Washington (CNN) Donald Trump has become the first Republican presidential candidate to top 30% support in the race for the Republican nomination, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll, which finds the businessman pulling well away from the rest of the GOP field.

Trump gained 8 points since August to land at 32% support, and has nearly tripled his support since just after he launched his campaign in June. The new poll finds former neurosurgeon Ben Carson rising 10 points to land in second place with 19%. Together, these two non-politicians now hold the support of a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, and separately, both are significantly ahead of all other competitors.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush stands in third place with 9%, down 4 points since August, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz holds fourth place with 7%. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker follow at 5%, with all other candidates at 3% or less, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who notched the only other statistically significant shift in the poll by falling 5 points since August.

I like the fact that Walker and Rubio are so low too

those guys are literally robots controlled by the kochs, I'd be surprised if they ever had an individual thought

The most amazing thing about watching Trump is observing how the media laughed and made a joke out of him in the beginning - then they start tripping over each other trying to get an interview with him once he went up in the polls. Now they show INCREDIBLE deference to him and fawn over whatever he says. It's amazing the media we have.

Every candidate is controlled by someone. The people who choose who we get to choose from.

I think he should be the new owner of the nickname Teflon Don. Everything that would sink any other candidate on any other year just slides right off his back. I've never seen a candidate steam ahead like this on nothing but ego. It's actually quite interesting.

And pray so Hillary doesn't fuck this up, because based as he is, Bernie is not an easy sell.

If Sanders gets up, I assure you, he will beat Trump. The Socialism boogeyman isn't so powerful these days and the only thing Trumpet seems to be good at is making enemies.

He's really going the distance. Can you believe it?

my position has always been that he can go the distance if he actually wants the nomination.

At this point it looks like he does, he's been making some smart moves lately. Numbers are down with college educated voters? Back an income tax plan that isn't insane. Said something dumb that's being spun as anti military? Challenge CNN to donate profits from the debate to veterans.

At this point he's pretty much bulletproof to anything the rest of the crowd can toss at him. The rest of the field just has to hope he gets bored and goes away on his own.

Carson is absolutely NOT the real deal here though. No one has spent more than 30 seconds attacking this guy, and his debate performance was a disaster. no one noticed because they were too busy focusing on Trump. No indication he has any real desire to be president either.

I'm not sure trump is really under "control" in any meaningful sense. His campaign is a disaster for anyone with any interest in seeing the GOP succeed.

The surge in popularity of Carson is interesting too. Don't think anyone was expecting that either.

the white evangelical crowd has coalesced around carson, which was easy to see coming. Establishment candidates have been taken to the cleaners by Trump, and Huckabee has pretty much lost all credibility. He's clearly in this for book deals and speaking money- Carson at least APPEARS to be authentic.

A question however. Who controls Trump...
Answer: His cerebral cortex.

This is excellent news truly. I will recount this election to my descendants for years to come if Trump garners enough support to win the nomination.

How long until the actual vote for the nomination? This is pretty awesome.

Edit: oh my god, the nomination is in July 2016? Another year of this? Crazy.

Holy shit. Jeb is just... over.

Who would have thought Trump and Carson would be leading the polls right now... Wow.

After being roasted at that white house correspondents dinner, I for sure thought Trump was finished politically especially after his birth certificate stunt. But he's a very shrewd and populist businessman. His rhetoric is resonating with a lot of people. I know a few Indians and Chinese who are saying they wouldn't mind Trump as president. Additionally Carson and Fiorina just shows that the GOP voting base is over politicians or career politicians. Because they've been getting the same schtick since the 80's.

I honestly would be shocked if you would've told me the presidential election could be between Bernie Sanders for the dems and Donald Trump for the Republicans. Still a long way to go though.

He's starting to approach a level of support where, even if he loses the nomination, he would still have such a large faction that he could wreak havoc.

I don't think his ego could handle losing. He might just keep fighting into the convention.

We as a nation seriously need to hope that the current direction holds. Sanders vs. Trump is a fantastic opportunity to hit the reset button on this whole shitstorm. A fair chunk of the Republican base, even they couldn't stomach President Trump.

Ben Carson second place behind Trump?

I mean as ridiculous as Trump is.. BEN CARSON?

THIS GUY???

Only thing that could slow Trump down is not being very knowledgeable about foreign policy...and I can almost guarantee he could wiggle out of that. He's sorta in the same position that Sarah Palin was in, where he'll have to deflect because there is no way to coach him on the all the nuances of international relations in a few months. People like Clinton, Biden, etc have been immersed in it for decades.

But even that probably won't slow it down because he will double down on his domestic policy, which is easier to grasp for the average voter.

I just wonder how Trump's future performance will go when he gets questions beyond the scope of "What do you want to do with illegals?" You give him a foreign policy question, he'll flub badly. We already got a glimpse of that earlier this week. I'm wondering if a really bad blunder will slow his campaign down. I'm thinking not.

It's true, Trump's doubling down may resonate strongly with the low info voter while Clinton's long-winded policy explanations can turn people off.

Really?

You'd think that anyone against trump would get most of the non-white vote.

A good chunk of Democrats are still scared shitless of anybody calling himself a socilist, even if he's largely an European social-democrat of the classic school.

McCarthyism did a number on America.

People seem to have a weird misconception if Bernie Sanders as not interested in rights and equality of non-white persons.

Messages like that won't even matter when the media are covering Trumps next threat to Mexicans in spite of that deeply racist messaging resonating with no one but the deep south. The Democrats would actually be feeling pretty comfortable right now no matter which way the Republicans intend to attack them.

Clinton v Trump has a better chance than Sanders v Trump, if you ask me. Sanders would have to work hard getting his numbers up among the Black community which make up a good chunk of the Dems and then going middle for the general. Clinton already has it, basically. Personally I can see voting for Clinton simply to stop Trump is more likely there, where with Sanders I could see people just staying home. But Sanders has been working on that, and I wouldn't be shocked if the rhetoric gets out of control from Trump's side in a general election and minority voters come out for anybody BUT him. Trump is so outspoken, he is going to rile up some...interesting supporters. Things ran away from McCain and Romney, I can't even imagine what we'll see here. So that could play a part.

I'd like to see what Trump's current numbers are among minorities. They would have to be a disaster...but then again, I didn't expect him to gain ground among women but here we are.

As long as the main thrust of Trump's campaign is that he will keep this country white and English-speaking I don't think any other candidate will find an issue more deeply held by the GOP base, nor can they parrot his platform any louder than he already does.

The GOP is stuck between a wall and a hard place with Trump.

His head is up his own ass, so I'd say his rectal muscles are massaging his brain thus controlling him.

Better than the Koch brothers. Say what you want about trump, but friends of mine find him appealing because he isn't beholden to some
Special Interest. I think there's some truth to that.

That doesn't really excuse anything else but yeah. We know he's not a puppet for some billionaire donors.

The real question is if the GOP will get its shit together after Trump messed up the whole party or if they'll see him as an example and double down on the crazy. Because seeing how the Tea Party hijacked the party overnight, it could very well go either way.

Blacks and women will definitely vote for Trump.
