Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol (DS) Thread of Awkward Wal-Mart Exclusivity

Hey jiji, NCSX cancelled my order :P
what the hell#%#(%#

That's what I get for sending sales their way. Product page says it's sold out now:

Did anybody here order it successfully?

For the new Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol game for Nintendo DS, Nintendo partnered with Wal-Mart because of Wal-Mart’s strong environmental program and social giving campaign.
:lol:lol:lol

I remember Chris Remo or something was asking if there were any absurd PRs in the last week, for some article he was thinking about doing. This one works!

Got the game today, put about an hour into it. If my avatar is any indication, Chibi Robo was one of my favorite Gamecube games.

Impressions:

- Graphics are pleasing, honestly. DS does bad 3d, but they're colorful and there's no slowdown or anything. And somehow they got the scale right, which is the most important thing. Walking around the monstrous, booming steps of a human person makes you feel appropriately tiny.
- Start of the game is tedious and boring, but it picks up a little while in once you can walk more than ten steps without falling over. Kind of like the Cube game but a little worse, since you initially only have one place to recharge.
- I'm glad to see the toys are back. The characters were my favorite part of the Gamecube game. I'm not sure if this means subplots are back, too, or what. Some of the things I've seen suggest they are.
- Bicycle is cool. Dancing Chibi is adorable. Touchscreen controls are fun in their own little way.
- Night / day system seems to be gone :(
- The game concept is good and fits Chibi Robo very well
- Fuck Nintendo for sending this to die
- It still has that subtle depressing atmosphere, like with the flower shopkeep and the forlorn french puppet who wants his freedom

Awesome. Thank you my friend for actually posting some goddamn impressions. I'm picking this up today (my shitty walmart didn't have it yet). Please, keep them coming.

Awesome, thanks for the impressions. Picking this up today for my fiancee, we both loved the GC one and shes been looking forward to his since I told her about it.
It sounds pretty good, how many save slots does it have?

I was at Wal-Mart yesterday, but the flower on the boxart made me so MAD that I left the store empty-handed. I really enjoyed Chibi-Robo, so I will be picking this up later today, cursed boxart flower notwithstanding.

The folks over at http://www.thecoverproject.net/ have whipped up a custom cover using a scan of the actual packaging spliced with a Wal-Mart logo-free version of the cover that they got off of Nintendo's press site.

Direct link here.

Unfortunately, the scan of the back cover and spine sports duller colors than the front cover image. Personally, I think that the cover that I made features slightly better colors. I'm sure a Photoshop expert could improve on it, though.

My logo-free cover.

I adore Chibi-Robo on GC (it's one of the top 10 games on the console, imo), but I live in NYC, where we have no Wal-Mart... I'll have to wait until I venture from the city to get this.

Started playing this last night. Go Canada and non Wal-Mart exclusivity!

It's not as good as the first game for me. That one had a sense of adventure, and honestly the Sandersons are sorely missed. The new characters (read: toys) don't have the same spark either.

Graphics aren't too bad. As someone mentioned above, DS 3D pretty much stinks, but the colour palette and design go a long way here. Looks like a really good N64 game for the most part. Except that I noticed a lot of screen tearing once
I got the bike
and started ripping around.

I played probably 3 hours last night, and even though it wad 1AM, something kept saying "just play one more day", so it's got an addictive quality to it even though you're basically just dancing and squirting flowers for the first couple hours. Selling flowers makes getting watts too easy I find too.

I did think it was cool that while in the park, you essentially have to generate your own power to recharge, very eco-friendly. I'll be finishing this before I even start Zelda, so I'll post if I notice anything worth mentioning.

Would NWS have it?

I asked during Zelda's launch party on Sunday and they weren't sure. Mon and Tues I was way too busy to go in and check, and now I'm way too sick. Probably won't make it back into the city until Monday.

