Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

80% of my encounters with other players in this game are "I went around a corner that they were hardscoping"

The other 20% are "He was headglitched behind a barrel which I could see because players silhouettes are impossible to discern"

Can't say it's a lot of fun.

Pretty much my experience too.

Also why does it take so many bullets to kill people on gun turrets, it takes like 4 shots to kill someone yet they just shred you instantly.

War mode is almost impossible to play because of this on attack as you can't take out the defenders once they are on the gun placements.

This is reminding me why I didn't want CoD to go back to WW2, at least not yet. The class customization is such a step back and is boring. I would rather this be its own playlist like how it was in Black Ops over having it's own game.

They need to fix the aim assist. It seems to have trouble in this game and creates a 'resistance' when you try to aim at people. Worse afair where it seems like it's pushing your reticle away.

I thought it was just me! Glad to hear not. I got the same feeling of not being able to "snap" on to someone when I saw them. It frustrated me to no end since I've been playing Titanfall 2 and a bit of BF1 and never encountered this before.

No ping/connection bar? Not a fan of that.

Anyone else still waiting for the email with their code? I redeemed mine on the site last night and still haven't gotten an email with the PSN code.

Kind of feeling it so far. One thing that is shocking though is the night and day difference in the game play pace of Ardennes Forest and Pointe du Hoc vs Gibraltar. The first two feel like some cramped Black Ops 2 style maps, and I was able to play those exactly like I would Ops 2 and wrecked house. As soon as we got to Gibraltar and I tried that play style I was completely stifled, stuffed at the line of scrimmage by snipers and people posting up. The second time I played the map I adjusted and slowed it down with an AR, but it was jarring how different it played from the other maps. Flanking left is absurdly painful with how long of a haul the path is.

I'm not sure I understand the "perk" system yet, if there literally are no perks and you just get the "perks" of whatever division you're in. If so that's interesting, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I kind of like that we aren't super powerful with some of the restrictions imposed, but I can see how it would feel like we players are being completely gimped (such as only having one lethal/tactical combined slot unless you use a specific division).

If a code is available for you at this moment it should tell you there. If not I'm surprised and wish I could help but am clueless.

Ugh, the quickscopping.

Yup, this.

I like it. I think the game is an improvement over BO3 and IW, but the movement is too fast, and quickscoping is rampant. Meaning death is all too frequent.

It rather clunkily tries to squeeze the essence of Battlefield into COD and the results are.... disengaging.

I will play more but it's nothing to write home about.

Lmao

been watching videos of the beta on YT, and it just looks... weird?

like, i knew this would be COD, not BF or anything, but it just feels like they slapped WW2 skins on top of a normal / modern COD game.

that's not how previous COD games [like 1 through 3] played at all.

i can see why they'd go this route, but it just looks weird as fuck to me so far.

obviously will refrain from judging until i can play it on PC [or One X], but man this looks weird so far.

My PS4 Pro's fans go absolutely WILD while playing this.

It sounds like it is about to launch into outer space.

Any one else?

I wish this game looked better than it does. Really wish COD would reinvent itself instead of reskinning the same game they have been since MW2.

It'll still make them billions though so why would they.

ahh, the old "i did poorly in a small sample size of matches therefore i hate it"

Or maybe i just want a good current gen console ww2 mp game but cod still plays like cod and i grew tired of this formula years ago. Low ttk, tiny static maps with no destruction, constant spawn flips in everymode outside of war, outdated non weighty animations and movement, no squad buddy sytem ala moh warfighter/battlfield(once again tiny maps make this pointless) lack of vehicles, killstreaks/perks adding randomness and frustration, laggy netcode. Cosmedically and tonally ww2 looks cartoony with its dual wielding, red dots, female characters, and uniforms not matching the maps im on. Why is a basic soldier running around with a gas mask in the ardennes? War mode should be a step in the right direction but the small size of the map reduces all dynamics out the window. The rounds play out the same way, at the same points. World at war and mw1 had a much more basic approach thats been lost.

Played 4 games of Team Deathmatch last night, I like it. It plays like the classics which is super nice but I feel some of the SMG based guns like PPSH or Grease Gun needs rebalancing with range. I've been rocking the M1 and yet I am somehow getting the feeling that I am being out ranged by a machine gun when I am using a rifle.

I'm hoping to try out objective based games tonight so I'll post more impressions but so far I'm liking it.

Also, has anyone managed to get a party going? Seems like the party system is not working correctly.

Well, that just solidified my preorder . Game is back to the old school gameplay and I love it . Guns will be tweaked of course so I'm not worried about that . Sound effects are excellent . Lots of upset future soldiers in here I see and it puts a smile on my face that cod is back to boots on the ground :)

It's unbelievable how little this franchise has changed since Call of Duty 4 came out a decade ago. The lack of ambition shown by each of the developers is embarassing.

