1ST PLACE WINNER:
The Wicked + The Divine #1; written by Kieron Gillen; pencils by Jamie McKelvie; colors by Matt Wilson; published by Image Comics (43pts)

2ND PLACE FINISHER:
Deadly Class #6; written by Rick Remender; pencils by Wes Craig; colors by Lee Loughridge; published by Image Comics (14pts)

3RD PLACE FINISHER:
Moon Knight #4; written by Warren Ellis; pencils by Declan Shalvey; colors by Jordie Bellaire; published by Image Comics (12pts)

Here's How It Works
In the last week of the month (or earlier, if you're confident about your choices), any GAF member can send me a private message with their personal picks for the three best single issues released that month, from any publisher. These picks should be arranged in order of rank -- first, second, and third place -- and each ranking will be worth a specific point value. A first place ranking for a comic is worth 5 points; a second place is worth 3 points; a third place, 2 points. Then before next month's COMICS! OT goes live, I'll tally the results and point values from each ballot, and post the top three overall winners in the next OP as last month's, GAF-approved, best of the best. Then, maybe at the end of the year, we'll have a showdown between the year's top finishers or something similar.

A Sample Ballot
This is an example of how a sample ballot submitted by you might look. You don't have to use this formatting but I do ask that, however you send it to me, you are CLEAR on which comics you are voting for and in what order they are ranked.

Average GAF Member said:
1st Place: "Super-Fun Team Adventures" #14 (Mystery Comics; story by Jack Johnson, art by John Jackson) [worth 5 points.]
2nd Place: "Children's Bedtime Stories, Only With Nudity and Cursing" #69 (Happy Puppy Publishing; story by Jane Doe, art by John Doelner) [worth 3 points.]
3rd Place: "Grimdark, Extreme, and McDarkerson" #474 (Amazing Comics; story & art by Smitty Smithengen) [worth 2 points.]

The Voting Rules
1. Only single issues released that month are to be considered for voting; no trade collections, and no "just caught up" considerations for issues released one/two/however many months ago. Sorry if this excludes you from the voting process, trade-only readers and mail-order folk. I didn't see any other way.
2. Each GAF member is allowed one ballot, and once that ballot has been cast you are done for the month. If an issue comes out and you think it's the best comic you've ever read or will ever read, but you already cast your vote the week before, that's too bad. In other words, there are no take-backs so VOTE THOUGHTFULLY.
3. Three comics per ballot, and no more. You could send me a list of the ten best comics that month, with full paragraph summaries on why you ranked them in what order; but in the end, I'm only going to tally points for the top three and ignore the rest. You CAN pick just one book as the best that month... but that one vote is still worth only 5 points.
4. No ties on the ballots, please. You have to pick three comics as the best that month, and you have to rank them "1st, 2nd, 3rd" so that I can assign points to each. If you're torn between two issues of two different series as the best that month, and you can't decide which one you loved more than the other, TRY.
5. To make things a bit easier on me when it comes to making the OP, I'm establishing a deadline for casting ballots of 6pm Eastern Standard Time on the last day of the month. You can cast your ballot at any time during the month that you wish; however once that deadline has passed, any ballots sent to me will be ignored.
6. Again, to make things easier I would prefer that your votes be cast via private message sent to me, rather than through an open post in the OT. In addition to keeping the voting process a secret, using the PM method means I won't have to search through thread pages for someone's vote posted as an afterthought to an unrelated discussion.

Failure to comply with any of the above rules MAY result in your ballot getting thrown out.

Other rules and stipulations may follow, but for now we'll roll with these for the first round and see how it goes. Have fun voting!

Spoilers. In the age of digital comics, they are increasingly becoming an issue in these threads, as the drive to be first to discuss the week's releases overrides common sense and good posting etiquette. So over the coming weeks and months, the members of Comic GAF will be collaborating on and will eventually be implementing a system of general rules for avoiding spoilers on new comics in the Comics OT thread. But for now, please abide by the temporary guidelines outlined below. And remember, you are being watched and judged by your peers.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

In short, don't be Stephanie Brown. Don't be... The Spoiler. For one thing, you're not that loveable. >:|

Happy reading!

Like the picks of the month and looks like a bunch more people voted. Good!

I read Wicked + Divine, I thought it was an interesting concept but didn't seem like anything special, YET. So for the folks who voted for it, what was it that did that for you?

I'm not asking this to say you're wrong, just curious what really sold people on it. I plan on continuing to pull it, I guess I'm just not in that swoon state a lot of others are.

Fuck yeah, Wicked + Divine destroyed.

I voted:

1. WicDiv
2. Sex Criminals #6
3. Superman #32

Great choices.

I would have voted that exact way but for some reason, Outcast really resonated with me. I'm in a horror mood.

1. Outcast
2. WicDiv
3. Sex Criminals.

Excited for Rocket Raccoon and Spider-Man 2099 this month.

My top three was:
1. Wicked and the Divine
2. Sex Criminals 6
3. New Warriors 6
\o/

I'm on vacation now! I had to stay an extra two and half hours tonight but now I have a week to
not
read comics!

It was the art, the originality of the plot, and how much of a badass Lucy is. It was fun, interesting, and exciting. Everything a first issue should be.

