On one hand, I don't understand all the hand wringing going on over at era.... on the other hand, some of the guys here take it too seriously the other way by saying they support the game just out of spite lol. Just a game yall
I was planing to buy Catherine Full Body from beginning. My fear is the game might get censored over this BS, so yes I’m sad and worried about this.

It's tough stuff to prove though. Libel, thankfully and rightly so, is not easily established.
Doxxing should be an easy one.

Not sure if you're in the UK, but the Lord McAlpine case was a watershed moment in terms of Twitter and what can be tried in a court of law. I think there's still a general feeling that Twitter operates at two levels. The sort of nonsense gossip of small accounts, versus the celebrity accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. There are different standards at work. It also appears to be the case that the test will be updated; you mustn't just prove harm, rather *substantial harm*.
Not from the UK but we are neighbors with a sea inbetween :)

Which leads is back to Vavra. I sincerely believe that their months long campaign of slander crossed the divide from opinion to legitimate libel. And their platform is big enough to have to defend that.

Probably why they shut up about it.
All that negativity surely helped prevent the game he made from being a success. Oh no, it actually was a great success with millions sold.

That alone tells me that all that negativity has zero effect, other than its personal slander and character assasination.

People should take some solace in that other forum largely acting as a containment zone for its particular brand of progressive insanity. Concern should arise, if we spend the next several months with some of the big video game media outlets posting stories about the game's supposed hateful or inappropriate content towards LGBT individuals, especially should such articles produce an actual response from ATLUS USA, as they're notoriously reticent.

Overall, I see this as a situation worth watching, but not one to worry about, at this point.

Myself as well. Another of my fears is that they might decide to not bother with localizing games like this anymore, or that it might influence others devs or publishers to not explore stories or topics deemed "problematic" (god I loathe all these pc buzzwords). Now we gotta fight, for our right, to paaaaaaaaarty! LoL j/k.

I wish Atlus and their teams all the best in this. Wish I could play the game now though. I might do a playthrough on a last-gen system for kicks and to show my girl.

I've been playing Persona 5 recently and after browsing ERA I was surprised to discover that the homosexuals in it are portrayed as dangerous sex predators. It surprised me because I thought the running joke with the gay guys was quite funny. I didn't see anything offensive about it and I definitely didn't get the impression they were dangerous pedophiles. Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe I need to put on 300 pounds and get some blue hair dye in order to understand the difference between a dumb joke and a hate parade

It's really pathetic and crazy irritating. There's a STAFF WARNING at the game's OT stating that yes there are some troubling content within the game and that yes said content will get debated and if you condone the material or don't trash it ("dismiss relevant criticism" is the actual phrase, holy shit) every time someone brings it up, you're getting banned.

This is not an internet board, this is a cult.
It's so hilariously surreal that we live in an age where there's a web forum that will ban you for a difference of opinion no matter how respectfully you share it.

In the 2000s every forum across the web was rife was endless debates over any issue, the only rule was that people did so in a respectful manner, not that there was only "one" way to think because what then is even the point of a "forum"?

Maybe these types of gamers are living up to the "manbabies" and "childish" terms we always heard? Just look at the way they act and respond. Throwing their toys out the pram every time. Everything is exaggerated.
I compare them to fundamentalist Muslims, but bratty 5 years old throwing a temper tantrum is another apt comparison.

I hope that Atlus stays the course and release Catherine: Full Body in the west untouched. Ignore the inevitable hit pieces from Polygon, Kotaku, etc. as the actual audience will simply buy and enjoy the game. This may set a precedent and be a huge wake-up call to rest of the industry that you do not need to cater/cowtow to the far left minority in order to release a successful product.

Like...people who have only heard a vague outline and no footage screaming that the entire company is trash

On a video game board no less. This is the part that kills me. People are quick to do this against a video game developer on a video game board. It's so unreal and I really wish they would just drop the pretense and just go full political.

i just find it weird people super sensitive to this stuff would be into japanese or "anime games" to begin with. if principle really is the end-all be-all here

and i'm not even arguing for Atlus or this kind of content, perhaps it is wrong. it's above my paygrade to say one way or the other. but japan has been on the other page culturally for some time now

It says it right there in the term "vocal minority": you need to be vocal to pretend your opinion represents the majority of people convincing gullible developers to change things the way you want, even if there's nothing to be changed to begin with. Even if Atlus is in the clear in this situation, it doesn't hurt to con them into pushing an agenda later in another game.
They already started doing this with Dragon Quest, and watch when the next Zelda game is announced.

Whoever said they were? They're not, their point is that if you completely change it into something they like, they might enjoy it. Screw those that like it the way it is.

i dunno, seems like there's a difference with something like say Kingdom Come where it takes a broad PR snafu to bring them out from under their boulders. maybe overgeneralizing/going too anecdotal but they usually have anime avatars or can recount every single 'offending' element in persona 4 or whatever, i take it they actually play this stuff

not that there isn't a rabid case of 'every game out there needs to 100% align with my worldview' either.

