Bungie's Harold Ryan - Delay is "not a laughing matter"

Don't think this should have got it's own thread to begin with, but who would seriously believe that Harold Ryan or ANYONE at Bungie laughed about it? They'd been working for weeks, months to put together this announcement. They had to make a trailer, had to set up stuff at the convention, they did the ARG stuff on Bungie.net, and little things in the Bungie Weekly Updates, they got all their fans excited and then Microsoft made their work go to waste. Wouldn't you be pissed that you worked hard for nothing and disappointed your fans at the same time?

Don't worry guys Nintendo delay's things and laughs at it's fans. MS haven't gone there yet.

It's thread worthy because you don't do this shit in public... and if you are, things have already got out of control.

Wait. You mean he did't laugh and say, "Boy, just a sign of growth inside the business, we agree?" Don Mattrick, lying liar?

I'm shocked.

I don't think anyone believed it, rather the news is Bungie seems to be pretty pissed by contradicting Microsoft publicly and embarrassing Mattrick.

What the fuck is going on at MS..?

There are a lot of good things happening in the Xbox division. BUT, the people responsible for cutting off Bungie's hand just like that were obviously utterly completely out of their minds.

MS owns the Halo license. Thus, they can do anything they want. Bungie just needs to suck it up or start another original IP.

Seriously. You do not fuck around with the studio which put you on the map in the first place.

Uhm... because Bungie would have gotten as big as they have without Microsoft pumping money into it?

Seems to me Bungie needs to hold off their comments.

edit: Seems Bungie is too eager to show how independent they are...

It could have gone either way, but Bungie was not in the best position to stand on its own two feet shortly before the buyout.

EDIT: Yeah, this act Bungie is doing of being pushed down by the "man" over the last few months is getting really annoying. Other studios don't do it, and it just feels dirty when Bungie does it.

I think I need me a Don Mattrick avatar:lol.

Boy, just a sign of growth inside the business, we agree!!!!! It's friggin' Halo!

Delay is never a laughing matter.

MS bought Bungie, MS didn't come up with Halo. The only people in the wrong here are MS, how is the Bungie president supposed to hold off his comments when Mattick lied about what he said?

You know what I meant, the Xbox product.

This is so Big Brother 10. Bungie is Rennie and Mattrick is that lying weasel Jessie.

Eh. When Mattrick 1) cancels Bungie's E3 announcement, 2) announces that Bungie is working on a new Halo title, thus spoiling Bungie's secret and then 3) lies about the Bungie President's reaction to said cancellation, I think he's in his rights to say something.

There does seem to be a bit of a pissing contest here, and as the publisher it's clear who is in charge of that area (especially if the game is a Halo project - MS holds the IP, so they call the shots).

Have tensions between a major studio and publisher ever been so out in the open like this?

And without that... Bungie would be as big as they are today? Microsoft is the publisher of the game.. they control the marketing for it, Bungie needs to shut the fuck up and stop whining about it.

I think Bungie must be terribly envious of the positions Naughty Dog and Insomniac have with Sony. This public brawl of back and forth is just embarrassing, and its not suprising Bungie are probably still feeling bitter. A public trade show showing of a title is VITAL to the development process, not just to get the public hyped but as a sort of pick-me-up for the developer. To finally show what theyre making and get a potentially uplifting positive reaction does wonders for the dev process.

This is made even worse by the fact Bungie is very proud of the relationship it keeps with its fan-base, and to have its hands tied to essentially betray that trust was probably a very hard pill to swallow. Then to add insult to injury, Mattrick shoots his mouth off that theyre working on a new Halo and jokes "look how awesome we are, we didnt even need Bungie here at E3!! Ha ha ha ha ha!!"

Is publishers delaying game reveals pretty common? We can look at the situation based on precedence.

I've never seen it happen with buildup as big as Bungies. They had a countdown, loads of viral marketing, lots of stuff leading up to the event.

No, but what I'm saying is MS owe a lot Bungie for creating the Halo IP, and they shouldn't be messing around with their announcements at the eleventh hour.

I don't think anyone would really care too much if Bungie didn't have a timer up on the frontpage of their website with a countdown set for 24 hours time. MS could have done it a week earlier and spared all the embarrassment and angry fans, but their timing was terrible.

i thought the reason bungie got out of the microsoft deal was beacuse they didn't want to get stuck making another halo game. but... they're making one right now, apparently. somebody fill me in here.

I'm liking Mattrick less and less with every interview..

BTW, I've not been keeping up, but does Bungie have contractual obligations to MS regarding doing a certain number of Halo games? I'm sure Bungie wants to continue to support Halo, obviously, but I had the impression they wanted to focus on some new stuff for a little while.

The majority of Bungie studios love Halo and would continue to work on another halo game. They're at the manpower size to do Halo and 2 other projects at the same time.

Bungie stays Microsoft-exclusive after breaking off and MS still treats them as if Bungie was owned by them.. :lol

I honestly think Bungie's event was cancelled as part of a general strategy to preserve the 360's momentum since Microsoft had alot of it coming from the FFXIII announcement. Not to forget that Bungie's announcement was timed to be right after Sony's, which was probably a prime time to disrupt any good news that Sony had (see Microsoft's plan of timing Halo 3 with PS3's release). I think after they saw that Sony had shit all, they cancelled Bungie's announcement to leave another trump card to be played in a later convention.

Apparently it didn't happen with Bungie's consent.. :lol

I recall an interview with Harold Ryan back when Halo 3 shipped. He said a lot of the guys at Bungie had been making Halo games for six or more years, and were ready to move onto something new.

But another group at Bungie loved Halo, and wanted to explore some ideas in that universe. So Bungie is working on multiple projects, with presumbably one of them Halo related. In the last Weekly Update, Luke said Bungie has three projects in development right now.
