yeah i'm cool with playing two games at once if you want to take the time to learn on this one nf. or not, either way.

Well picked up Dominion and Race for the Galaxy yesterday. Haven't had a chance to play either yet. Dominion seems very simple rules wise, and fun. I basically got RFTG just because i love puerto rico, and this is obviously very similar. It also just seemed more interesting that san juan. The rules to RFTG seem a bit rough, but i'm sure i'll get it eventually.

Definitely takes a few games to feel comfortable, but they've got really good iconography on the cards, so once you do adjust, you will need few rules consultations.

If you are playing two-player, start out with the "Advanced" rule or whatever they call it where each player gets to pick two phases each round.

I saw this while briefly going over the rules, is it possible to play 2 without the advanced rule? Is it any fun? I assumed that coming from puerto rico, it would take about a million rounds to get stuff done in a 2 player game without picking mulitlple roles/phases.

Oh it's definitely possible; I certainly did it for a while, just less strategy and longer. Really no point to play otherwise unless it's just for learning purposes In order (and I love them all): 2p Advanced>4p>3p>2p (never played 5p).

Well I just put in for Intrigue and RvI. Added C&K and That's My Fish! to round out the shipping. I need to take another picture soon--I swear my collection has doubled over the past few months.

edit: oh i also picked up artists & benefactors because hey $5 why not. also my wife has been on a catan kick ever since we started playing the board game in our group.

Picked up Intrigue today!

Cards look awesome and cant wait to get some games in. Some of the new attacks are brutal.

Saboteur: Each player reveals cards from the top of his deck until revealing one costing 3 or more. He trashes that card and may gain a card costing at most 2 less than it. He discards the other revealed cards.

Swindler: Each other player trashes the top card of his deck and gains a card with the same cost that you choose.

Just wanted to chime in that Dominion is so worth it. Got it about 2 weeks ago and my wife and I have been playing it non stop. She isn't much of a hobby gamer but She is addicted to this game. Very replayable and lots of fun. Can't wait to get expansion.

Weekend gamin' for me: Battle Line, Magic. No time for a game night this week, but I'll be back with a vengeance next week.

I played a bunch of games of Intrigue last night and the new cards are really great. The only problem I have is that because the cards are more complex, when you play a game with only Intrigue cards the pace of the game really slows down.

Tribute seems like a early favorite and there were a few times when Tribute alone produced 6 coins when played with a throne room. I also lost 2 provinces one game to Saboteur attacks but still won with Harems. If you are playing a 4 player game swindler also seems to be a good attack card to use to finish the game quick if you think you are in the lead.

Another neat thing is that now because there are 1 and 2 point victory cards that have actions/treasures on them, it seems that curse cards actually can have an effect on the score at the end of the game because more of the small point cards end up in peoples decks at the end of the game. I lost a game because I had 2 curse cards

My early 3 favorite cards from Intrigue are:

Shanty Town - + 2 Actions, reveal your hand, if you have no action cards, +2 cards (still get the actions, so if you draw some, sweet). I like it more than the standard village now.

Baron - +1 Buy. Discard an Estate for +4 Coins. If you don't do that, gain an estate. This guy is so awesome it's not even funny. +4 coins? Seriously. I almost want to try a deck with nothing bur barons and estates.

Trading post - Trash 2 cards. If you do, take a Silver into your hand. I lucked out and had a 5/2 start recently and bought this in the first round (costs 5). I had no copper in my deck and a bunch of silver really pretty fast.

I like Masquerade a lot more than I thought I would too.

Bridge seems ridiculous but I haven't got to play with it much yet: +1 buy, +1 coin and all cards (including the ones in your hand) cost 1 less.

