Buying Old Apple Products and Why I Do It

Not open for further replies.
Alright. I'll stop this and stop sharing with the world my decisions. I think that's a pretty good call at this point. I'm done from here on out on this thread.

i would honestly love to hear how the products work for you when you get them. keep us informed :)

The 2010 MBP is going to be fine for you OP, I use a Windows gaming PC from 2006 from time to time and even that works fine for what I use it for(it is starting to get long in the tooth though).

I have a friend who just bought an iPhone 4 a couple months ago as well, working fine for him too(and he's on the latest OS that he can get on the phone), only thing is that he's locked out of some apps on the store because it's not compatible with his OS,

That said, I think you overpaid for your iPhone, said friend only paid $80 for his and it's in perfect condition.

So it has come to my attention that many of you have told me I have made a horrible mistake ordering $600 worth of old Apple products from 2010 from eBay. I choose to think differently. I have never owned a single Apple product in my life and I thought to myself, why not just buy older products that are already outdated and not even give two fucks about the product cycle? If it's already outdated, then I don't have to worry if it is not the latest and greatest. So, 2010 was a great year for Apple and they had some really strong products. They had the flagship MacBook Air product that redefined what it meant to be ultra portable by combing elements of iPad and iPhone to the the notebook computer. They had the revolutionary iPhone 4 which featured a beautiful stunning retina display and glass front and back design. They also had the original iPad which you can enjoy consuming media such as books and movies at a pleasureful pace.

All these solid products have led me to go back into the past and upgrade my current devices to newer ones. I currently have a Toshiba laptop from 2007 which is show its age and a RAZR flip phone from Motorola on AT&T. So, I figured it was finally time to jump aboard the Apple train and buy as many of the good apple products of the time as I could from eBay for under $600.

So, why do this? Well, I fell that the continuity between devices back in 2010 was elegant. It was a more simple time to just charge and sync devices with iTunes and not have to worry about all this iCloud baloney. All my devices will be running stock software such as iOS4 and Snow Leopard for a smooth and clean experience that goes back to a simpler time. As time goes forward, more features and more bloat are added to the devices, making them less user friendly than before.

Anyways, if you don't believe me and think I'm trolling, I'm not. Here are some eBay items I purchased:

So, we can discuss this here if you wish. I'm willing to debate. :)

You're bucking society's "Must Have The Shiniest Thing At All Times" attitude and it makes people question the life choices and the thousands upon thousands of dollars they've spent trying to keep up with trends. Of course the reaction is going to be a bummer.

You got an iPad, iPhone and a MacBook Air for under $600? Hot damn.

It will be tomorrow when I am able to pick up the 2010 MacBook Pro. I'm looking forward to assessing the wear on it and figuring out what to fix. This is sort of a fun hobby of mine to fix and repair old tech. I put in a new PSU for an iMac 2006 model and a 1 TB hard drive before. Fixed an old iBook whose display cable was wonky.

Haha it has nothing to do with that attitude. Everyone would totally be on board if someone decided to forgo the "must have the latest thing" trend and get last year's or year before that model which is a lot cheaper but still functions. It's when that person decides to dive half a decade back because of some odd fascination with a specific year to buy tech that will barely function that people start to question the dude's sanity or if it's even real or not.

People are seriously still replying to this guys troll thread like it was real? It was obvious from the second page he's a troll.

Yeah his youtube videos pretty much confirmed this. Still, I have nothing better to do right now, so keep on OP.

That, plus getting things practically overnighted from ebay.

Do you troll-truthers think people who make terrible choices don't exist and this can only be a high effort/zero payoff troll thread?

The trolling is his weird obsession with the year 2010, the pretending he's some constant user of archaic tech, etc.

He might be buying these products, but his overall story and way of talking about it is a troll.

He owned or owns a Galaxy S5 yet paraded his alleged ownership of a RAZR phone in the thread like it was some indication that he only uses old tech.

Of course, this ain't one.

Very poor joke thread by a troll.

You think this, but it's not true at all. I don't know how I can convince you that I seriously am going to be using a 2010 MBP, 2010 iPhone, and 2010 iPad. These devices aren't even bad! Still functional!

Cognitive dissonance is a thing.

Rereading the last section I am now confused. You fought tooth and nail in the beginning to justify a clearly bad purchase of the laptop. And now you've some how canceled that purchase and magically a friend is giving you a free laptop. All within the span of 24 hours. How did you go from being willing to spend $500 on garbage to finding $500 of free garbage?