Sorry but I'm not going to disrespect a billion plus people comparing them to a bunch of lunatics on a forum with the mindset of 5 years olds.
I have very carefully used the word "fundamentalist" when describing these Muslims, to make it clear I'm not talking about all Muslims.

The fundamentalist Christians of the 1980s like Jerry Falwell are also another good comparison, they were always outraged over media and trying to censor what they didn't like and didn't agree with.

They don't even bother to get shit right about it either, there's not even any attempt to understand the work they're criticizing. Persona 4 was released over 10 years ago and a surprisingly huge amount of them still believe Kanji was meant to be gay. They're either legally stupid or uninformed and therefore dishonest by engaging in a discussion about something they know dick about. Or both.

Wait a minute, Kanji wasn't gay? I haven't played P4 but I was always under the impression he was, I used to know a guy online who always talked about it in fact.

His entire point of his arc was his likes cute things that other people find feminine even tho Kanji straight male. In P4’s TV world it’s made of other people’s conscious and how they view the world and Kanji’s Shadow it’s his emotions going out of control, this why each party’s shadow act in exaggerated way.

No he wasn't. Maybe you could say he was bissexual, but that wasn't the point of his character. I'm putting this into spoilers because this game is such a masterpiece and you should enjoy it for youself, but if you don't mind reading then:

Kanji didn't have stereotypically masculine interests and therefore was insecure about himself and he was harassed by women for those interests and mistrusted them for that. Then he overcorrected by acting like a punk. Kanji was about the consequences of not fitting into the role your gender puts you in and the ensuing confusion of wanting to be someone else.

Listening to people online about Persona 4 can be dangerous. There's a character that certain pockets of the internet refuse to accept isnt transgender and they wont stop bitching about it.

era is barely 5000 active users. if you do a change based on that number, you're fucking insane
I used to think the same, but these people actually got someone from Subnautica fired because of some tweets.

the thread asking if people are still gonna buy atlus games gives me a good chuckle. some people are actually surprised that trans issues aren't a priority for most people at all
I saw this thread, the vast majority voted in the poll that they will keep buying Atlus game, Catherine included.

Yet in the comments i browsed real quick and very few people said they will still buy Catherine after this.

This is telling, the majority of the members of the site are actually afraid of getting banned for saying their opnion about the game i think, otherwise the comment sections would not be so one sided against the game.

Remember the incident of a Dude using girl account to join a pro team as an experiment

The fps community: hmmm... Suspicious based on the rank record
Gaf: Yeah suspicious indeed, there's no way high-rank player like that wasn't on people radar
Era : Sexist bigot bigfoot and etc just because she's a girl people are doubting her abilities
Fake gamer girl : I have a dick LOL

First, its not about the numbers they have, its about who posts in that forum. they have game journalists, localizers, developers and many people working in the gaming industry.

http://resetera.kiwifarms.net/verified

Second, they are very coordinated and when they agree to do something they do it together, within minutes of the creation of the thread talking about shaming and harassing the Persona 5 director i saw more than 20 people on Twitter demanding Atlus to fire him.

We can sit here all day laughing at them but that will be pointless, we should email and write to Atlus on social media to tell them that those people are not the majority of gamers but a few toxic unhinged individuals.

I still remember how gamers made Nintendo stop censoring their games when they united together and started Operation Torrential Downpour, and they were successful because they used the same tactic Era members are using now.

Had this been a discussion about The Last Jedi, it's participants would have been called man babies

Oh how "progressive" those sexist executives, etc., were since I have several good friends that are die-hard Star Wars fans that are female and were just as disappointed.

One would never even text me back after I asked what she thought after opening night. I didn't hear from her until months later and she never brought it up and said, "You want to go see Solo?"

She was that disappointed she didn't want to talk about it. Such a man baby.

As of writing this, NeoGAF has 216 members online while ResetEra has 3,543. Reset also has the ears of some of the more popular, though less reputable gaming journalists, where a lot of the worst articles on Kotaku and Polygon are ripped straight from that den of crazy.

Like it or not, ResetEra is not something that I think we can ignore, much less should ignore, if we want reasonable minds to be the stewards of our hobby rather than the mentally ill. As much as I'm against call out culture, I think calling them out for their bullshit, often and loudly, is the most peaceful and effective way of containing their bullshit.
Yep, it’s at the same time a GAF sanity check.

There are many people on ERA who are good contributors in ERA's gaming forums and at the same don't care about politics. Just because ERA is highly political doesn't mean all people over there always post non-sense. But it really can be a pain in the ass to read, whenever something gets political over there, even in the gaming forums. I think it's a pity, that just like in real life the current politcal climate does indeed breed separation and hate mostly by the left. I'm all in to call out intolerance and racism, but times have changed and nowadays the left became the provider for bigotry and supression of freedom of speech and thought.

Even so, they'd better be careful on how to present each and every game character and action so as not to offend anyone. Forum began to reach that state few months after its creation

Era is only busy as 1/ endless supply of dumb sjws and 2/ anyone with a brain there avoids politics entirely.