I know that Image likes to give its creative teams some time off in between arcs but is there a reason that The Fuse won't be back till November? That seems like such a long time and the last issue ended on a cliffhanger.

Maybe one of these days I'll get caught up enough to vote in these threads..I switched my Midtown shipments to bi-weekly so I actually have some of the books in the month they came out. Only thing I'm actually caught up on is Uncanny Avengers.

Also, what the hell is Zombie Tramp?

The arc's not done yet. #6 is due on July 30th.

Ahh, you are right. I went back and read the letters page and they talk about not being listed in previews because issue 7 doesn't come out till November. I guess I just got confused and didn't realize it was only issue five.

Do people at comic con smell? just asking because of the title

Some do, some don't.

Yeah, but who has that kinda shelf space?

Anyone else playing the M&M's $6 texting promotion thing? I've won three times so far and have used my $6 credits on getting Amazon gift cards. Just ordered Chew volumes 7 and 8 for $5 each. Still have another $6 to use. Of course, you can use the credit on whatever you want but I'm choosing comics. :D

Most of the time it's the fact that there are thousands upon thousands of people congested into the same areas with very little ventilation.

Seconds finally coming out means July will be the best month until Multiversity finally comes out next month.

Just because there was some talk about cons again, Controversial comic opinion, I wish SDCC and NYCC, and hell all the other COMICcons would go back to just being about fucking comics. NYCC was so much better when it was just comics. Those first few years were awesome. My friend and I got to spend time just chilling and talking to Jerry Robinson, which was unreal. I couldn't see that happening now. (Not just because we lost Jerry in 2011.)

It's a MARS Summer Movie Moments promotion: http://www.marsmoviemoments.com/
This is limited to US residents only and runs through August 10, 2014.

Basically you text movie to 78787. It'll then ask for your birthday and then e-mail address before confirming if you've won or not. If you do win, you'll have to enter the code at the link they send you. Just make sure you select the $6 streaming credit (the choice on the right), that way they'll give you a $6 prepaid electronic Mastercard. Each day "resets" at 9PM PT/12PM ET since you can only do it once a day. I have my girlfriend texting in as well, so between the two of us, we've won 3 out of 15 tries or so.

Confession time. I only started to read comics AFTER I had attended my first comic convention (Wondercon '11). I went to Wondercon because I was frequenting San Francisco at least once a weekend per month. It just so happened that on one of the weekends I was there, Wondercon was happening. Something about celebrities being there and Street Fighter art caught my attention. So off I went and came out of there creating a little list of comics that I should begin reading. So, if it weren't for that, I probably would have never started reading comics.

I did meet Christian Slater there. He was walking around casually with a small entourage and one of them gave me a compliment on my camera gear. We had a quick chat, asked him how he was enjoying everything and snapped some photos together. Unfortunately, my picture came out blurry (my cousin didn't really know how to steady his hands when holding up a DSLR) whereas his picture came out fine. Christian was much shorter than I thought he would be.

Confession time. I only started to read comics AFTER I had attended my first comic convention (Wondercon '11). Heeeeey I was at that con!! The last Wondercon in the Bay I think ;_;

I remember Thomas Jane was there too and he was walking around barefoot o_O I would say a lot of times, attendance at these events also acts as motivation and kind of like a spark towards this hobby. Seeing all these people who are just as interested, if not more, in these things is such a joy.

I guess for me, I know very little people in my "real" life that enjoy this culture, I don't even chat with the people at my LCS much about it, so it was refreshing to meet others in the same circle as me.

I saw him at Long Beach CC in 2012! I also thought it was weird he was barefoot
because it was in the bathroom. I pissed next to The Punisher!
. apparently it's just his thing

I have my girlfriend texting in as well, so between the two of us, we've won 3 out of 15 tries or so.
oh sweet, thanks. I'm gonna be doing this every day.

I voted for

1. Harley Quinn
2. SAGA
3. Wicked and the Divine

Lots of good stuff this month. I didn't know Death Vigil was this month. Totally down for that.

My list included no Image books because I ain't about that Indie early issue hype life.

Sorry Messi I did my part as a member of the Harley Quinn Cabal.

On the issues of cons and their relevance to comics, anything that brings anyone into this delightful hobby, even tangentially is wonderful and we should never subdivide ourselves. You wanna meet artists? You wanna cosplay? You wanna buy questionable slash fiction from the back of Spikes car? It's all good.

Then Harley at the very least got 12 points and Spike chose moon knight over it. Spike please. Why must you hold down the Quinnettes?

No, if ours were the only votes that'd be 10.

Also, thread friends make note of Biis 100+ posts and know that half of them were lovingly placed and framed shots of his comic book lovers.

Zombine said he was also voting for it. I believe first.

I DEMAND A RECOUNT

Edit: I've a feeling Zombine never sent in his votes. We would have gotten 2nd :/ we trusted you Zombine.

Edit: Bryan Lee O'Malley is doing a signing in Forbidden Planet Dublin while I am in Florida. Fuck sake. Why. Damn it. Wait that says August not July. I am in town. YESSSS.

Great OT! Glad to see WicDiv take it by a huge margin. Was definitely my favourite book of last month.

Super excited for Rocket Racoon #1 and TMNT #36 this month.