Okay, time to fess up. I did lie about my back story... at the risk of being banned for this, I'll tell you anyway because I did you wrong...

My own first computer was in 2001 and it was a Dell Dimension desktop that ran Windows XP Home Edition. It served me well, but by the year 2006, a friend of mine on the internet told me what a Macintosh was and that he loved it more than PCs. Needless to say, I wanted one so I worked up some money and bought a 2006 17 inch Intel Core Duo iMac from CompUSA (when they were still around). I loved the shit out of my iMac and loved Mac OS X Tiger. Now around that time I had my first cell phone from AT&T and it was a Nokia flip phone that was pay as you go if I recall. I never did quite like that phone, but sure enough it go the job done. Now as time went on and the year went by, I became more and more obsessed with Apple. So it's no surprise that when I was in school and the first iPhone was announced at MacWorld 2007, I jumped and was estatic to own one. So, I ditched my Nokia flip phone and worked up some money to wait in line on launch day for the original iPhone. I bought it and tried to sell it on eBay at the time because the demands for those phones were astronomically high in price. I bought the 4 GB version and tried to sell it on eBay, but was scammed. I was just about to ship it when I noticed the PayPal email was mis-spelled a bit so I called it off and just took the phone back to the store, because I wasn't willing to pay that money for the phone at the time. So I stick with my nokia phone, but later on when the iPod Touch came out in 2007, I bought one of those since it was cheaper and more affordable. I jailbroke that device and had ENDLESS amounts of fun tweaking and changing how it looked with summerboard (a UI customization application for jailbroken phones known now as winterboard). That was all well and good, but then when the 16 GB iPhone came out in February of 2008, I had enough money saved to where I could sell the iPod Touch and buy that particular phone. So I bought the 1st gen 16 GB iPhone from AT&T on a contract and neglected to buy the iPhone 3G. Time went on. In 2009, I was once again eligible for an upgrade so I upgraded to the iPhone 3GS because I had saved up for it. Kept the old iPhone just for novelty sake. I enjoyed the 3GS, although I did have it break on me within the 1 year warranty because the screen went black and I had to replace it at the Apple Store that opened up that year, but I did love the device. And then, something changed. In 2010, we switched carriers and I ended up ditching the iPhone 3GS for the Galaxy S from Samsung. I sold the iPhone 3GS as well to provide some money for Galaxy S. I also ditched my old iMac and bought a 2010 MacBook Pro for college. I then went to the iPhone 5 when it came out, and then to a Samsung Galaxy S5. Selling each of the devices every time I swapped over. I also then during 2011, bought a 2010 IBM ThinkPad and started using that instead of my MacBook Pro and gave the MacBook Pro to my sister. I then ditched the ThinkPad for a Toshiba Ultrabook that I am using right now to type this. It cost $300 and is not very good.

Follow all that? I don't see why you could. It's complex and I've been through a shit ton of devices. So now I'm in my 2010 phase where I just want to back to Apple and reminiscence in what it was like when I had my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro. Those were great days. So I'm doing what I can to make it happen.

Then don't. I can't leave this thread. I just can't. I think its fun to document my findings.

Well it's even more obvious you are a troll then. It was what, a handful of posts before that you said you'd stop posting in this thread?

He owned or owns a Galaxy S5 yet paraded his alleged ownership of a RAZR phone in the thread like it was some indication that he only uses old tech.

Okay, why is this crazy bms2993 guy still allowed to post his made up bullshit about 2010 when he in the past was posting about owning a S5?

If you look up a few posts, you'll see my true story. That's all I have to say. I'm sorry I told you all a story... but me buying the 2010 stuff? Entirely true.

You can download older versions of applications that are compatible with iOS4. I think you need to give Safari more credit than that. That's a highly advanced browser that still stands the test of time. :P

i dont get it - why does everyone think he is trolling? what is there to troll here..

He's talking about iOS4 Safari here...people are having a hard time believing him because people just do not talk like this. It's like he's trying his best to provoke criticism with every, extraneous thrown in word.

"I can't wait to activate my iPhone 4 on AT&T wireless"...it's just...it sounds weird.

I don't necessarily doubt that he is buying this stuff, what I doubt is his incredibly strange obsession with 2010 Apple.

Proof the OP is a 100% troll. He claimed he was using a RAZR prior to this and the iPhone 4 was his first smartphone he is getting and how excited he is.

I've been really impressed with the battery life on my Galaxy S5. Seriously. Wow. And just to clarify, this is just light usage. Google Maps navigation, browsing GAF, tweeting... yeah basic things like that.

So my Samsung Galaxy S5 is now running Lollipop for a pure nexus-like experience. This is the stuff dreams are made of, my galaxy breatheren:

How old were you in 2006 when you bought that iMac? How old were you in 2007 when you bought(even though you returned it) the iPhone, or the iPod Touch? How old were you in 2009 when you upgraded to an iPhone 3GS?

Using your current given age of 22, assuming you aren't lying about that too, math says you would have been around 13, 14, and 16 respectively, give or take a year. Where did all this money come from? Are you some spoiled rich kid from Beverly Hills? Because there was no way in hell when I was 13 or 14 I could even think about buying an iMac, I was scrounging up money to be able to afford N64 and PlayStation games.

The validation you seek will not be found in devices.

Yeah, your relationship with your phone and computer is weird OP. Isn't it like the things you were doing with them that made those times good? Completing school assignments, talking to friends, stuff like that?

I was using a humongous 15" HP laptop during the time I lived in the school dorms during undergrad. Great times, but if I bought that laptop and tried to use it now it'd be a piece of shit.

I dunno, I don't understand you OP.

I don't even understand myself anymore. I need a hug. :'(

Before I get banned, the long wall of text I posted on this page is my true story

You changed your story completely. It went from how you never owned a smartphone before, how old all your tech was and how hyped you were to get a smartphone and how a iPhone 4 will be plenty speedy for you compared to your old RAZR.

The fact you use a Galaxy S5 makes your points of how hyped you are for a iPhone 4, how it will be plenty fast for you, that you don't want to spend a lot on tech as pure COMPLETE BULLSHIT

You aren't excited to get a iPhone 4 when you have a high-end android phone. You were just trolling, your post history proves it.

Ok, GAF, you got bms2993.

This will be my final post under this guise, this IP Address, and on this forum.

For 12 years I have browsed and utilized the web using outdated technology. It is a dangerous place, no doubt, I mean we hear about a new computing technology damn near everyday. In all this time, I have gone through about 23 different old devices, and I must admit that this is the first time it has come back to bite me. In the end nothing changes, GAF will go on, I will go on, my identity remains unknown, the whole thing works out for me, albeit slowly and with frequent crashes.

I never could understand the idea of buying modern hardware for net anyways, FaceBook, Myspace, Social networking sites in general, never used em'. But my mistake with bms2993 was forums. GAF in specific immediately try's to take away a layer of protection by demanding video evidence of my purchases, luckily I came through despite lying about my reasons. Ah wells, that should get me a permanent ban right there, hopefully. A valuable lesson ! But that's ok, one doesn't need to "talk" about old computers to enjoy them.

You know, when I first found GAF I had never intended to post. I was just amazed at how often GAF had news before some of the major classic computing websites. Something got the better of me, and I felt like buying a really old set of Apple hardware. Ah wells, never again, or perhaps again only much more tight lipped.

Anywho, I apologize for nothing. Nobody was hurt, lessons were learned, time was wasted. I Regret nothing, some talks were fun, some trolling was fun, and some posts on GAF were absolutely hilarious to read. All in all, GAF was fun, but nothing I'll miss. If I want, I'll just proxy my way here now and then, to go over some OT's and browse some news.

And now, you are left to wonder how many others wander the net, or GAF in specific, spewing all kinds of bullshit about what they buy or who they are. The numbers are dizzying I imagine.

I will say though, I know for a fact that I am not the only bms2993 out there. So don't go hunting them all down, they didn't bother you or GAF for that matter.

Goodbye, GAF.

He is a clear Android fan trying to bullshit Apple fans about how timeless their products and tech are and how fast and timeless they are. He should have realized he actively posted in Android threads about running Android on his S5.

Again to those who may have missed it:
OP claimed he used a RAZR.
He was hyped to get his first smartphone so iPhone 4 would be plenty fast for him
He doesn't like spending a lot on tech products so that is the newest phone he is willing to get.
He only wants 2010 tech devices

Yet.....owns a Galaxy S5 despite claiming never owning a smartphone and thus iPhone 4 is plenty fast for him.

He then completely changed his story soon as he got caught.

More of his previous posts:
I can't wait for the Samsung's Lollipop update for the Galaxy S5. Hope it brings tons of new features to the table. Apparently they say it will release in December.

So, on my Samsung Galaxy S5, I decided to get rid of TouchWiz Home and replace it with Nova Launcher among various other tweaks. Here's my homescreen! What's yours look like? :)
