Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

Always been the case, they have varying degrees of BS.

I had one last night where the guy got a kill and his crosshairs weren't even on the guy he shot.
Seriously? Fuck this game then. Won't be buying another CoD game till that's sorted. Game breaking problem imo.

Shame, considering I liked a lot of the things on paper.

Gun damage feels quite inconsistent, on some matches I'm able to get kills like bread and butter but on other ones it feels like I'm using rubber bullets.

Back to blops 3 for me. Not feeling any of the guns or maps. That trench map is awful. I'm too use to the fluid movement in previous cods can't get use to the stiffness.

Save us treyarch.

Being a WaW fan boy WWII has left me disappointed.

Where the hell is the atmosphere?! Everything seems all too colourful and friendly for me. It should be darker, grittier and moody but it feels like a stroll in the park.

The voice over guy is terrible. Such monotone I can't bear it.

This guy in WaW made it sound like it actually meant something to be capturing or losing a flag.

Got to around rank 11 I think and just stared at the TV with no motivation to play anymore. Game play wise I'm happy but the atmosphere is breaking it for me.

Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman as announcer were really great.

WE ARE TAKING THIS DAMN FLAG!!

Yea, if there is a complaint from me it's the atmosphere. It doesn't "feel" like WWII. I like the weapons, the movement(no super jump wall running BS) and the sounds. The gun play is COD. The atmosphere feels modern, though. Not sure what they were thinking there.

To those who are saying the game has good sound design: Have you tried the first sniper rifle? Sounds like somebody's banging the lid of a trash bin!

I played CoD WWII for approx 45 mins last night.
I played WAR first.
It felt like I was playing DOTA 2 in regards to the map construction. 3-4 lanes toward the first of multiple objectives in an open-ish area (think Rush-Lite/Fat Free) where you just need to do something (I supported, do you just hold a button to build that bridge?).
Once that's done you move forward to the next objective by choosing 3-4 lanes. It was probably the most underwhelming objective based mode I've ever played in an online shooter. It was just corridor after corridor (there was no freedom to actually flank).
After that I played Team Deathmatch.
I simply cannot get over the slow plodding movement in the game. This has been a problem for me in the last couple CoD's. The game is so fast paced but the movement feels disjointedly slow. Like from the waist down you're pushing through water or something, very sluggish. The Map was like a spiderweb in that you had so many corridors and very few open area's that fostered quick reflex over any semblance of tactics.
I feel like it's just the same CoD they've been making for the last few years with just a couple changes and a re-skin. When did they switch to the current Engine their using?
I understand they're adding game modes but the underlying tech and CoD feeling feels like the last 2-3 games.

From what little I've seen it looks too fast, and the players jumping all over the place destroy any sense of the setting.

For WW2 it would make more sense to replace jump with a context sensitive mantle option. Save the crazy jumps for the sci-fi settings that need it for wallrunning and the like.

Call of Duty has always been a jumping fest, since 2003.
Go find another series.

Feels dated for me. Battlefield gets away with it because the scope is wider (but even then I preferred 4 to 1) but this just feels like it won't take long to get old. I get why they did it but I feel the choice of weapons and 'stuff' befitting WW1/2 really lent itself to the restricted nature of older systems, and going back to it now feels like the game is lacking.

Just my thoughts, interested to see where they go from here.

Yeah as annoying as it is, for many it appears to be as important to jump as pressing shoot these days. So many that buy Call of Duty also go out their way to buy custom controls for easier jumping.

edit

And it only really started happening often since Advanced Warfare.

No it hasn't!

It was dropshotting, then the exo suit era happened and they've been flea jumping ever since, and now people cannot stop jumping with their SCUF controllers everywhere, like fucking rabbits.

Never played CoD before?
The killcam isn't showing what actually happened.

Need to give this puppy the full weekend it deserves until I make up my mind. So far having lots of fun, but it already feels familiar to me (and I haven't played since MW2). War was incredibly underwhelming. That map while building the bridge... is there something I'm missing? Just a very uninspired choke point. Maybe I've been playing too much Overwatch, haha.

PUBG it is. Thanks Activision, saved me some money.

If this IP wants to succeed into the next generation it really needs something new and fresh. Starting with a brand new engine, better servers, better hit detection, better spawns, and much better map design and game flow. The core quality of the game is severely dated.

Jump shotting was a thing way before jetpacks. In blops2 it was better than drop shotting in most situations.

Yeah, that's the only thing I see when I watch streams of this. But it still sells so why would they change it?

