Company logos that changed for the worse...

Feyenoord went from this:

Thank God last year they went back to the old logo.

Starbucks' new logo never fails to bug me when I see it. Horrible idea to get rid of the border. On the other hand, Comedy Central's new logo is fantastic due to the creative marketing campaign built around it.

Also: "Syfy." What the fuck. I mean really.

I agree with those who are against the new Tropicana bottle. The clean aesthetic ends up just looking bland as hell and I think designs like that already look extremely dated.

Nearly everything posted in this thread is an improvement on the old. Some I don't like, such as Pizza Hut (the old one was wonderful IMO).

The Pepsi re-design had to happen at some point or another. The 1973-2009 logo looks like a Korean flag. It's uncomfortably close and that would be a major detriment to its global marketing appeal.

It's my opinion that part of the problem isn't change itself... it's when you make TEXT an intrinsic part of a logo.

For example... if Coca-Cola decided to remove their iconic lettering and just introduce a red can with a swoosh on it, we'd still know what it is and still buy it. THAT is proper branding.

The Pepsi backlash wouldn't have been so terrible if they hadn't done something drastic to the logo. Aside from the logo, the re-brand was fine by me.

And that was what was wrong with Gap... their logo was a SQUARE WITH TEXT. You can't really change that because the text itself is what identifies the brand, so they're stuck with a font they can never alter without HUGE backlash. Same thing with the Wal Mart redesign... their logo was entirely font-dependent because it was all text.

Here's an example of how to do it in my opinion:

The brand logo of the yellow price tag is still there, but the font was changed and separated from the logo itself because it's not the highlight.

And the constantly mentioned Tropicana example COULD have worked had they retained the orange-and-straw that people identify the brand with, but maybe re-did it as vector art to maintain the modern look they wanted to achieve.

My Blank
My Underline
My Put Something Here

Confusing, not clever. My Space is meant as a personal place, area or spot. Not a gap between words.

They don't even understand their own brand.

"I accidentally the logo" is probably the best way to describe it.

The GAP logo redesign has inspired me to go into graphic design for marketing as my career. I just called my boss and told him I quit.

Here's my first professional work as a designer:

EviLore, PM me to work out the payment options. I accept PayPal.

Pepsi 1898 logo is the best. It also looks like a font stolen from some black metal band's logo.

And I liked the Spider-Man font used for the PS3 :(

This is kind of like saying there is not Victorian or Elizabethan art because Victoria and Elizabeth were Queens. Obviously there is an aesthetic associated both with those eras and with visual design in the current era of computer technology.

Obviously.

Just to iterate on this, some links:

I think the more interesting question is why there is a constant need to rebrand. How does a font go out if style? How does a logo go out if style and look dated. My guess is that part of it is just fatigue setting in and a rebrand is neccesary not because the logo doesn't work but that if you are going to rebrand you have to have a new logo.

And let me guess, you were born some time between 1965 and 1985 (not a hard bet given the demographics of this forum, which tend towards the late end of that range). In which case, of course it was iconic, it was everywhere and Coke was at a nadir because of the New Coke debacle.

I think the most aesthetically idealized Pepsi logos are the 1940 or 1950 versions, respectively for the pre- and post- bottle cap design shift.

Indeed I was... how did you guess it?

Still I try to think of my love for the logo as not nostalgia ridden...

Those of you saying that they zoomed in on the wrong part of the muse/mermaid on the Starbucks logo were absolutely right. Instead, we're left wondering what could have been...

Cleaver use of white space is super common. It makes more sense than just saying he randomly put the m sideways.
Does it really make more sense? A bird squawking at another bird? That's reaching, IMO.

I really hate this one, for a swedish telecom company:

The old one isn't fantastic either, but at least it was unique with the asia-inspired font and the colorful circles. Switching to a drab purple and anonymous font is just a weird choice. "Let's be less noticable!"

Most of the newer logos are much better than the older ones posted in this thread. Except for GAP, that one is just awful. Unless they were trying to pull an "Urban Outfitters", what with their wordart styled logo:

What the hell? Please tell me that isn't real.

It was real, for a time. Given that Urban Outfitters serves the "hipster" demographic, most people conclude that this was their stab at being "ironic." It was even cut off at the top of the picture, just like that. I don't think they changed any of their store signage, or print materials. But yea, that logo is really terrible. It's like their designer was told to "make the most god-awful logo ever."

It was only on their website, which was completely redone to be as terrible and '90s as possible. It was interesting and fit the ironic, nostalgic crowd they go for.

Same in Norway.

Logo makes sense for a telecompany.

Looks OK. Was made to look more minimalistic, but the lack of a spark makes it look like a parrot in my eyes.

Da fuck is that? Is it a wind power company? Critics called the new logo "penis propeller".

TeliaSonera did the same for all of their brands.
