Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

I'm not sure what people are talking about when they say this game has a low time to kill. After playing a couple of hours of both the beta and MW:R today I can tell you that the time to kill in the beta is about 3 times higher than in the old Modern Warfare games.

I agree with a lot of the other criticisms that people are mentioning here though. Their is something seriously wrong with the netcode for this game. In the 50 or so matches I've played in this beta around 10 had some serious connectivity issues. Today I checked my ports settings, and played games of Overwatch, Titanfall 2 and MW:R to make sure it was not on my end, and those games played fine.

I'm also having more of an issue with these maps the longer I play them. There just isn't a lot of "play" to them, given how small and circular they are in nature. The only way to not have to worry about getting shot in the back is still stick to the outer perimeter and basically do laps around the smaller maps. The engagements that happen in the center of these maps are just never that interesting because the lanes are so constricted.

There are things that I like about this game - I've talked about those things before in this thread, but the issues I've mentioned are serious flaws that could drive me away from this game.

I honestly feel I am pretty much done with the series.
I feel like they need to do something vastly different to make it interesting to me. Stripping out all the stuff from the past few years isn't the answer.
I would be more interested if they just made a stand alone COD zombies game. Expanded it out, put a loaf of interesting ideas in. At least it would be different.

I think it's kind of got to the point where they need to start looking at fundamentals. There are core of mechanics that all three of the developers seem unwilling to mess with, presumably because they think they are critical to what Call of Duty is, but I think we're kind of seeing the limits of how much Call of Duty can change if they're only really playing around with the class and killstreak mechanics which, practically, is all the developers have done since CoD4.

Gun play, radar mechanics, cookable insta kill grenades, circular maps, spawns designed to minimise your time to next fight... none of these things should be sacred going forward.

When they were going back to WWII, I didn't think they would just make ANOTHER Call of Duty again.

At the very least, I expected a mode like Halo 5's Warzone. A goofy unbalanced mode that people can have Battlefieldish fun in.

Edit: I have to say, I don't get the complaints about the low TTK. The TTK for Call of Duty has been low for an entire decade at this point. You never actually get into gun battles in a Call of Duty game.

They do have that, it's called War Mode and it's probably the best thing they did with this game. It has it's own problems, but at least they were going with something new for the series. I hope they really lean into it with the release and DLC's.

It doesn't seem that new to me. It's a new gamemode for a Call of Duty game. It's definitely not on the same level of goofy fun like Battlefield or Warzone.

Usually going against the gaf grain is the correct choice anyway. I wouldn't take the negativity of the game seriously on here too much. It was the same complaints being said back in the day for the older games .
Ya, all of the post-MW games people are using as examples of "when CoD was good" (BO1/2 and MW2) were getting the same criticisms in their hey-day about map design, connectivity issues, gunplay, balance, etc. Hell, I even saw people pining for Ghosts last year in the IW beta thread.

Thankfully, I learned not to use GAF as a barometer for how good/bad CoD is in a given year.

I mean, I'm not Gaf. I'm me. Does my opinion become invalid because I posted it on Gaf?

I've definitely come around on this game over the weekend. There are issues here which are hard to ignore, but I think I'm going to miss being able to fire this up for a few rounds once the beta finishes.

Ultimately I think the biggest issue with this beta is Pointe Du Hoc. It feels like the biggest example of how limiting and wasted this setting is in a Call of Duty game- especially compared to how the competition portray the scale of warfare nowadays - as well as being a total shitshow from a design and gameplay perspective. It feels like everything this game gets wrong rolled up into one easy to hate map.

I've had some really enjoyable matches on Ardennes Forest and Gibraltar though, so I remain cautiously hopeful the full range of maps is better.

Keeping my pre-order. Pinning all my hopes of a worthy WW2 experience on the campaign, but ive seen enough from this beta to think ill give the multiplayer a go too for a while.

So I played about about three hours and I love it!
I didint think I missed traditional call of duty this much but this beta really clicked with me.

the last beta for infinite warfare stopped me from buying the game this beta has convinced me to at least give this game a chance

This is pretty consistent with a franchise that has been going downhill steadily for the past decade. When MW2 came out I was distraught at how bad it was, yet, compared to what we've had recently it's an absolute masterpiece.

I preordered it cause of the hype on twitter from a bunch of people like Nadeshot, then i saw it in action and i was like, meh. Cancelled my preorder. COD just isnt for me anymore.

My biggest issue with the networking and ttk is that it always feels like it takes me ages to kill people, but I die instantly.

I'm sure it feels this way to the people -I- kill as well, but it's just overall shitty feeling.

Yeah, that's the thing with CoD, connections seem to be all over the place at times. There are games where it's pretty obvious I'm getting destroyed not because of playing better people, but because my connection is slightly behind or something. It can be insanely frustrating.

What's the point of the forced Top Players screen where you can't back out or do anything at all?

It's been a thing since Black Ops 3 (though that and IW implemented it much more smoothly than WWII). It's just to show off what your character looks like (if you did well), and do some gestures. That's where the Black Ops 3 dab influenza occurred.

Considering you see an image of the entire lobby with everyone's name's over their soldier while matchmaking, I'm not sure why they also included the top 3 thing. Just make everyone outside the top 3 a silhouette for the first few seconds and then fade everyone in or something.

It's a reward for doing well. The other players have to watch while your soldier waves their arms around like a doofus.

Oh I'm quite familiar with it from Black Ops 3. As long as I don't have to hear those shitty voicelines and watch dumb dances after each match it's already an improvement.

Just to add my tiny opinion to the thread, easy pass on this one. MW Remake is better, BO3 is better, hell even BO2 on back-compat is better than this. Yes I know it's a beta, but there's enough to go on. It's regressive, boring, doesn't feel good, feels like a step back into the past (literally). It's an ugly thing, too...not because of the subject, the colours just don't look right, the saturation is wrong, it's world war COD by numbers.

I honestly think this only exists as a one-time "we told you so" for fans, so they can say they did another WW game, they used their low-tier studio to do it, so we can all go mad for Black Ops 4 next year....which should be great.

BO2 on back cat is better than most games

I will say this beta has some of the best grenade explosion effects I've seen in any game. Take a look at Infinite Warfare and see/hear how incredibly shitty they are in comparison.

I was looking forward to this game coming out and getting away from the jetpacks.. feels good, but something was off with the beta and I just never ended up having any fun.

sadly I will pass on this one.

I should say I am maybe getting too old (36) as my reflexes are slowing down and I was getting destroyed :D

Yea not digging it very much after a couple of hours, maps are very small and have a lot of dumb pathways or not enough in some areas. The guns I've tried don't feel very special and unique from one another, and there's barely any selection of guns but that may be just for the beta.

The menus are kind of a clusterfuck, and confusing. Not sure if the HQ is in the beta because I can't figure out how to get to it. Comparing these few maps to the last WW2 CoD game (WaW) and these get destroyed by them. I didn't have much faith in SHG to begin with after AW and helping with MW3, so I'm not let down or anything just disappointed. Will probably be skipping this, as SWBF2 comes out right after it and I'll have D2 as well. Maybe get it when it's on sale or has good reviews.

Yea I definitely looked at this as a "you got your boots on the ground? oh wait you still aren't happy imagine that huh" type of game from Activision.

Maybe one more grounded game and then were getting jetpacks again most likely or more futuristic shit.

It's good. I didnt latch onto MW remake, and i worried this would be the same. I was pretty sure I was going to prefer future style.

With the future ones, i only play TDM and the skills and perks keep it fresh. Here, the game modes might end up being the draw instead. I can't see the perks and skills getting too crazy.

It's not as frustrating as previous entries. I can feel myself getting kills due to using better strats, playing it safe, or out thinking opponents. I think the maps allow the all the weapons to be viable. I was really worried that up close fights would be gone due to the weapon set. They aren't. I was never one to switch to a pistol over a reload or carry a shotgun in case i got into close quarters, but here it works.

This post is pretty disingenuous. This is a end of the game killcam, and not at all accurate to actual gameplay.

You can prove this to yourself. Even if you are the one that gets the 'play of the game' it will look just like this when being played back. You know exactly what was on your screen when playing, but regardless it looks like this in the killcam.

I hated it, maps felt too small, and I am sick to death of wasting time playing MP games with horrible matchmaking. This an old dog, I'm almost 41 now and I'm sorry but I don't have the time the kids from the broken homes with 8+ hours a day to spend Super scoping and knowing every nook and cranny of a map. I did that stuff back in my quake glory days but now I just wanna play with people at my own skill level. I mean it's almost like NBA players vs pick up game at the YMCA. I'd love to play, but it's just too damn frustrating spawning and dying, rinse and repeat.

Is it that hard to rank players based on their skill? Or rank? So ridiculous to waste 60 bucks on something that in the end will only cause me frustration. I'll stick to rocket leauge and overwatch thanks. Not the best at those either....at least with those games I have some fun.

I feel like COD didn't evolve and it's starting to show its age just like me. 😫 Nothing fresh about this game at all. Just an old coat of paint on a tried and true chasssis.

Maps are a huge issue. I like Ardennes but have significant issues with the other 2 maps. Gibraltar looked nice in the early gameplay, but there's something really boring about playing that map. Pointe du Hoc might be my least favorite map between BO3/IW/WW2. I feel like I'm always getting shot in the back, and I still have difficulty reading flow and spawns on that map.

Not sure why people are paying for Beta codes. I have a simple way:

  1. Preorder the game on console (Xbox in my case)
  2. Play beta on the weekend its released.
  3. Cancel preorder through Microsoft.

I was iffy on this at first but I'm digging it now. Loving hardpoint in this iteration and loving the theme and general violence that is constantly in your face.

Tone down the smg's a little, quickscoping and decrease the accuracy when jumping and i'm sold!

Walking out of this weekend I think the biggest highlight I have is the War gamemode has huge potential. That whole bridge section isn't exactly great tbh and hopefully other maps have a little bit more then that. It is something I wanted to see in CoD for years so hopefully they expand on it.

Part of me also wonders if they should start doing more respawn time game modes or add them to more objectives. The problem with the series over the years has been nobody gives a real shit about dying or messing up because there is no real punishment other then your ratio. Just from playing OW for the past year and being a big CoD guy since COD2 I think there really is something mental about sitting out of the fight for 3-6 extra seconds or whatever and knowing you have to sit out and just watch. Obviously TDM will still be the same but they really should experiment with having respawn delays.

I've never sucked at a CoD this much. I feel like I say that every year, but this is just, wow. I'm liking the game for the most part but coming in last on my team virtually every match is already getting old. I'm hoping that it's just due to the fact that the beta population is mostly tryhards and that there will be more crummy people like me playing when the full game is out.

Also I have my freaking stick sensitivity set to half that of what I normally do in CoD and the controls still don't feel right.

Am I the only one that thinks the logical step for both BF and CoD style games is leaving behind private/quick matches and going more toward a persistent online style game where you have objectives and things that you focus on along with fighting the enemy and moving the front line, etc?

There really hasn't been a game that tired this aside from WWIIonline and that was ages ago, when computers (and definitely consoles) couldn't handle it that well.

MAG....it was glorious (yet still flawed, imagine that knowledge applied to a sequel. Sony didn't want to re-invest).

I tried one more time but i just cant. I can only be one shotted by bunny hopping motherfuckers or shot in the back so many times before I just give up. And the latency...good lord. BF, siege, killzone. They dont have this proplem. Im so mad right now. After waiting 9 years for another big console ww2 game. This is it.

I'm not too fond of the maps so far but they might grow on me, and for some reason it feels slower than past Call of Duty games. I had hoped it would have gotten me back to the Call of Duty 2 days but it doesn't feel like this game at all sadly. I will be buying it on 50% sale on Steam come next year, cause I need to own all of them Call of Duty games; I love them for what they are.

I'm calling BS on that lol...in Black Ops 3 for instance I've NEVER seen myself, or most of my friends "final kill" cam look like that...however, we have a friend that is in the Marines and stationed in Japan...always rocking a solid yellow ping when he plays with us...

If HE gets the final kill cam...that's exactly what you see...Even he sees it, but not like that during gameplay...if that's how your kill cam look, you might want to check your connection...

Kill cams were always off. Doesn't matter what connection you had.
Theater mode replays were off too.
