Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

I'm only really playing out of sick curiosity at this point - how in God's name has ten years of progress beyond Call of Duty 4 lead to this thoroughly mediocre garbage?

There was a real opportunity to use WWII as a reset, to throw a lot of the franchise tropes out and provide a really gritty and impactful Call of Duty game, instead we've got yet another reskin. It's laughable that the time to kill feels lower, and the guns easier to use, in this game than they did in Call of Duty 4. It really sums up how superficial the World War aspect of this game is.

For the most part therefore it suffers from the same problems as all the other CoD games. The assault rifles are too versatile so it's hard to understand why you'd use the SMGs, LMGs, or snipers. The circular maps and spawning system conspire to ensure you never have any idea where your enemy is coming from, making practically unpreventable deaths from people behind you extremely common. Head glitching is still a thing. This game seems to feature far, far more people corner jumping and dolphin diving than even the CoD games that were based around movement and 'momentum'. There's just so little to like. I do kind of like the bipod concept with the LMGs, which I think is new, but that's really about it. The sound design seems really lacking, particularly in terms of how loud things are that are right next to you. The number of times an enemy is seemingly silent despite being a few feet away sprinting is ridiculous.

The War game mode is particularly disappointing. It's a good idea on paper and one I've been hoping to see fo ra long time. Yet the map design is simply appalling. It basically turns into a slugfest between the attackers who have to run and gun and the defenders who have to camp in windows. The bridge area is quite unbelievably bad, I can't believe anyone signed off on that. Who the hell thinks that it's a good idea to have an objective which requires you to be ompletely without cover, in a game where the time to kill is practically zero and spawning isn't even remotely delayed? The objectives feel befitting of a game like Overwatch, with tanks and shields, not Call of Duty. It's not like the other objectives are really interesting or play well, but fuck me the bridge is dumb.

Thanks, perfectly sums up my impression.

Just tried the beta. Man this game definitely feels like the old CODs before wallride and all that other stuff was implemented. I only played TDM and the maps were OK. There's a lot of entrances into rooms/areas but it's not so bad with how the game is slowed down. I don't understand how people can say the spawns are broken because if you actually understood how that gametype works then you will have a general feel of where they're coming from. People complaining about getting shot in the back need to stop fucking running into the middle of the map where all of the crossfire is coming from. If you like cod when it only had sprint then I think you'd like this game.

Something just feels off to me when playing it. So far I really haven't enjoyed it. It feels stiff no matter how much I put the sensitivity up.
Yeah for me too. The aim assist really bothers because when I'm trying to aim at somebody, the assist takes over and doesn't let me control it the way I want. I've never had a problem with this in a COD before.

Bingo. It feels exactly like COD before it was ruined by the jetpack nonsense. There things I feel need to be tweaked, but overall, it's what I wanted from this return to form.

I don't think this plays anything like sayyyy...Black Ops 2?...which is my all time favorite...

I haven't played BO2 since it was the current COD, so it's been too long for me comment on that, but it feels exactly like I remember a typical boots on the ground COD feeling. They just need to increase the sprint distance. Significantly.

To all you people shitting on the graphics: Most of the time Devs put in lower res textures and shit for betas to reduce the download size do more people play it.

Christ we go through this same shit every time there's a beta. You'd think people would remember this.

Part of the problem is to most people beta=demo...

They don't really understand that a beta test is literally to test game systems and such...

I have no problem with the sprint distance being longer or staying the same... I've said it before in this thread that I don't have a technical explanation for what I feel is wrong so far...something just doesn't feel crisp to me...maybe my opinion will change when I get to play hardcore modes which is my preference

Devs know we treat this as a demo. Its a preorder perk, so they should treat it as an audition, not as practice. That all said, i thought the graphics were nice and the sounds were good and punchy.

Its just the mindless spawn run kill die repeat loop, i guess im over it, cause i thought id like this purer COD, but i dont and thats probably just me aging out of this type of FPS. I like tactical slow stuff now, be it PUBg or even America's Army on console. So i guess COD stands no chance with ME now.

Is SnD in this one? I heard no but not sure. I could see that mode being cool in this COD.

Plays just like every other COD with boots on the ground. Netcode is just as iffy as ever. Host still seems to have a big advantage. With how much money COD makes, still can't believe this game doesn't have dedicated servers.

Still the biggest offender, since Ghost, why does every map have hundreds of branching paths. If you don't get killed half of the time from behind, you are damn good and/or damn lucky. The pathways don't make any sense. Seems like just random placements to get the require 3-5 ways. Just look at WW2 trench map.

As for the maps, at least the clutter seems to be way down. The maps so far seem much cleaner.

I like a lot the war mode. But i feel the defenders have a lot of advantage in the bridge. Are they using dedicated servers?Because i don't see any indicator of connection in the game.

Just got my first freeze. Sucks because I was in first place using shotgun lol. This definitely feels like the least polished CoD beta, and game in a while since Ghosts.

Like you all said something is off.

Guys, where can I find this beta on the Hong Kong store? What do I need to search for?

I tried searching for "Call of Duty" but it only found pre-orders for the game.