This game was so sent to die. It's not even being sold in all Walmarts
I think you're right. I couldn't find it at my local Walmart. I may have to make a special trip to the westside walmart, which is some serious bullshit. Bullshit Nintendo!

just for you

There are only 4 Walmarts in a 100 mile radius of my house that carry the game, and I live in Chicago. There are only 2 Walmarts in a 100 mile radius of my college, and they are both 50 miles away. I don't own a debit card or credit card or anything. Which means I have to make a trip to Walmart just to buy a giftcard and come back to buy the game online. ARGGGGH!

For most of this thread, I've been trying to find a way to get this game without buying it from Wal-Mart.

I'm sure the evil Wal-Mart Empire will crumble almost immediately if you can accomplish this deed.

I should go buy 20 copies from Wal-Mart, then resell them to folks who can't bear to buy from Wal-Mart. Perhaps I could just stick a smile "David-Mart" sticker on 'em.

Oh just great! I got ALL the fucking way to the eastside Norman location. What do I find? An empty shelf space with the Chibi UPC tag! Ooooo. Promising! What next you say? I ask the clerk to help me get the fucking game. He goes in the back for a good ten minutes and comes back with another guy. They scan the UPC- they have 20. Somewhere. But where? Nobody fucking knows because it's WALMART. BAAAAAAHHHHH!

I don't want the WalMart plug dicking up the boxart.

Same exact same thing happened to me with Wii Points cards at Wal-Mart two days ago.

Me: "Do you have anymore Wii Points cards? The ones that have 2000 points on them. I couldn't find a lable for them on the rack so I assume yall moved them elsewhere"
Her: "Let me check" *she checks the rack where I told her they weren't in*
Her: "This is where the usually are"
Me: " I know. And theres no lable for them here so I assume yall just moved them"
Her: "Hmmm. Let me look around"
*she comes back 5 min. later*
Her: "Sorry, I couldn't find them. Let me check in the back"
Me: *looks at watch* "Okay"
*she comes back 5 minutes later*
Her: "I couldn't find those Wii points cards, but I did find this would it work?"
*she hands me an X-box Live Arcade card*
Me: "No"

Then I leave. Which I should have done a long time ago but I stuck it out because Wal-Mart was my 4th store to try for those damn Wii Points cards.

Uhh.. just buy points from the wii store online like normal people do.

And one thing is for sure. NPD will list this game as selling zero units.

Imagine we get numbers and NPD always included Walmart numbers, i'd love for that to happen.

Well considering how hard it is too find this game it might have sold zero units anyways

Horray for no intrusive logo on the box. A rare video game related perk for Canadians.

I'm really excited to start, so naturally I'm here posting about it instead of playing.

*is crushed by a mountainous backlog of games*

Yesss, my Walmart finally had this in stock so I bought it immediately. It definitely hasn't disappointed so far, sure there isn't as much room for exploration but the simulation aspects seem very promising, so they should more than make up for that. Other than that the game feels a lot like the original Chibi, so anyone who played the original would be a fool to pass this up. My only complaint so far is that the dialog seems a little too intrusive, sometimes I just wish that stupid thing would shut up and let me play already, but other than that its more than living up to my expectations.

I don't know what the point was, but I sent Nintendo a non-dramatic letter to the effect of "Wal-Mart? WTF." It won't go past the first level of customer service, but, eh.

I'll pick it up when I'm in Canada sometime.

Stephen's article is right on point about this subject.

It's a fun game, but misses the mark of the original considerably... and more still, the PR stuff is just lies and fluff.

Chibi isn't Walmart exclusive in Canada or anywhere else in the world for that matter. I guess that must mean Americans are the only people who care about the environment!

I don't think we should hold Nintendo's stupid fucking market campaign against the developers or the game. It's not Chibi's fault they send everything to die.
Didn't the game do pretty well in Japan? I seem to remember it holding onto the top 10 for a while. Chibi could be a big franchise for NOA if they pushed it along.

They're still being purchased from Wal-Mart. :p

If I only boycotted Wal-Mart when it was convenient for me, it wouldn't be much of a boycott, y'know?