No it hasn't. Corner hopping has only really been a thing since maybe BO2, but mostly AW.

Shit didn't happen in MW1, WaW, MW2, or BO1 that's for sure.

I don't think that's true at all. Corner hopping has been a thing since earlier versions of CS. It's been in everything. Prevalence is a different story.

Played for 3 matches and it was enough for me. COD WaW was 100000x better, it had dismemberment, flamethrowers, bigger maps, vehicles and the overall WW2 feel that is totally lacking on this one. Such a shame.

The funny thing is on the beta you know exactly who will be corner jumping everywhere, it's the players at the high levels already. 99% chance they playing with SCUFS too.

Sweats.

They might not do until it seriously starts bombing. In recent years they have got away with adding 'cheap thrills' to keep things 'fresh' and players coming back. First it was going over the top with perks and kill streaks. Then new movement abilities. And now back to the fan favourite, WW2.

But really these have been weak and lazy additions to an already tired game. I'm not sure how long people are going to keep falling for it. Particularly when other shooters are on the up and up and there is overall great choice in the shooter genre.

I thought it was pretty fun from the 3 or 4 games I played but my interest and critique of the CoD series is generally pretty generous. Either way its a decent change of scenery

You sound salty learn how to play the game and get a scuf. You just told someone they don't know what they are talking about when discussing jump shotting and you are so wrong. Of course all the good players, pros and streamers are playing so it's gonna be sweaty. If your decent at the game it shouldn't matter.

Jump shotting has always been a thing to varying degrees in every cod and this is before jet packs. Maybe you just don't know as much about cod as you think you do.

Are honor and shame huge parts of It?

You shouldn't need to buy a modded controller to play the game effectively. The fact that they cater to Scuf users is a bit disgusting.

They need to fix the aim assist. It seems to have trouble in this game and creates a 'resistance' when you try to aim at people. Worse afair where it seems like it's pushing your reticle away.

Im so glad im not the only one who this happe ed to. Felt really weird. This really helps people who are set up at a head glitch, which needs toned down a bit.

Lol, I do fine thank you. Not the greatest, but not a potato by any means. Why should I have to buy a SCUF? Did i explicitly say someone didn't know what they were talking about? If I did, that wasn't my intention.

I don't care about sweaty players, or people that are better than me, that happens, what I hate is the people who jump everywhere, and no, I have been playing since COD4 OG and I have never seen so many jump shotters, it was prevelant in BO2 but was not before that.

There seems to be many more black women in the German WWII infantry than what history has taught me

There are also many more King Tiger Tanks than the 25 that were actually used in the whole war, there are tanks using weapon attachements that were never actually used, certain armies are using certain weapons that they never actually used...it's almost like this game is historical fiction that is more about what's fun and what sells than historical accuracy :P There were women in the Nazi Forces, there were black people in the Nazi forces, so, sure, why not. This isn't where you should go to for historical accuracy^^

Of course they are. They want their free copy when the time comes.

Might wanna remind yourself how they reacted to Infinite Warfare.

Come on now. I'm positive about the game. I've loved what I've played. Some things need to ironed out. A couple of matches were laggy etc. But I really like War mode and I really like just the basic run and gun in this.

So I started playing about 25-30 minutes ago, and I'm currently at level 15. These are my pros and cons of the game.

Pros:
- I love how the gameplay feels. When I die, I feel like I'm actually getting outgunned now.
- The game is more than serviceable to the eyes in HDR.
- The details in this game are actually surprising. Seeing bulletholes and body damage where the guns rip you apart, and seeing a realistic blood pooling effect on the ground helps add just a *little bit* of grittiness to the game.

Cons:
- Netcode hiccups are definitely still here. There are some people that feel like they're sponging bullet damage about every other three games.
- The game feels a little sterile in terms of atmosphere. Beyond being a CoD title, it really has no set theme that it dives into. In WaW, you can tell that they were going for a dirty, gritty feel in terms of theme. This game just makes me feel like I'm watching a bunch of toy soldiers or something... it's very off-putting.
- Something fucky is going on with the STG. I feel like when I picked it up off of other people, that I was somehow taking more bullets than usual, specifically while I was ADS'ing with the gun.

It's an instabuy because I love the franchise, but I just feel like this is one of the churned out installments. I don't feel like any passion was put forth into this game by Sledgehammer. Even with it just being a beta, a game that was worked on for three years probably shouldn't feel this devoid of character.
