choose one sequel that you wish that was never made

POP WW rocked. you have a bad taste. You should have written 2 thrones instead.
Nah, Warrior Within sucked. Completely ruined the Prince, had a generic, uninspired mood compared to the magical sands of time and focused too much on combat which sucked. When there was platforming, it was great, but everything else just plain sucked.

Two Thrones has its own problems but was a massive improvement.

Mega Man games are my favorite but this one...

To even say it was OK is tough. It took the series down the wrong path for me. X8 was better but still some games don't belong in 3D or perhaps they do just not like this.

Blood 2

Buggy mess right from the start since I remember glitching out in the first level. The game was rushed out and pretty much abandoned by the pub.

Mario 64 for setting back the 3D platforming genre by an entire generation.
wait. what? What were the 3D platformers before Mario 64?

Edit: nevermind, I read the discussion about Crash Bandicoot and Jumping flash.

They had to go and mess up the multiplayer didn't they? And by releasing it so close to JK2 they also managed to splinter the player base and kill off that game prematurely as well :(

I'd love a proper JK3 some day though.

I loved this game, albeit the single player aspect. Never played multiplayer in either JK2 or JA. I know I'm in the minority, but I loved the lightsaber combat in Jedi Academy much more than JK2. I know it doesn't have much of a story compared to JK2, but I felt JK2 was limiting me in so many ways with having to depend on guns so much early on, and the lightsaber attacks weren't as diversified. I probably would have a completely different take on these two games if I had played JK2 before playing Academy.

It's an okay game, but announcing and releasing another Onimusha game for the PS2 right when everyone was in next-gen hype mode was ill-advised. Capcom misconstrued it as lack of interest in the series and killed the whole thing off, when it was really more a case of oversaturating the series on the PS2. If this had been held off for a bit and released as a 360/PS3 game, it almost certainly would have sold gangbusters and the series would be alive and healthy.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I miss Onimusha so dayum much, it's a sin that it seems to be skipping over this generation and we get lathered in a new layer of Resident Evil on a daily basis.

At first they were like "SNK Vs. Capcom game announced for DS", and I was like group of dudes leaning forward in excitement, and then they were like "...card battles!", and I was like group of dudes sitting back with dead expressions.

I would like to submit:
metroid-zero-mission.3892184.jpg

No, don't worry, I acknowledge this is one of the finest purest Metroid experiences, save for the very modernized hand holding. But I'm just tired of the series having to keep pulling back in time and shoving more plot in between games for some reason, and finally let us see what the heck happens after Metroid Fusion. I want to see a rebel Samus on the run from the galactic federation and working to take them and their Metroid cloning shenanigans down so bad, especially after Other M!

I understand, and even agree with your complaints about the game, but I cannot agree with this choice. Gameplay-wise the game is a ton of fun and I'm very glad it was in fact made because judging by Nintendo's recent history with the series, if we didn't get Zero Mission we wouldn't have gotten a second GBA Metroid. If anything, Other M is the Metroid game that shouldn't have been made as it did pretty much everything wrong for a Metroid game and didn't even have the fantastic gameplay that made the 2D Metroid games so legendary.

But I don't mean to start a fight, merely voicing my opinions, I'm pretty passionate about the series :lol

EDIT: Hit the submit button by accident before I finished voicing my thoughts, oops.

Too much so. None of the satisfaction of charting a huge-ass environment, none of the satisfaction of playing smaller levels with the benefit of thoughtful level design. It's the worst of both worlds.

I would say it was the best of both worlds :D easily the best Castlevania since Symphony.

Megaman X7 on the otherhand totally should not exist, what a shameful game.

The gameplay rocked. I actually love the free from combat with dismemberment of enemies, and the time travelling puzzles of PoP:WW.

But the charm of the original game was the whole package. Gameplay + Aesthetic. The seriously dropped the ball here with the emo makeover.

FF8, FF10, FF13, FF7 spin offs.

Two games that I like, but should not have been sequels to the series they were sequels to are street fighter 3 and deus ex 2.

Revenge was one of my favorite arcade racers of all time... then they turned around and made this boring chug-fest. Open world my ass.

