Colin Trevorrow Exits Episode 9

If Indy 4 and Tintin are any indication, I don't think I really want to see a Spielberg Star Wars. Not that he would want to do anyway at this stage in his career, especially with Lucas off the franchise.

Tintin has better action and adventure than any Star Wars film since Empire tho. I agree Spielberg won't want to do Star Wars though.

Fast and Furious has yet to have a good movie. Ripping off Point Break doesn't count.

Furious 7 is actually art. I could break that down scene for scene.

If he weren't doing Aquaman, James Wan would be my pick. He is one of the most versatile directors in Hollywood.

What is it about Star Wars threads that brings out the worst in people?

No matter what happens, no matter how good of a movie we get, people will always complain.

To be fair to Spielberg, Indy 4 was George Lucas's fault more than Spielberg's. The main reason it took forever to even make Indy 4 is because Lucas was desperately clinging to his "aliens in an Indy movie" idea and eventually Spielberg and Ford caved.

I'd say the opposite actually and that Spielberg's impulses are what dragged this movie down, not Lucas's. The Aliens/Cold War/ Body Snatchers 50's paranoia stuff with Indy in America is the best part of the movie. It's when Indy goes to South America and it feels like a limp dick version of Raiders and Crusade that it really suffers.

Kylo Ren is basically the only good thing about TFA. Way more interesting than another boring villain like Darth Vader.

I loved TFA so I don't think Ren was the only good thing about the movie. But he's definitely up there. The revelation that he's an insecure dark side user who's basically cosplaying as his grandfather was a great twist to the character. I also like that he's so blinded by matching the image of his grandfather that he doesn't seem to be totally aware of the fact that he may already be on par with Vader in terms of Force ability

That's a good point, honestly. I just think the entire movie as a whole is pretty limp dick.

Yeah, the set pieces in Tin Tin really were incredible. Can't believe I'm saying this.

Fancy Clown, I find myself agreeing with so much of what I read from you on here.

i will forever maintain that the aliens concept is not bad. it could have worked. but the execution was so bad in so many ways

yup

Hey all.

Rian Johnson is a very good writer and director.

He makes very good stuff. He seems very careful about the fiction he creates. Its thoughtfully made.

That's about it.

Bronson is like that kid in every film school who likes bad movies because he thinks it makes him more unique.

Okay, how do you guys want 9 to end? I think I've got the characters in a pretty good place:

Rey: Pregnant
Poe: Slips into heroin addiction
Finn: Topples current republic and becomes dictator of the galaxy using the Resistance
Kylo-Ren: Served to Porgs alive after Rey cuts all four limbs
Phasma: Leads republic army against Finn
Luke: Geriatrics home as he falls into alzheimer's
Rose: Wookie romance with Chewie
Snoke: Publicly hanged with no fair trial
BB-8: Becomes mobile trash can at military parades
R2-D2: Finally deactivated
C-3PO: Deactivates R2
Hux: Dies in car crash on the way to support the senate against Finn

That should about cover it.

Even if they had used cross-dissolves or...literally anything else, like sane individuals would have, the movie is still too shmaltzy and obvious to touch the first Matrix movie.

Wachowskis doing Star Wars would be interesting to see if they could make a bigger space opera train wreck than Jupiter Ascending tho. Finn would randomly have elf ears for no reason.

David Lynch. Full creative control. I'm ready.

Actually though it would be nice to see Spielberg deliver a SW film.
While he might be upset with the lack of respect for the lore, I think Lucas would be happy with Lynch directing it at this point, because it would mean it was in the hands of an artist doing things his way. He has seemed a bit sad about giving his personal creation to Disney, as though it was necessary to keep this thing alive while being free of it, but it's not the way things should be.

Lynch's Return of the Jedi would really have been something.

Tintin has better action and adventure than any Star Wars film since Empire tho. I agree Spielberg won't want to do Star Wars though.

It just felt pretty dull and empty to me. Sure, pretty technically proficient, and I know people cite that one tracking shot sequence (though I don't think long tracking shots in animation are remotely as impressive as in live action), but the action in that movie just didn't mean anything to me.

To be fair to Spielberg, Indy 4 was George Lucas's fault more than Spielberg's. The main reason it took forever to even make Indy 4 is because Lucas was desperately clinging to his "aliens in an Indy movie" idea and eventually Spielberg and Ford caved.

The problem for me isn't even the aliens concept, I think it's just a badly put together movie on even the most fundamental levels.

Spielberg has also talked about being bored with doing action movies, so maybe his heart just wasn't in it and his only interest was in working with Lucas and Ford again. In which case, I definitely don't want him directing Star Wars now!

One person who I saw mentioned on Twitter that I didn't even consider at first but thought would be a great choice is Gore Verbinski for Episode IX. He has a lot of the right requirements and probably some of the better circumstances to be asked by Lucasfilm:

1. He's directed a solid trilogy with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for the Disney family.
2. He's had experience dealing with younger performers and bringing out decent to really good performances.
3. His last film was a box office bomb so he'd be willing to come back to the big leagues to establish his comeback.
4. Rango is the only modern 3D animated film I would consider to be as good as Tintin when it comes to action and spectacle.

Oh it's been considered. The reactions were hilarious.

Empire released an article today which includes Rian Johnson talking about directing TLJ.

http://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/last-jedi-exclusive-image-finn-rose-canto-bight/

Sounds like the dude had the time of his life.

Empire said:
Also in the issue, Johnson describes the complete freedom he had to take The Last Jedi in whatever direction he chose, without having to follow a roadmap laid out by either J.J. Abrams or Lucasfilm.

"The perception of these films is that they're all planned out on a secret sheet of paper in advance, but that's just not the case," he says. "I wasn't given an outline of where it goes or even a list of things to hit. It really was just, ‘Okay, what's next?'"

"I was terrified coming into this that I was gonna be like Barton Fink and have a script that was due six months ago and I'm still on page three writing about fishmongers. But it's the most fun I've ever had writing something. The whole experience was incredible: just tapping into my ten-year-old self. Even though it's Star Wars, the whole thing has felt bizarrely similar to my experience making Looper or Brick or The Brothers Bloom."

Wait a second

You're telling me RJ wasn't lying when he said he had complete creative freedom to write and direct EP8?

And that his film will have its own personality?

That can't be true. It's a SW film, after all.

BRING THIS MAN BACK GODDAMMIT

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 sucks, and 3 is total trash.
His last film was one of the most dreadful things I've seen this year.

Fuck no.