I sat down and played a 4 player game of.... A Game of Thrones (board, not card game). I think I'm in love. I suppose it helps that I won. I kept biding time with a slow start and an unspoken allegiance with Tyrell. Late game I had 5 cities under control from Dragonstone down into the southeast. Tyrell kept his flank highly undefended as I snuck some ships around the south so I could transport in behind him. He made an unwise march out of the Reach leaving it undefended. I split a single march, capturing the Reach with a lone unit and pouring my knights into Oldtown via linked ships. Even with his Steel token, he couldn't best the might of Stannis Baratheon, and I took the instant win conditions.

Let's get at least one of our two T&E games going dudes!

Light weekend for me. Played some Catan and Magic. Getting an M10 box and theme decks next week; we're quite getting into it.

Dominion + Intrigue is great.

Shanty town is very much like the village. It's not useful unless you have some kingdom cards for the +2 actions, and if you do, you won't always get the +2 cards.

Baron is very good for a fast start, but becomes less useful later on. Sure, Baron + Estate is 4 coins, but so are two silvers (which aren't useless on their own).

Trading post is also a good card early on, for streamlining the deck, but it also becomes less useful as your deck improves. I like it that there are several trashing cards available besides just the chapel.

Masquarade is interesting. It's ok for pulling cards and trashing, and it can lead to interesting situations once people have hands full of good cards.

Bridge encourages you to buy lots of cheap cards. The +1 coin, -1 price is essentially the same as having one silver coin if you only buy one expensive card - and a gold coin if you buy two cheap ones since the -1 price affects all buys. You can join it with the saboteur, workshop or ironworks to buff their effects as well, but it's not that easy since you also need +2 actions cards for that.

I really like dominion also. A couple friends and I played it non stop on Saturday. I love it. One of my friends is a village whore though and makes it his point to buy most if not all to all of the villages in the deck, which then allows him to take about 4 minute turns. Talk about frustrating, He's still only won 1 game out of at least 5 this way.

I will definitely be picking up intrigue.

I can't believe out of all you Intrigue-havin' fools none of you has picked up Rebel vs. Imperium yet. Ah well, my CSI order (Intrigue+RvI+etc.) gets here Friday. And I'm playing RvI FIRST. Damn straight.

As cool as RFTG seems, I can't get anyone to play me due to the daunting learning curve. It's not the rules that are too bad, it's the symbols that make people run for the hills. Dominion people can get in about 2 rounds of play.

I don't blame you. It is a pretty terrible gateway game. Going San Juan-->RftG though is cake. I always teach San Juan first now.

I have Race for the Galaxy coming in the mail sometime this week. Hopefully I can get some of my friends to play it, despite the learning curve. I'm not that worried though, I managed to get them to play Dungeons and Dragons, so a simple card game can't be that difficult.

Dunno if this is the right thread for it, but I went to the M10 prerelease this past weekend and had a blast. First sealed event I ever went to and I think I did OK placing 5 - 6 out of 20. I went in hoping to go WU or WG but my cardpool didn't support it so I ended up going BU Evade/Control thanks to an absolute slew of flyers in my pool. G dominated in the end, though, with all 4 of the people at the final tables using it as a primary color. (3 guys played GW, including the one guy who beat me in Swiss and lost me a shot at the prize pool, and the other guy played RG)

Anyways, did any other Magic fans go? Are there even any other Magic fans here at GAF? :lol (Besides the new Xbox guys joining the party with DotP)

See San Juan didn't really interest me, since it just seemed like Puerto Rico lite. RFTG seemed like a better choice since it added some twists to make things interesting. Now though, i'm thinking i might want to pick up San Juan since people might actually give that game a chance, and hopefully move on from that to RFTG.

only netrunner fans here sry.

jk i played it literally when it first came out and am getting back into it now. wife and i are playing with the jace v chandra duel deck for now and i have the m10 theme decks and a booster box coming in at the end of the week...so yeah.

RftG is just San Juan in space! I do agree that it's certainly more interesting though. Between RftG and Citadels, I don't use San Juan for too much anymore other than as a gateway game (which it's pretty damn good as).

