Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

I'm only really playing out of sick curiosity at this point - how in God's name has ten years of progress beyond Call of Duty 4 lead to this thoroughly mediocre garbage?

There was a real opportunity to use WWII as a reset, to throw a lot of the franchise tropes out and provide a really gritty and impactful Call of Duty game, instead we've got yet another reskin. It's laughable that the time to kill feels lower, and the guns easier to use, in this game than they did in Call of Duty 4. It really sums up how superficial the World War aspect of this game is.

For the most part therefore it suffers from the same problems as all the other CoD games. The assault rifles are too versatile so it's hard to understand why you'd use the SMGs, LMGs, or snipers. The circular maps and spawning system conspire to ensure you never have any idea where your enemy is coming from, making practically unpreventable deaths from people behind you extremely common. Head glitching is still a thing. This game seems to feature far, far more people corner jumping and dolphin diving than even the CoD games that were based around movement and 'momentum'. There's just so little to like. I do kind of like the bipod concept with the LMGs, which I think is new, but that's really about it. The sound design seems really lacking, particularly in terms of how loud things are that are right next to you. The number of times an enemy is seemingly silent despite being a few feet away sprinting is ridiculous.

The War game mode is particularly disappointing. It's a good idea on paper and one I've been hoping to see fo ra long time. Yet the map design is simply appalling. It basically turns into a slugfest between the attackers who have to run and gun and the defenders who have to camp in windows. The bridge area is quite unbelievably bad, I can't believe anyone signed off on that. Who the hell thinks that it's a good idea to have an objective which requires you to be ompletely without cover, in a game where the time to kill is practically zero and spawning isn't even remotely delayed? The objectives feel befitting of a game like Overwatch, with tanks and shields, not Call of Duty. It's not like the other objectives are really interesting or play well, but fuck me the bridge is dumb.

Well yes, if they step in the Molotov flames, they will catch on fire, but it's mostly a visual effect. What you need to be paying attention to is the amount of hits they actually receive from the flames. If they don't receive mortal damage from the flames, the flames will just go out eventually and they will recover their health. You have to shoot them at that point to finish them off.

If they are already weak enough from bullet damage and then catch on fire, but not from a direct hit, it make take less hits before they die from the flames.

Good to know. Thanks.

Went 21-7 in my first game which was TDM. Couldn't even go even in Infinite Warfare. Feels like I'm playing COD2 all over again.

Sounds like more negative impressions than positive impressions in this thread. I'm sort of getting the same mixed vibes on Reddit as well. I didn't preorder, but I might not even until some changes are made.

My first COD in 7 years.

I had to adjust my stick sensitivity which is something I never have to do.

You have to progress through the game to get good. The more/better you play, you get rewarded with better equipment.

No sign of Nazi stuff anywhere. Shame, only bought the game to kill some Nazis.

The classes are really interesting, hard not to go USA all the way though.

I'm not really a huge COD junkie but I've played a good number of them and this just feels off. Especially the movement, I feel like I can't sprint for more than a few seconds without the game just slowing me down like I'm in quicksand out of nowhere. I understand that different classes have longer/faster sprinting but I'm using the Airborne class which should be the quickest!

Also have the last few games made using ADS force your character to slowly walk forward? I don't remember this at all but it's fucking me up when I use it and my guy won't stand still even without touching the left stick.

This isn't the COD to get me back into the series based on my time so far. I still have Advanced Warfare sitting here in my backlog, should I just fire that up and get my COD fill for the next few years?

OMG, I would get obliterated in IW, but in this, I'm like a completely different player. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I can't stand the jetpack, slide and shoot garbage anymore.

...Have you played the game?

Like I don't think you have if this is your statement. 90% of matches are SMG fests.

AR's outside the STG are hilariously underpowered.

Also saying that all CoD's suffer from AR's being too versatile kind of shows you maybe don't understand them as much as you think. Just 2 games ago, in BO3, SMG's became too strong.

I wonder if there's even an AW population anymore. I feel that the longer CoD games have been out, the more modders appear as well.

The sprinting definitely needs to be addressed/increased.

Man it seems I'm stuck with his turkey. Under settings account management wallet I can't refund it. Well, back to BF1.

Wow, great post.

Anyone who is saying they actually enjoy this beta is either a blind CoD fanboy who plays every day, or is on Activision's payroll. This beta is a shambles and a bad joke. :D

I dont think this game is downsampling on 1080p. Havee they said if the beta has Pro support? Looks identical to me on both consoles.

