Can we talk about 120fps for next gen?!

I'm looking to buy a new TV for when I finally get my hands on next gen consoles. Thing is, if you want to get a "true next gen ready" TV (120hz, HDMI 2.1) you're looking at a pretty significant price bump.

My issue is this...while I think a bunch of cross gen games will receive 120fps patches, and a few indie games as well over the next 7 years, I don't think 120fps will be very common going forward, even for multiplayer games.

If that's the case, why is there such a market for 120hz TVs with HDMI 2.1? Isn't it largely a waste? Am I missing something?

Am I missing something?
You`re missing, that TVs can just as well be hooked up to PCs and fast panels and the resulting picture clarity aren`t only a plus for games.
Also, HDMI2.1 isn`t only about bandwith, but also features like VRR, eARC etc.

HDMI 2.1 is more valuable for the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature. That will become invaluable when you're playing games that can't quite reach whatever target they're hitting, which happens quite a bit.

Number one rule of tv purchases, buy the tv based on picture quality and size first. Those should be number one priority.

Don't focus on 120 fps games. I'd rather say buy a fast monitor.

I know dirt5 and some other games will probably hit 120 fps, but this gen was in the beginning all about 60 fps. See how that went.

I'd say wait to buy a new TV until lots of games has been released so you have an idea of what the common fps is.

Screenshots always sell games, so expect that devs will still focus on that.

at 120fps on consoles there will always be sacrifices to image quality - the few games that do manage 4k and beyond at 120fps wont in fact be living up to visual standards graphically - and remember 120fps really means the game wont ever drop below 60 fps, but for graphically intense games - drops below 120fps (down to 83fps) can occur as has been proved on countless PC hardware setups.

120FPS is preferred for Online First Person Shooters and Online Racing Variants/Multiplayer Gaming - not a necessity outside of strictly competitive modes - unless of course you want a game to in fact have both the best graphics of the generation while somehow also maintaining 120fps solid at 4k and 8k (remember these consoles both tout they are capable of 8k) - and outside of visual let downs, solid graphically uncompromising 4k 120fps will probably not happen this gen on console in all honesty.

120fps will be the 4K to the Pro/One X on this gen. Some games work, a lot of them don't.

You can clearly see some multiplayer games with 120fps, while singleplayer are 60. I'm happy with this "new standard". But don't get your hopes too high. Chances are that mostly third parties will continue with 30fps

It's something we can only predict when we talk about 120FPS adoption rate in games (that will grow over time but largely be determined by what displays people use).

But what we can say for certain is that when people start jumping from 120fps to 30fps they're in for a shock.

If you are just using your TV for console gaming, I think its pretty safe to assume that 4k 120FPS will be very rare for most games. The new Nvidia/AMD GPU's will still struggle to meet this standard, if they can even meet it all, and I don't think its going to be a consistent thing with games out NOW until the next line of GPU's come out. Games will be even more demanding in the years to come, meaning its going to take a lot more horsepower to just sustain 4k60.

So that being said, unless you are trying to future proof for the next generation of consoles AFTER this PS5/XSX, I would just stick with a high-quality HDMI 2.0 TV.

A 120fps mode, which could mean settings being toned down until that framerate is reached, or dynamic resolutions...
Wait until the games get released dudes.

120 Hz Tvs are a thing since forever because 120 Hz is divisible by 24 Hz and most movies are recorded with 24 Hz. HDMI 2.1 is just the progression of tech because its adding VRR and many more things.