Game has some of the regular COD blunders, but I'm generally enjoying it quite a bit. Feels very focused like the old days. May actually pick this up!

Something I forgot about the last time I posted....

Does anyone else have trouble recognizing that you've killed someone sometimes? This was never an issue in other games, but in this game I feel like I need to shoot a time or two more (especially with a shotgun) because I wasn't sure if I killed them. Also seems like the last hit indicator doesn't make a sound or something.

Really enjoying it so far. Spawns are much better than they've been in past games. I've yet to spawn in and die within seconds, or spawn and turn the corner and see an enemy. I really missed the more stripped down setting of the older games.

I'm definitely back in this year.

Exact same problem i have in current gen cod games:

Maps are so small that players travel in twos or threes. So you kill one dude, and theres a guy up his bum and youre dead in the blink of an eye to the second guy because you dont have the time to take them both

The maps, as always, are the one thing that always seem to suck this gen. haven't played good maps since black ops 1, and even black ops 2, which had a design different from what we see this gen

These current maps would be great in 4v4 team tactical

Agree with the slow movement talk. Losing a lot of gunfights when I am the first to shoot as well. Overall not awful, but not something that makes me hopeful for the full game.

Will we ever get a CoD game with dedicated servers? Seems depressing that in this day and age we still haven't got something most games are dismissed for not having.

This game needs it too.

Played War again. Stopped them on defense, and we won all the way on attack. Smoke grenades are a must of course, but it's total horse shit even then to take the bridge. You get to say eat shit to k/d, and hope your team follows suit. Otherwise you lose.

The whole mode is actually fun and has you switching up play styles, but it is a poor man's Battlefield.

I don't know about day 1ing this one, but then again I have played all of the CoD's even if it is just for a few days so who am I kidding here?

Feels better to play than the IW, and war mode is great but so far nobody is working as a team. It's so frustrating. Got the Tank to 99% a couple of times and nobody was helping me, just staying back and doing stuff all.

Gave it another shot.

This is a hard pass. I can see cod players getting some kicks but this game feels lackluster in everyway.

Played this last night and it feels like a COD game. I guess I have been playing too much FPS on pc that my aim sucks now. Also, war is definitely the best mode out of the rest.

War is definitely the only somewhat fun mode for me. And even then, every time I played war, I just kept thinking that I would rather be playing overwatch. The whole push/pull just feels intensely more balanced and fun there. And in terms of gunplay, I'll stick to the Crucible in Destiny. That's been my main multiplayer shooter for the past 3 years for good reason. It feels much more fair to spot someone, still have a quick-ish TTK, but also have time to react, engage, disengage, outmaneuver, etc. Maybe my tastes have changed, but this fast TTK is just really itching me the wrong way. I can't even scope in my gun before I die.

Speaking of which, has the TTK always been this insanely fast? I honestly haven't played a lot since World at War, and COD4 before that. It's been many years, but I don't remember it being THIS fast. I prestiges a few times on both of those too.

One compliment - love the outfits, and female soldier option. Feels very cool! I want to like this game so bad but it's making it hard.

I've gone and played tonight exclusively with the airborne class and an SMG tonight...

SMGs MUST be nerfed for retail release... MUST

If anything, this game is slower than the previous COD games of the last few years.

I’m pretty sure the game does run on dedicated servers most of the time, but it’s very noticeable when it doesn’t. Random games here and there where it’s taking twice as long to kill and half as long to die. Not great for the ultra competitive.

Agreed with this. I also decided to do a few rounds using SMG only tonight and even the default is incredibly powerful. Hell, it’s near unstoppable with a silencer. I don’t think I went below 3:1KD during those games.

Bo3 still feels better, gun play wise

Something feels off about this, doesn't feel smooth. Kind of clunky and slow.

Other than boots on ground, I think it's a step back in terms of gun play

Looking to hopefully have a treyarch game next year with boots on ground

Maybe I'm crazy and was expecting them to do something a little bit more than just skin it but so far really does feel like a skin of current Call of Duty games.

Not Exactly bad but not what I'm looking for either. I thought with it being World War II it wasn't just going to be a run-and-gun style of game but kind of slowed down version that was going to require a little bit more strategy and tactical movements due to the technology of the time but it doesn't feel that way at all.

Oh well.

Can they really not look at COD4/MW2 to get an idea on how to design a Call of Duty map? Wtf is this 3 lane linear narrow lane garbage?

Advanced movement wasn't the issue imo it's the dog crap map design that only has 2 spawn areas for some reason keeps on returning vs a COD4 map like Pipeline that had multiple team spawns where the fight would play out. The 2 spawn area linear design is just so one dimensional

I thought health regen was going to be completely out, and we were going to have health packs? Or was there never the case?

Currently health restoration takes a significant chunk longer than any previous CoD title which is good. I was hoping we'd get more customization as well in this beta.

Oh, and is it a bug that Expedition class doesn't actually get to pick 1 tactical and lethal? When you hit level 2 it says you can pick both, but I can only pick one or the other.

As of right now I'm undecided, but I can say it's heaps better than IW. I hated IW beta and full game, but this I enjoy running around with the shotgun and lighting folks on fire.
