Bombs detonated at Boston Marathon finish line

So how much more secure is Homeland Security gonna get after this? I mean, what more can be done that has already been done?

Still cant believe there was zero security at this race..

There was security, the problem is that it's impossible to completely secure a marathon due to it's length and the amount of people in attendance.

I have to say that Fox News showing the bombs exploding to the side while he was delivering his conference, and playing the audible of people screaming over his speech, was the poorest showing of news journalism I have ever seen.

Fuck my work for only showing Fox News.
What the fuck. Wow.

You guys think there will be video discovered of the people doing this? With all the smart phones people have in a populated area they'd think someone must have accidentally taped the bombs getting planted and not realized it.

I think most of the footage will be focused on the runners and not the crows. But it's possible that some video shows a bystander coming with a bag and leaving without it.

I understand not wanting discussion to turn into a nasty blame game between posters. It's a a shame we're not collectively mature enough to have such a discussion, but it is what it is I guess.

This please. People have done so already and we'd prefer that you continue in that vein as opposed to quoting the same assholes over and over again.

Save the link, send a PM to a mod or admin with the URL and we'll take it from there.

I personally feel like requoting offensive posts helps make people like this more visible, and helps educate posters on what is acceptable and what isn't. Although, I do feel we go overboard sometimes.

There is nothing you can do at a Marathon. You cannot fully secure 26.2 miles of race in the middle of a city where people can wonder in and out. Runners all have bags. Runner's families probably are holding them for them. Runners typically toss clothing off during the race (it gets collected up later and donated to charities). It is impossible to secure a Marathon, it is a very soft target.

It's not about whether the event falls under the definition of terrorism or not, it's about whether the event's primary objective was a terrorist act.

What the hell do you mean there was zero security? You see all those cops? They're not there for fun.

Sometimes you can do everything right and still have a bad thing happen.

Not looking forward to the political fallout from this. Stupid quotes and hyperbolic hindsight from all over Washington at the victims' expense.

WBUR had a terrorism expert from Harvard on earlier, and she was stating that sharpnel most likely came from the hollow metal point fences that were adjacent to the explosion.

Considering how many were injured, I wouldn't be surprised if something like that were used as shrapnel. :/

Hoping every one of those 100+ injured people pull though...

Actually could have been just the glass/other materials at the scene. Anything would have been accelerated to an insane speed.

Correct, local news even reported that they had bomb dogs sweep the place. The guy could've put in the bombs after the initial sweep.

I think we all know that the word "terrorism" has taken on a new meaning in America. Seems pointless to deny this.

So what's the new meaning? Muslim acts of violence? Violence against America perpetrated by non-Muslims is now no longer considered "terrorism" and our "war against terror" is now just a "war against Muslims"?

I mean if that's the case, that's pretty disgusting in and of itself.

omg ballbearings?

don't know if fact yet.

As in something like a Claymore? Awful.

One of my coworkers grew up in Lebanon and saw a lot of bad stuff. He just did the LA marathon a few weeks ago and he finished around the 4 hour mark, similar to the time when today's bombs went off. The news really had an effect on him, you can see how he's relating to it from different directions.

More conjecture, but from the image of the blasts and what little physical damage we see vs. the amount of blood/people injured, leans to a shrapnel-based device over pure explosive power.