Haha, i understand they're pretty much the same thing. Maybe RFTG just seems cooler. I figured I already play Puerto Rico, do I really need another game themed on colonizing it?

It wasn't in at my shop yet, but Intrigue was. Plus, I'm not the one in my board game group that owns RftG... it's owned by the couple that has a 4 week old baby and no time for board gaming right now, so it'll probably be a month or more before I get a chance to play it.

Really looking forward to it though!

Hey, I work over at Games of Berkeley, we're a store that only does boardgames or card games, or basically any non-videogame games. Has anyone picked up Space Alert? I got it a while ago, but haven't been able to plow through the rules (left it at work). There was such a huge hype train for it and then it kinda fell off the map over at our place. Anyways, I look forward to posting here a bit more often, this is actually a thread topic I constantly work with :D .

When I stopped in Berkeley on my last drive through the bay area, I stopped in your store. Nice place!

I have yet to visit either GoB or Endgames. Online prices are too good to pass up. :(

I have one of those families that set things on fire in anger in the midst of a heated boardgame. So naturally we play alot. Trivial Pursuit is always a fun way to feel smug and superior and leave friends and family with crippling self esteem issues.
Another favorite is the dictionary game (I think it's called boulderdash officially). one person picks a real word or movie title or date etc... and every writes down a fake definition or synopsis or event. Then you try to trick everyone else into thinking yours is the real one.

ohhhh god GMT is having a blowout sale (thanks to a poster on QT3 for the tip-off):

http://www.gmtgames.com/news.aspx?showarticle=134

Getting Carthage, Alesia and Glory III for sure, will probably throw in a preorder for the Twilight Struggle 2009 reprint and PQ-17 (my wife likes TS, and PQ-17 will probably be played only via Cyberboard/Vassal after I figure it out by myself).

Really good prices there. Might actually just gobble up some of the non-sale stock because 50% off is a really good discount-thinking about getting my dad a copy of Empire of the Sun for Christmas so we can PBEM it together.

Astrolad, need a recomendation.

* 2 player game
* english comprehension can't be mandatory, if spanish is available it's ok

I was thinking of getting the Twilight Struggle upgrade, but looking at the prices I might as well just order the new edition instead of all the upgrade components as it's only a couple dollars more.

I want the new TS but BEH no real reason to get rid of the old one.

First game that comes to mind is definitely Mr. Jack. Deceptively simple game where two players--Jack & the inspector--control characters on the board, with Jack trying to escape or outlast the inspector before having his character discovered. Lots of strategic depth even though the rules are quite straightforward. Includes Spanish rules and no in-game text.

Don't feel like reading through for it, but I work at Toys R Us and we sell these and was wondering if any GAFfers can tell me how they are:

harry_potter_clue.gif

Funny because a few years back I played the following at an ex's house and we loved it, but said a full on version of Clue would be better. Is the Clue version better than this one?:

And then the second game I was wondering about:

No firsthand experience, but BGG says (keep in mind that BGG is essentially the GAF of boardgaming, so this stuff is the equivalent of "casual gaming shovelware" here):

Harry Potter Clue - 6.51/10 average, 29 ratings

Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone - 5.38/10 average, 94 ratings

Office DVD Board Game - 4.38/10 average, 12 ratings

Clue is one of my all-time favorites. I've never been a fan of trying to mix classics with pop culture. The good old clue is timeless and no context is necessary to make it fun...

Also keep in mind that the site doesn't have the 7-10 scale that we're use to from video game sites. The highest rated game on there is an 8.28 at the moment, so Harry Potter Clue is actually rated fairly decently.

I actually got the Office game as a present. If you're a huge Office fan (which I am), it's decent fun for a couple plays. Bit tedious even for what it is though. DVD games are just brutal. You're much better off doing what we do and just watching a Season 2 episode for the 20th time.

Don't forget that BGG has suggested definitions for their ratings, though not all users necessarily adhere to the guidelines when rating something. A good amount of users seem to use the guidelines as a base at the least:
