College Football 2010-11 Bowls: *

Interesting. I doubt he could ever break up the cartel of the BCS. But could he attract 8 second tier teams that would make for a compelling product?

This year alone you could have a tourney of Nebraska, Mich St., Florida State, SC, Mizzou, etc etc. How could that not work and garner bigger ratings than the bowl games they will currently appear in?

Although the reality is that those teams will have pressure from their league not to join it. So, instead you would get teams like Boise, TCU, MAC teams, Big 12 and Big East teams, Conference USA teams. Etc. That could still be profitable (?) but not wildly so.

I agree that it would start as a sort of NIT for teams from non BCS conferences who want a better payout. I think it would only take one year for a team to get screwed out of the MNC and end up bolting to the tournament to turn the tide. That or wishful thinking.

I missed this.... just updated and put in my picks.... really nice that my picks will be right there when I watch the games (and make far more sense than having to remember to check the website to see what my picks did). espn3 really is the model all tv channels should be looking at in terms of taking their channels online.

Here are the Unanimous and Consensus All-Americans for 2010:

The NCAA recognizes five official selectors of All-Americans for its records books. Those five selectors are:

Associated Press (AP)
The Sporting News (SN)
American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)
Walter Camp Football Foundation (WC)
Football Writers Association of America (FWAA)

An athlete who is named to at least three of these five lists is deemed to be a "Consensus All-American". An athlete who is named to all five lists is recognized as an "Unanimous All-American". Below are the those who achieved those honors this year:

UNANIMOUS ALL-AMERICANS
RB - LaMichael James, Oregon
WR - Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State
OL - Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin
OL - Rodney Hudson, Florida State
DL - Da'Quan Bowers, Clemson
DL - Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue
LB - Greg Jones, Michigan State
LB - Luke Kuechly, Boston College
DB - Patrick Peterson, LSU
DB - Prince Amukamara, Nebraska

CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICANS
QB - Cam Newton, Auburn (AP, SN, WC, AFCA)
RB - Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State (AP, WC, AFCA)
WR - Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma (AP, FWAA, SN, WC)
OL - Nate Solder, Colorado (AP, FWAA, SN, WC)
OL - Chase Beeler, Stanford (AP, SN, WC)
OL - Lee Ziemba, Auburn (FWAA, WC, AFCA)
DL - Nick Fairley, Auburn (AP, FWAA, SN, WC)
P - Chas Henry, Florida (AP, SN, WC)

First one is meh, second one is fine and dandy. Keeps the same branding, adds stars accordingly.

Personally, I dont know why they HAVE to keep the Big Ten name. They are the most prideful sons of bitches ever. Should have called it the Big Midwest or The American Conference, I am sure all the Ohio State fans would be tickled pink at that.

Because it's all about marketing and brand recognition. The big 10 brand is probably the biggest conference brand out there, you cant just change the name on something that is that big.

I should quote this when anybody asks why Bama got the best non-BCS bowl birth for the SEC.
Not surprised at that, except who actually watched the SEC championship? No one with brains, that's who!

LeGrand has some sensation in his hands.

DALLAS -- Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand has some sensation in his hands, but he remains paralyzed from the neck down.

Rutgers spokesman Jason Baum said the family confirmed the sensation in LeGrand's hands late Wednesday, adding nothing else has changed.

Last month, LeGrand was taken off a ventilator and is able to breathe on his own. His injury was reclassified from a complete spinal cord injury to an incomplete spinal cord injury. He is rehabilitating at Kessler Institute in West Orange, N.J.

This is great news. He is still paralyzed from the neck down, but this gives hope that he may yet regain some mobility in his hands one day.

Is this like one of those political talking points that's been repeated so much that people, whom it favors, assume it's true?

Toughest conference ever, year in year out, no weeks off, running the gauntlet, I've been on business trips!

You know what is awesome and a true test of how good your are in the conference? A round robin. Best way to determine a conference champion if you ask me, and anybody that objects is just looking for a money grab from a conference championship game.

Couldn't agree more.

Well it could be true. If by "Out there" he means the midwest.