Or maybe they actually like the beta because it's a lot of fun.

And can you elaborate on how the beta is in "shambles"?

Probably not best to argue with someone who claims the game was made in response to BF1 and made in a single year.

Yeah...

I mean I have my own problems with the Beta but to say it is in "shambles" and is a "bad joke" is just hyperbole.

Good point.

It's my first time playing COD multiplayer this gen.

I hate it. In TDM/Domination 90% of my deaths are from getting shot in the back and War, the only interesting mode, suffers from its trash map and objective design.

I'd like to know what the WW2 setting adds to the multiplayer in this. Everything feels way too fast and weightless. Visuals are pretty mediocre too.

I was gonna get the game for campaign and zombie mode, but if this how it ends up feeling I'm not sure I'll bother.

How does this game look this dated three years after Advanced Warfare?

Am I imagining things, but didn't Advanced Warfare look much better than this? And the same studio made this game THREE YEARS LATER.

I am so, so confused and perplexed.

Sounds like a new COD. Same impressions every year.

Well here is (staged) screenshots from both AW, BO3, IW, and WWII.

I do think it looks better. Though it can be hard to make direct comparisons with AW, BO3, and IW with WWII.

is it me (my gamepad) or is the spring funcinally broken? it constantly stops while i sprint, making it difficult to cover large distances.

SP for AW looked great, don't really remember the mp looking fantastic.

Something about the game feels stiff and off. I like War, and the fact that it's not crazy flying shit, but it doesn't feel as smooth as it needs to.

was the grenade spam always this bad? In war mode just keep tossing grenades when you can.

Grenade spam has died down in recent years of CoD because of the Pick 10 system. This made it so you didn't have to have a grenade in your loadout. So naturally not everyone ran grenades. However with this, EVERYONE has grenades now. So now the grenade spam is back.

i mean, it's call of duty. negative impressions are a guarantee.

in fact, just skimming through this thread reminds me of how awful the fans of this game are. when a new call of duty comes out, it's just constant bitching and whining about everything. same exact shit every year. just a completely miserable fan base.

Basically. Maybe my memory is off but I recall even BO2 getting negative impressions here when it came out despite it being known to the community as one of the best in the series.

In today's market place its an insult that they hock this garbage at gamers. A 6v6 tiny map FPS in today's market is almost assuredly a F2P game. 60 bucks for an ever re skinned decade old game is insulting.

But, i do realize that this game targets 10yr old gamers now despite ratings.

I changed my mind and lost all hope for cod, please never embarrass another real war with this trite garbage, go back to space battles and robot shit.

Edit. The grenades sound incredible though.

6v6 on tiny maps is F2P games? LOL.

I forgot since when did bigger = better?

I always get a kick out of the slew of posts shitting on a COD game because it plays like a COD game. It's like clockwork.

If you don't like COD, why play it anyway and expecting it to be a different game, and then bash it when it's not. It's like buying a sports car when you only like SUV's, then complaining that it drives like a sports car instead of an SUV. lol

And people being somehow shocked that the modes are 6v6... are these troll attempts or something? Modern COD has always primarily been 6v6.

Well I mean, the guy was running off screaming, completely engulfed in flames. I don't know if it was direct or not, but I would think that would drop someone. haha

Can someone still shoot them while on fire or something?

Yes you can, I know from doing it, heh. Saw some guy on fire but still running around and I shot and finished him off and got the kill.

Are you going to be playing later tonight? Would love to play with people who like objective modes and are positive about the game. My PSN is Hoodbury.

I like the small maps.

The controls dont feel good tho.

Picking something like destiny up. Thats godlike fps controls.

Anyways, time to jam some more mp in while its a free trial.

I really just don't get it.

And then cries of it being a reskin... Like, I love the Sci-Fi CoD but this doesn't play anything like that. In that sense it is a bit refreshing and the changes to the create-a-class, for better or worse, do change up how people make their loadouts. Not to mention a bunch of other little changes.

Then again, CoD usually changes quite a bit between iterations. While BO3 to IW may have not been as many changes, there is still changes that make playing one next to the other play different.

Also the size thing is something I've been seeing crop up ever since Battlefield got big on consoles. Somehow people think lower player sizes and smaller maps are somehow lazier and worse than large player counts and big maps.

TDM plays fine. Despite map size, it has a predictable flow, so if youre paying attention, you wont get constantly shot in the back like in the sci fi games
