Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

Loving the beta so far. Feels a lot closer to CoD2 which I loved. Kinda fell off after many years of kill streaks though.

Anyone looking for beta people to play with? Looking for some people on mic but none of my friends are too into it/have played it.

PSN: Stat_09

EDIT: Didn't even realize the beta went down lol. I was having lots of fun with it too

- Reducing Molotov to x1 per Scorestreak.
- Incendiary Shells as default off, and perhaps need to be nerfed.

I'm out. This game design is insane to me. That this is what they address.

Yeah I'm not buying the dedicated servers thing. I'm seeing a lag pattern very similar to Black Ops 2. Whenever I was host in that game I had a HUGE lag disadvantage against the entire lobby, due to what I believe was overdone lag compensation to offset host advantage. Maybe it's something to do with my internet or network setup, but I can't fathom how that would be. It was really sad having an egregious, way too noticeable host disadvantage.

Anyway, I am getting similar results some games in WW2 where the entire lobby is godlike against me. These are games where guys finishing 3-15 get all 3 kills against me and appear to have insane reflexes. I'd say it happens maybe every one in four lobbies, but my only explanation for it is that these are games where I am hosting. "Dedicated servers" has to be mumbo jumbo where technically there is some truth to it but it's not what most would consider dedicated servers.

Edit: I guess it's hard to argue against dedicated servers after reading the Reddit posted a few pages back (https://www.reddit.com/r/WWII/comments/6vwlji/proof_the_wwii_private_multiplayer_beta_is/). I still don't understand why the connections feel the way they do at times. I've never experienced anything like this in any game with dedicated servers in my life. What the hell is the excuse for the games playing this inconsistently for so many people?

CoD has the worst servers out of any major shooter. 20 Hz tick rate while nearly every other major shooter is on 60. WW2 is supposed to be on 60 Hz servers, but that doesn't feel like the case. Heck, Destiny 2 beta felt more consistent, and that's entirely P2P.

Sledgehammer decided that the weapon balance wasn't close enough to WaW/the CoD community always gets real whiny about shotguns

You realize it's literally based on feedback they received, right? Why wouldn't they address it?

Why didn't they address SMGs in the same way? All they said was "Paratrooper strength / cost balancing." And then no mention of audio issues like the lack of footsteps.

I only ever saw a small handful of people complaining about the incendiary shells, and most of them had never actually tried using the shotguns for themselves. Incendiary shells are, in most lights, a downgrade from usual shotguns. What would be a one-shot kill in previous Call of Duty games is now a one shot damage and burn until killed, which still gives the victim time to kill the guy with the shotgun. And hell, if anyone tried using the Armored division, they might have seen that they get a reduction to fire damage. I suppose with these rebalances, they'll just be made completely impervious to incendiary shells.

This is always an issue with the community. They complain about tools they don't like while explicitly ignoring the built-in countermeasures for those tools, or at least analyzing the tools from a more objective standpoint. They get killed in a way they don't like and fail to consider how difficult it might have actually been for their killer to accomplish it, or what downsides there are to the weapon that killed them.

I thought the developers would be savvy enough to contextualize the circumstances under which the fans are complaining before making a decision, rather than simply folding to their requests. But between this and Advanced Warfare, I'm not convinced that Sledgehammer understands the fundamentals of how to balance a game. Instead they'll focus on trying to please small, whiny subsets of the community, forgetting the ramifications before they've suddenly got to please a new subset that they upset with the last change. It's like spinning plates. A developer needs confidence and strong reasoning, and the capability to present that reasoning in defense of a particular game balance choice.

I mean, look at this guy from the WWII Reddit that Sledgehammer is actively monitoring to gather feedback:

I am just a firm believer that shotguns that can be considered good weapons are a detriment to COD, especially ones that provide burn damage after the initial shot. Shotguns should be novelty weapons that you try to do well with, in spite of a disadvantage imo, not some super reliable power house. There's the argument that using a shot gun requires a lot of positioning skill, but I have to disagree, it requires camping a high traffic, close quarters area. Just not fun to have one enemy lock down an entire part of a map just because of his weapon.

That's the kind of guy who complains about the incendiary shells. He doesn't want good shotguns-- not 'OP', not 'top-tier'--he doesn't want any good shotguns in Call of Duty. That's not the kind of feedback you take without carefully considering the source.

You don't have to camp with a shotgun to be good with one. It is all about how you play the map and move. I use shotguns for fun all the time in every CoD after I've prestige my weapons and I do just as well with them. You just have to think differently.

I'm pretty sure WW2 is still using the pre-MW2 engine. Say what you will about Ghost, but at least it had an excellent connection.

They haven't even mentioned quick-scoping have they?

You should not be able to pick a sniper rifle then run around using it as a one-shot-kill rifle at close-to medium range by tapping ADS and firing.

Also if a game is going to have sniper rifles on maps like this then there needs to be a way to cover flanks.

It's just a mess. Playing a game like Siege and returning to COD, the flaws are like a sledgehammer to the face.

The wording that I saw implied they are looking into nerfing the incendiary shells based on data, but nothing definitive yet.

Sledgehammer was also pretty good with weapon balancing in AW, including shotguns. I remember when the S12 in AW was a shit tier shotgun around launch, but got a massive buff that made it one of the best if not the best shotgun in the game.

They really have to fix the point system in domination

Only 50 points per kill, and 150 when scoring

They already said they are upping the score in Dom for this coming weekend beta.

I don't even remember the last time when someone was quickscoping in public lobby in cod, it is very rare because it is ultimately very brittle strategy.

Shotguns have never been good again after the MW series. I remember playing big and small maps on MW2 and World at War and having the time of my life. Did I always win? Nope cause there's always someone more skilled than you out in the world.

I should never see a hit marker when 2-3 feet away with a Shotgun.

Yup, SPAS was god in MW2. Probably one of my favorite classes in all of the CODs. It was so satisfying.

Is this a beta thing or how come I can't see my full career stats? Is this going to be absent in the full game too? As more and more developers trying to hide stats and especially 'kill" stats in their games.

I was hoping that the movement and shooting would feel more like MWR, but it's basically just AW without jetpacks. Meh...

So it's an improvement over MWR.

Which is ironic cause I distinctly remember a few people saying it felt slower, with decreased sprint speed and distance.

I think this will be the first year I don't buy the $100 edition with the Season Pass for a couple reason: I feel like DLC maps hardly come up in regular playlists and Activision should really change the way they do there DLC and take a page from Gears and other games so the community is not divided plus they make plenty off Supply Drops so giving the maps for free should not be a big deal, charge for a zombie map if you want but not the others! And second I cant stand how long it seems to take for the DLC to come out for this game, especially DLC 4, they release it so close to the new COD that I have no interest!

I haven't played the beta yet but I have to get COD so I will pre order this week so I can try it out but I am strongly considering going with the regular version and passing on the maps this year.

Do they?

The original reason they gave was balancing issues as games just turn into a stream of score streaks, just like AW with the infinite system hack when you get battered, now this will be exactly the same.

I joined a game in progress of hard point and it's impossible to turn around when you are getting battered when a whole team leaves.

I don't want to buy the season pass either this year for the reasons you mention, you get penalised by it every year, along with the fact that the last few passes I've bought the content ends up being very mediocre, no more will you get my money without me knowing what the content is.

What might tempt me though is how they handle ranged weapons in the game, if it's like IW where you get the base gun with a season pass then that might force my hand.

You think DLC releases slow with these games? Geez, I wish you could see games like Battlefield 1, Star Wars Battlefront, and Titanfall 2. BF1 has received a grand total of 1 out of 4 planned map packs so far versus the 3 that would be out right now for CoD.

These DLCs are being developed super fast when compared to other games.

Battlefield's DLC plan seems so painful. But to be fair, the maps are so much bigger so its not really fair to compare. Especially since they need to balance 3 major game modes for a map.

Titanfall is also on a free map model, so beggars cant be choosers there

Sorry but being on Xbox especially it felt like it took forever for the first DLC to come out these last 2 years and they release the 4th DLC way to close to the new COD. Also tired of never seeing the maps I pay for show up so I will pass for now. If I love the game and the new maps/zombie maps are amazing maybe ill buy it later but at this point no thanks......Maps should be free like other games and just charge for Supply Drops and Zombie maps.

Well considering the DLC these days for MP consists of only like three small maps and a "re-imagined" map vs the huge arenas you ge tin BF1 I'll give dice a pass.

I'm just saying compared to DICE, CoD at least has a fairly consistent schedule. I feel like there were at least two map packs in BF4 and Hardline's life cycle around this same time. But I'm not going to backseat dev for DICE/Visceral or the CoD studios since I'm no dev and don't know how DLC schedules and pipelines work. Consistency would be nice though.

This is how it was also for PS3 and PC back in the day, things have reversed this gen. It's very frustrating I imagine for platforms that don't have the exclusivity. If map packs became free, I would be prepared to have it release at a slower schedule and not necessarily four at a time. In other words if they became free, I wouldn't expect the same schedule and number of maps to be released the way they are now with the paid model. Something else is going to give.

I'm not sure about the sprint speed and all that, but in terms of how the guns feel and the subtle movements of the character, it's janky like AW. IW's and Treyarch's games feel a lot smoother to play imo

Sorry if it has already been asked: any idea when beta keys for Xbox are being sent out? I registered my code a few months ago. I thought the preload started today.

I'm calling BS on that lol...in Black Ops 3 for instance I've NEVER seen myself, or most of my friends "final kill" cam look like that...however, we have a friend that is in the Marines and stationed in Japan...always rocking a solid yellow ping when he plays with us...

If HE gets the final kill cam...that's exactly what you see...Even he sees it, but not like that during gameplay...if that's how your kill cam look, you might want to check your connection...
There has never been a COD game that has ever given an accurate viewpoint of your death. Black Ops 3 isn't any different.

the kill cam has never been accurate

Played a ton of TDMs over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed. Can't wait for week 2 of beta!

-Gunplay, the way you move, ADS, sprint is somewhere between World at War and Black Ops 2, so that's a good thing.
-Connections were surprisingly good considering all past COD games used to lag as hell despite faster internet speeds.
-Weird audio cue in every match that I played, it sounds like when a claymore(from COD4) gets activated before detonation. This kept happening in every match in TDM, not sure why.
-The plane control movements were so hard and heavy in the kill streak and since it's there only for a short period of time, it got a little frustrating trying to figure it out.

Been a diehard COD MP player since MW2(all 10 prestiges) MW3 (11-12 prestiges completed) Black Ops (all 15 prestiges and all golden guns unlocked except for sniper rifles)

I was hearing this too, or at least something similar. Turns out it was the clip popping on the M1. Not sure if that was what you are hearing too? It was pretty crazy how far away you'd be from the player using the gun and still hear their clip pop out. Actually a pretty great sound, just a bit loud.

They even encourage jump shooters by including the bumper jumper control scheme? Good job shg.

Yeah, I was happy for a second to see the inclusion of bumper jumper, then I remembered it will make that issue even worse.

Got damn I hate jump shooters and dropshotters. I know its an effective play style. I just think it looks stupid to see everyone bunny hopping around in a "realistic" war shooter. At least it made sense when we had jump packs.

Increasing the TDM limit was something I thought to myself while playing. Glad to see I wasn't alone!

I think 100 is too long. I've had plenty of good games where it was neck and neck until 75, but there are also plenty of lopsided games that many people will not sit through until the other team gets 100. It just makes blowouts even less fun for both sides with one side having to slog through it, and the winning side getting frustrated when everyone from the other team is quitting. I also feel like part of the fun of TDM is how quick the matches are.

*shrug*

Maybe I'm just not used to 100 at all since I haven't really played CoD much since Black Ops 2.

Whaaat? Is that it? Will try to check once again in weekend 2 of the beta this Friday. Love the sound effects in general, from the guns, to the explosions and the rubble/dust that falls over. Sledgehammer folks are definitely onto bringing COD back to it's roots.

They are fixing domination

Thank God

100 points per kill

You mean breaking right? Again, it's going to be constant rolling of high end scorstreaks, God forbid playing against a team of people, will be rage quit after rage quit and getting put in those lobbies mid game.

I mean it's fun to dish that out, but being on the receiving end, nope.

No, I mean fixing.

On kills alone, to get a recon plane, just a UAV requires 10 kills, going by 50 points. That's ridiculous. It should be 100.

If it is were up to me, capturing a flag should be 200, but it seems they are keeping it 150.

Also, streaks are fun.

Is it possible to shoot uavs down on this game?

Capturing a flag should give you 300 points and kills should be 75. Push people into going for captures then.