I'd say the insane amount of money each school in the conference makes is proof that the Big Ten is one of college sports' most lucrative brands.

UCONN has sold about 4,000 tickets thus far. Oklahoma isn't doing so well either.
BCS Fuck Yeah!

The Big East Conference’s revenue-sharing system requires its bowl-eligible members to pool the bowl money and then divide it accordingly based on a tier. So the Huskies are in line to receive around $2.5 million, not including an expense allowance from the league for travel costs that takes into account the distance from Storrs to Arizona.

Curious, do other conferences do similar things like that?

Apparently, Mike Leach was on a Tulsa radio station today and said he's "open" to the idea of being OSU's o-coordinator next year.

As weird as it sounds, I would be thrilled for some additional publicity and continuity in our offensive system with Weeden and Blackmon coming back.

It'll probably take $1 million/year to get him to Stillwater, but Boone can make it happen. :D

Pac 10 splits all bowl revenue equally after expenses are figured in. Each bowl gets a specific amount of expense money, comes out of the schools AD budget if they go over. Biggest expense can be unsold tickets so a team that sells them all will usually be able to stay within the budget.

Article from today's Seattle Times discussing bowl finances in the conference and specifically if UW will break even on the Holiday Bowl trip.

From what I understand, the SEC collects all bowl money together, and I want to say does something like this:

Split it into 14 pieces.
1 piece for every school
1 piece for the school involved in that particular bowl game
1 piece for the SEC Office.

So, say 7 million for a BCS game that Auburn is in.
$500,000 per piece
Auburn gets $1 million
The other 11 schools get $500,000
SEC Office gets $500,000

Repeat for all other bowls

Estimate for the teams this year, probably way off:

Code:
Alabama	$2,424,994.00
Arkansas	$2,728,566.00
Auburn	$2,728,566.00
Florida	$2,228,566.00
Georgia	$2,182,137.00
Kentucky	$2,132,137.00
LSU	$2,228,566.00
Miss State	$2,210,709.00
Ole Miss	$2,121,423.00
South Carolina	$2,292,852.00
Tenn	$2,178,565.00
Vandy	$2,121,423.00
SEC Office	$2,121,423.00
Total	$29,699,927.00

Easy to see why the Vandy's, Kentucky's, and Mississippi schools would want to stick around. Free Money!

It works kind of the same way in the Big 12.

You divide it up into 14 pieces.

You give 13 of those pieces to Texas, and divide up that 14th piece into 12 more pieces, which you then hand out to the conference teams and the conference itself.

ugh... that 16-team playoff is maybe my worst nightmare for the end of a college football season... all those critical games during the season reduced to zero meaning.

I never want to see a 16 game playoff ever. Look, congrats on winning the Sun Belt and all, but kindly go fuck yourself.

It would be the only fair way to do it though. If teams from the Sun Belt should never be allowed to compete for a championship then why are they in the FBS in the first place?

Top 10 most disappointing seasons according to the Wall Street Journal:

  1. Texas
  2. UF
  3. Miami
  4. USC
  5. ND
  6. Georgia
  7. Michigan
  8. BYU
  9. Tenn
  10. UCLA

BYU? That's quite an ignorant statement. A true freshman QB, two freshman TEs, loss of starting RB to NFL, some new OL players, basically entire new DL, couple of new WRs, and a couple of new LBs. How were they supposed to do much better than 6-6?

He's saying that winning the Sun Belt isn't worth a damn. Going undefeated, especially given that Sun Belt teams are usually the patsies, would be entirely different from just winning the Sun Belt conference. As a reference, let's look at Boise. It's really too bad about this year. They'd be in the MNC game if only they hadn't choked, despite their shitacular conference. Gosh darn it.

So the SEC won't get looked down upon for playing too many Div1-AA teams :P

+1 (4 team playoff) is the way to go, if you ask me.

Only other solution I'd see without ruining the regular season is a 6 team playoff, with the top 2 seeds getting a bye in the first week. That's it.

They could still get in, but they would have to have at least 2 quality OOC wins + a conference sweep. Just how non-AQ's get into BCS bowls.