I guess it feels better than the last few... but that's not saying much. The game suffers from almost all the problems CoD4 did, plus a fair handful that were introduced after (overly versatile assault rifle, circular map design, crappy spawning placements, lack of gun idle, prevalence of camping head glitch positions, lack of recoil, crazy low TTK... list goes on)

I don't think CoD games are for me anymore.

I'm disappointed but I think the majority of this comes down to my own expectations. I hoped for a slightly slower more methodical (?) shooter, especially when they said they were going back to their routes etc. But now I remember it's all about eSports.
I don't know if methodical is the right word, but my memories of CoD UO and CoD2 were much more than running around and spraying a PPSH. I tried using the M1 and in the end just had to fight fire with fire and run and gun with a sub machine gun as the M1 just wasn't doing the damage.

It's too fast paced for me. I'm not bad at FPS games, I'm decent at Bf1 and Titan Fall 2, not so bad at Halo games either but I'm struggling with this.

Well I guess the beta has saved me £50 and a subsequent eBay listing.

This was already a real easy pass with the fall releases being what they are but fucking yikes. Stuff like this kills any remaining interest. I'm so over that style of multiplayer gameplay.

But it doesn't play like old-school CoD at all (assuming you mean CoD 1 or 2). Those games were MUCH slower paced.

This legitimately feels like a re-skinned MW2.

Had a few games. I'm loving it so far.
Graphics are cool, not ground breaking but sure as hell does the job.

I've hated on COD for years, Repetitive/Graphics/Engine/Direction etc.
But now, I can feel Call of Duty is coming back.
*wipes tear*

I have to admit, playing on my A40's the sound design is fucking on point. I can pinpoint where people are and the battle chatter is amazing. I love the whizz of bullets a la Saving Private Ryan too.

I do not like the small maps though, and the snow map is just chaos, so many lanes to cover off you just get shot from everywhere.

The game is also a lot slower paced than I am used to after playing lots of BO3, my sensitivity settings are now on 4 and it still feels slow.

Also lots of sweaty bunny hopping players about still thinking they got exo suits and putting those SCUF controllers to use, I can see that being a really big annoying problem in this game.

Just had a Hardpoint match and the end of round kill cam showed someone getting kills while missing half his shot. Was this an issue in the previous games?

How is the map design?
Couldn't stand the 3-line design bo 2 and 3 had

Still largely split into lanes, maybe a little less obvious about it, and a little more crossover in areas.

But it doesn't play like old-school CoD at all (assuming you mean CoD 1 or 2). Those games were MUCH slower paced.

Man, I wish. That might actually be fun for players who aren't just using SMGs. Hell, the proficient shotguns and handguns alone would make it worth my while.

Always been the case, they have varying degrees of BS.

I had one last night where the guy got a kill and his crosshairs weren't even on the guy he shot.

Maps are the worst. So many short corridors so checking a lane, moving on and 3 secs later you get shot in the back from the spot you just checked. Makes the AR almost useless.

Movement speed and sprint times are super low which I love and finally the guns have tons of recoil and the flinch effect is greatly reduced.

Hoping for better maps but in gamepay terms this might be reaching BO1.

The sound on the garand is glorious.

I swear that clip eject is the loudest thing in the game. Guy can be reloading 10 feet away and around the corner and it sounds like he's reloading inside of my ear canal.

Where's the iron sights on bolt action rifles?

I believe it's an attachment you unlock. I forget what it's called specifically, but it's an early one.

I was gonna write up a long post last night about this but then deleted the whole thing, because I was thinking it was just me. There have been so many times where it feels like I'm fighting to even get my iron sight on someone.

Couple of other small issues I have with it, but I've enjoyed what I played. It's not more black ops 3 or infinite warfare, if that's what people are looking for. Those games are much faster. Not saying this is slow, but just don't in expecting the same pace of play.

Well I can't say I like it...

+:

- The visuals, I think it looks really great in HDR.
- Performance is really great.
- smaller maps.
- Audio is fine.

- :

- Movement speed and sprint times are super low.
- The feeling of the weapons is bad.
- Lag and hitbox are real issues.
- Quickscoping... meh.
- Aiming is different, slow and pretty bad, you can't strafe really quickly and it handicap the shooting...
- Class customization is really bad but it's WW2 faults.
- Maps are smaller but not well designed.
- The range of some weapons are ridiculous but that can be fixed.

I dislike what I've played overall, the game is pretty but the game isn't fun, the shooting doesn't feeling great, the maps aren't well designed, the class customization is poor, the gameplay is too slow and the lag/hitbox issues are terrible, I'm out.
