scroll through those...

this sort of argument makes no sense to me. more so when you actually own a Blu-Ray player already.

you have a system that can play Blu-Ray movies. even if HD-DVD wins (which isn't the safest bet right now) or BOTH fail, you will still own a PS3 that can play Blu-Ray movies.

they won't come replace it with one that can't. you will still be able to play all your Blu-Ray films regardless of whether or not Blu-Ray succeeds.

Well for one thing I don't go into my son's room to watch movies.

:lol Don't really understand, how is that exactly what you meant? 360 requires less interaction to get a movie started eject it and get another movie going.
XMB feels like an advancement to the DVD days? What dvd player did you have where you had to select play disc?

I can understand the home movies easier to get to, you can see the animated clips, vs having to go to media blade then clicking videos. But thats not really the point at all.

That means you'll get Pirates and Cars!

Hook me up!! :D

I used to get doubles, now it seems my bro can only get me 1 copy of each movie.I think someone else in his office has a PS3 now :( For a awhile I was selling them on ebay and making some extra money :P

Yea I cant wait for their big releases :D

I am currently an HD-DVD supporter via the add on drive for the 360. I only own three titles though:

King Kong
Batman Begins
Serenity

As soon as I get my tax return I'll be picking up a PS3, and I'll be in the Blu-Ray camp as well. Looking forward to checking out Casino Royale in HD.

BluRay - I support it due to superior technology.

I know that while some may not have a serious issue supporting multiple formats (me included) ... having both around will lead to slow adoption ... which means less titles for me to buy ... and potentially the death of both formats.

With that in mind, I'm trying my best not break down and get a HD DVD for the select titles that are exclusive.

Anyway, I've got a PS3 ... and 11 titles I believe.

HD DVD

360 add-on (8 movies)

Lucky Number Slevin (you guys pick up this movie!)
Constantine
Chronicles of Riddick
King Kong
Batman
Departed
Babel (worst $30 ever)
House of Wax ($18.99 @ my local Best Buy)

When Bluray players come down I'll pick up a standalone player. I've changed my mind about getting a PS3 (despite LBP looking hot)

I want HD-DVD to win, but from the start I believed (and still believe) the failure of HD-DVD is inevitable because of the PS3. You just cant compete with the install base that will be there because of the PS3.

:lol Zaptruder is great - say what you like about him, he can get a response.

The main quote I have to take issue with should easily identify which camp I am in. DVD only supporters are not luddites - they are not wanting HD formats to fail generally, they by and large just don't believe that they will gain traction with Joe Sixpack.

I have a 37 inch screen (HD as well mind), which is pretty sizable for the *average* uk punter. I have seen both Blu-Ray & HD-DVD on similar screens to mine in comparison with a run of the mill DVD player, and whilst the jump in quality is obvious to a moderately discerning eye, it's not as apparent to the unwashed masses.

Whilst I don't think that the HD formats will end up quite like laserdisc or SACD/DVD-A, I don't think they will get anywhere near DVD levels, unless the studios completely phase out DVD.

For your average Joe Sixpack, DVD is "Good Enough", and will be for at least the next 4-5 years. Maybe at that point HD formats will start taking over, but even then I'm doubtful.

It's not at all about what what you think the market is going to do as it is about; what do you personally want to support? If you can appreciate the qualities of HD media, why the hell should you give a toss about half blind dickheads off the street?