Its a haven of young, dumb socialists with low income. Once you earn some money you realise you dont feel like supporting a 70% tax rate, wasting time arguing with internet babies, and fighting for causes that make no actual sense (biology is a choice etc), you leave your old awful persona behind.

Like someone said before me, era neatly contains all the brainless militants in one handily avoidable place, except when you want to laugh at them.

Hey GAF, local resident trans person here with my two cents. Erica seems like very good representation from what I know of the original, and I remember the Rin fiasco from the Full Body announce trailer, and how they assumed she was trans based on scarce info.

Just wanted to let you know, no you don't have to sleep with me and also you don't have to agree with me on things, and if I find something legit transphobic (and trust me, my standards are much higher than ERA because I'm not a baby looking to be offended and misinterperate everything) I'll try to explain why instead of chomping at the bit to ruin your life.

Because life ruination smear campaigns aren't okay, and ERA is basically a faux-progressive version of Stormfront at this point. It's full of fake news, racism and just general hatred.

Now for some quotes, to further discussion.
Where was ERA when Hatred and Agony came out?
Buddy all those people were here back in those days.

You should probably stop giving their outrage campaigns any kind of relevancy and spotlight.
I don't see the point of this, as others have stated. But for a different reason. I find their shitstorms amusing. And it's not like they'd stop doing them if nobody spoke of it. If anything they'd be more resolute in their harassment campaigns because they think they could get away with doing it.

Ignore Era, and release the game on Vita instead.
This, I don't have a PS4 but I want to get this game. Always have since it was announced.

I actually made an account on Resetera but ended up just not going there much because they seem to have a culture of racism towards Japan and Japanese stuff in general which made me very uncomfortable. Americentrism is of course omniprevalent on English-speaking parts of the internet but I couldn't help but feel that the racist undertones seem way worse there.

Well, that was fun. They did a poll on Era about it and even there the majority does not care or wants to boycott Atlus.

So, womp womp guess.
you just need to stay quiet, so you won't be banned. bunch of fascists

I stumbled upon this in Dualshockers' article about this 'controversy'. The mod that posted this image in the comments section hit the nail in the head in regards to ResetERA:
This apply to me as well after reading all this useless drama. I'll double dip this shit: digital to play and premium for collection.

Even that spoiler has issues or fake spoilers.....well trash...it's a trash

this is not a good forum to hangout....

So, womp womp I guess.
Ofcourse they don't. I remember another poll for another supposed controversial game and it got locked with the majority being not to do anything against it because a game should be judged on its quality. I wish i still had post somewhere.

When i saw that i knew The Names are just artificially trying to push the discussion in a certain direction. Even when that means the majority of voted people does not care (Nor will it affect sales)

Poll results, by the way:

Only 6.6% (out of 2000+ votes) would never buy another Atlus title again. Other percentages wouldn't buy in specific situations (like Hashino games for example, at 12.6%. Or not just buying Catherine itself at 22%). 56% will continue to purchase without issue.

So basically the majority has no issues with this (58.3% would buy the game) and exactly 400 people (Or 19.2% of the vote) wouldn't buy either another Atlus game or a game with Hashino. And these are the most relevant numbers since those are directly related to the question. The other results are more generic reasons not related to the controversy (Except the bottom one, ofcourse) 400 people.

Out of 2089 people.

Its concerning that almost 20% breaks off a purchase like this, but almost 60% would purchase. All in all, this pull ERA thinks it has is effectively rather meaningless.

Besides that, who of the 19.2% is actually going to uphold their promise? You can't really verify this as a forum so its easy to claim you won't buy another Atlus or Hashino game and then buy it silently anyways.

Indirectly, with this post i am contributing to transgender awareness so ERA should be proud, right? :)

I don't think it's all that concerning that just under 20% of ERA users are swearing off Catherine or Atlus/Hoshino's games. This is not a "In a vacuum" poll. This is a poll made in a left extremist forum whose mod team bans dissenters left and right. The fact that the majority of users will still purchase Atlus games in spite of The Names and the mods' best efforts to create an echo chamber is rather damning.

I mean, its easy to claim you won't buy Atlus/Hoshino games anymore because of this and then still buy them anyways and just not tell ERA about it anywhere on the forum. Because you know a little helper will dig through your posts to point it out if you do.

Thus, the poll instantly becomes less valueable since ERA thankfully can't track you IRL yet to that level.

The fact that the majority of users will still purchase Atlus games in spite of The Names and the mods' best efforts to create an echo chamber is rather damning.
I view it as one of the few, if only way to actively show to be against the party narrative without getting banned. Its already been proven that simply vocalizing a difference in narrative is enough to cop one.

It would be worse if ERA would ban the 56% since XenForo can show who voted what.... but i am sure those users are atleast marked for ''History of accumulated infractions'' by this poll now.

Sad thing is that something so otherworldy as that theory is actually very much possible there.