DXIW for me.. its not even necessarily a bad game.. its just a terrible sequel to Deus Ex, and thus, the worst sequel ever.

Fallout 3. It changed the entire tone of the series and Obsidian had to make the real Fallout tone a fucking Trait in case dudebros couldn't handle something not srs businesses.

Super Smash Bros Brawl. I had to install homebrew just to make it playable.

Burnout 4. Killed the series.

Aside from the exclusion of Assault mode (which was available as a user made mod), I loved everything about UT2003, especially the Double Domination mode, which was sadly excluded from UT2004. Although I loved UT99, I disliked its cramped levels, and preferred the more open levels in UT2003. It's probably still the game I've played the most.

I didn't like UT2004 that much. Many of the levels were too large (it was sometimes hard to keep up with the team in big Assault levels), and IMO they screwed the weapon balance.

Loved also the "gimped" sniper weapon in UT2003, and disliked the return of the old sniper rifle in UT2004.

Shame though, that they didn't include randomly changing levels in the SP campaign in any of the games.

P.S. Now I've got an urge to play the game again. =)

Yes, the UT2004 sniper kinda sucked, even though I was ecstatic when I found out the classic sniper was back in. The intention was there, but execution was off, and I ended up preferring the lightning gun anyway.

I too never minded the lightning gun, I was just nostalgic for the old sniper, but it ended up being a disappointment.

But the cramped levels of UT99 together with very powerful projectile weapons like the flak, razorjack, biorifle, and eightball RL, gave the original a very aggressive, in-your-face feel, where you were constantly hunting your opponent, fights never lasted long and there was not much chance of escape.

The power of the weapons together with the claustrophobic levels made for very intense, short encounters.

It kinda lost that in the sequel.

And your point about assault being available as a mod also applies to DDom in UT2004. It was also modded back in. :)

And yes, UT2003 came with some great maps, but great maps have always been a UT hallmark.

Besides, with UT2004, with the E.C.E. pack, and the two community bonus packs installed, it had soooo many great maps, I'm sure there was something for everyone.

I don't think I even played every single map I had. There were just too many and I kinda got stuck on the great ones. :P

UT2004 was awesome for user made maps. Such amazing ONS ones, which put the retail ones to shame. I even played a amazingly convincing pseudo-cell shaded ONS one. Blew my mind. I never imagined that could be possible as an ONS map.

Bioshock 2 is much better than people give it credit for. I think it just came too soon. If they had released it a year later, it would have done better all around. The only offensive thing it does is try to insert Sofia Lamb into the story of Andrew Ryan. If she had simply come after his death in an attempt to pick up the pieces, then it could have been a much stronger story. If I had one other problem its the Big Daddy you play as is apparently armored with tinfoil. They really needed to do a rethink on how health was managed, but it doesn't have much impact on the actual gameplay.

Man I agree very much. I really liked B2, and really like the first one. I just had to say it.
As for worst right off the head: 2 fast 2 furious. I know it's a movie, but the fist was a GREAT MOVIE! The second was absolute trash . . .

left-4-dead-2.jpg

And only after a year no less. Most unnecessary sequel in all of gaming. Nobody asked for it before announcement. Everyone just wanted L4D1 DLC (which 2 ended up being, just for 50$). They could've used that time to get Portal 2 out quicker or continue working on Episode 3/HL3 but instead they did this, still makes me smh to this day. It's the only massive annoyance from Valve in an otherwise perfect record.

I'll back him up. BioShock 2 has better combat than BioShock 1. I didn't like it as much as the first because it was such an obvious money grab and didn't really have anything interesting to say.

My contribution: Ultima 9.

ugh.

I think I'd have to agree with this. But they do have other blemishes...namely Condition Zero.

I still can't fathom this hate for L4D2 being a full sequel.

There's so much content in it that you could never justify it as DLC. Not to many it's far more ambitious than the original and I would argue better in almost every single way. Plus, Valve has supported the original with a lot of free content, along with 2, so that people who didn't want to buy another game still got more support than 99.9% of other titles do.

