Damn I hope they find out whoever did this and punish them accordingly.

You guys think there will be video discovered of the people doing this? With all the smart phones people have in a populated area they'd think someone must have accidentally taped the bombs getting planted and not realized it.

That's still terrorism! Terrorism isn't just an extremist with bombs on his chest blowing himself up. A lone madman who plants bombs to injure innocent people and cause chaos...that's terrorism.

You're right but when people hear terrorism now it's usually implied that it was an event caused by a known terrorist group.

I went out as soon as I heard about it, about 30 minutes after the first blast. At one point they cops all rushed to push all of us in doors in expectation of a third blast which was pretty tense.

Do you go to Northeastern? I didn't know that side of campus was that hectic. :/ Columbus is pretty quiet except for a couple fire trucks looking at a suspicious package.

CNN says certain equipment has been found, so it's most likely a bomb.

Okay. Thanks for the update.

I'm kinda hoping it was some sort of gas leak or some other tragic accident rather then a deliberate act to kill and maim as many folk as possible.

Oh god the GOP isn't going to do the same shit again like they did for the embassy bombing are they?

I don't care what the fuck they do; I just want to know what the fuck happened so we can stop any future attacks. If it's the GOP or the dems that press the issue if the police force can't figure it out, I don't care.

It's a terrorist attack. Not CNN faults that people wrongly think that means it is of Arab origin. Maybe they can actually be educated on the word this time and stop thinking only Arab's can be terrorist.

2315: Officials with mobile telephone carriers Verizon and Sprint said they had received no requests from authorities to shut down service in the Boston area, contradicting earlier reports.
"Minus some mild call blocking on our Boston network due to increased traffic, our service is operating normally," Sprint spokeswoman Crystal Davis told the Associated Press.

What is the strict definition of a terrorist attack? Does it imply a certain number of people involved/a faction or something? The end result is the same, whether they label it as such or not.

a surprise attack involving the deliberate use of violence against civilians in the hope of attaining political or religious aims

According to dictionary.com.

we dont know what their intent was. but we can make some pretty educated guesses.

Not calling it a terrorist attack is an interesting thing.

It is a terrorist attack, but now days that term means something different than this. People now associate it with someone outside the US coming in a perpetrating it (e.g. Al Queda). Saying "terrorist attack" puts an image into people's minds when it could have been some local nut (which is also a terrorist attack, but not the type people think of).

Acts of terror are terrorist attacks. Sandy Hook was an act of terrorism, by the hand of a deranged local. People assume terrorism means another culture, a faction is at war with something. Attacking civilians in war is a war crime, outside of war is terrorism.

There is no universal definition of terrorism, the different US agencies even have have differing definitions.

I have to say that Fox News showing the bombs exploding to the side while he was delivering his conference, and playing the audible of people screaming over his speech, was the poorest showing of news journalism I have ever seen.

Fuck my work for only showing Fox News.

That's disgusting.

No paycheck is worth that.

NBC: "it was useful to hear from the Boston authorities knocking down some rumors out there that they had a suspect in custody?'

who was spreading that rumor? oh yeah:

Mike McCaul (R-TX), House Homeland Security Chairman, is saying he had seen reports earlier that ball bearings were used in the explosions "indicative of international terrorism".

Seriously this. Let the MODS do their jobs.
This please. People have done so already and we'd prefer that you continue in that vein as opposed to quoting the same assholes over and over again.

Save the link, send a PM to a mod or admin with the URL and we'll take it from there.

SMH. Gross.

So how much more secure is Homeland Security gonna get after this? I mean, what more can be done that has already been done?

Still cant believe there was zero security at this race..

The speculation culture with 24 hour news is so disgusting, it really is. It propagates fear and provides misinformation and can even hamper peoples understanding.

Now everything resets. The idea of terror is now reset and it'll probably take more years to recover.
People are hurt both physically and emotionally.
People will blame anyone they can, they'll blame the government, they'll blame ethnicities, religions, races. And probably will continue to do so as a reflex even after the real culprits are found if they can be found.
So if you can, try to stay calm and not panic and start saying everything that comes to your mind.

Obama isn't going to call something a terrorist attack till he has learned firmly who is behind it....at least I hope he learned that lesson.

I think we all know that the word "terrorism" has taken on a new meaning in America. Seems pointless to deny this.

Absolutely. With all the folks there and everyone being a pseudo cameraman with their iPhones, we will have dozens of videos by nightfall