Lots of sequels are unwarranted, but I still say people who think L4D2 never should have been a seperate release are just feeling way too entitled to stuff from Valve.

This topic is pretty much why I hate the industry today. Too many people compare games to their successors when they are still a great title in and of themselves.

Agree with this. Burnout 3: Takedown was the pinnacle of the series IMO.

Everyone praised Paradise but when I played it I had one question: Where is crash mode?

I got to enjoy open world driving with Midtown Madness back in 1999, it wasn't especially great in Paradise. It just forced you to drive around to get to the good events.

L4D2 came about because the game was a huge success on consoles and Valve wanted to support it with DLC without Microsoft being the complete gate keeper. Their intention was for things like mutations, new infected, new maps, etc. be available through title updates, but they were either too big or needed to pass cert, so Microsoft just insisted they sell them through XBLM. Which, well, huge win for Microsoft, not so much for Valve who saw another TF2 situation forthcoming.

So they released a sequel with as much (and more) content with the infrastructure hooks they needed to get things like mutations out there (though they still had to compromise on new maps).

What Portal 2 is doing on PS3 is what Valve ideally wanted to happen with L4D1, but Microsoft was having none of it.

And honestly, considering that L4D2 was a better game and I've logged nearly 300 hours in to it, I would throw whoever tried to take that game away in front of a train without a second thought.

KOTOR2Logo.jpg

One of the most unsatisfying game experiences I've ever had and it threw the whole franchise out of whack. It was at best, 50% complete. If they hadn't rushed that turd out and fucked everything up we may have got a proper KOTOR 3 instead of the thing being made now.

Came to post this, also the fact that 3 will never happen just leaves such a sour taste in my mouth. 1 is one of my favourite games up there with MGS3.

Hm... I would say MGS4, but despite how it treats a lot of the characters, there really wasn't that much left to Solid Snake's story anyway. Too bad it has given Kojima free reign to run other characters like Big Boss and Raiden into the ground.

But I'll probably go with Metroid: Other M. The game itself isn't exactly terrible, but the absolutely asinine story and horrendous treatment of Samus didn't quite do any favors for a great majority of the fans. And with Nintendo giving us the "we don't know why Other M didn't sell so well! (hint: you probably won't be seeing Metroid again anytime soon)" treatment, I really, really wish that the game wasn't made just so the series wouldn't be in the perpetual rut it's in right now. That, and the story still makes me extremely irritated even to this day when considering how fundamentally terribly handled (even on elementary, basic story-telling levels) it was.

First Place

KP3o7.jpg

This game does its best to ruin the series. Solid Snake's character castration, Otacon being so insufferable, Drebin giving history lessons when they no longer matter, Meryl's bastardisation, Johnny's inclusion, the horrible storytelling and the fact that you.... installing... installing... installing... have one of the dumbest ending twists ever. MGS2 had its flaws, mainly the fact that Kojima was clearly overreaching when it came to his ability as a writer. But MGS4 just destroys what should have been a great sendoff.

Actually, you know what, throw in MGS2 also. Fuck both these games. Both one side of the same shit-stained coin. It just so happens one side is more dirty than the other.

Second Place

Dm5Np.jpg

All style, no substance. One of the worst stories I've ever been subjected to with moronic characters everywhere. The person who had command of the scenario and design of this game should never be handed that kind of control again. The only decent aspect was the battle system. The only great aspect was the gorgeous visuals. Everything else, from the story (why focus so much on this if you're this incompetent at it), characters (ahahaha), crystarium (crappier version of a levelling system released nearly a decade ago), poor weapon upgrade system (say what now), and pathetic world building (here is a datalog) was embarrassing.

Third Place

egSD4.jpg

Why Capcom, why? I didn't deserve this. I deserved better. All exaggeration aside, it was very bad. Thankfully, unlike with the other two, I recovered from the trauma.

There are many other trite sequels (like the FF7 spin-off on the PSP) but these were recent and vivid memories.

To be honest though, the X series took a steep quality dive after X5. I do hope to get more X games, but only after Capcom's love for the series has returned because it became clear real quick that they started to just become cash-ins.
