Cops make surprising gesture when couple refuses to sit near them

If it was me that they paid the bill, I would simply told the waitress no. Looks like they gave you a nice tip because they can stuff their snarky comment, I'll pay my own bill. Maybe the person just wanted a little quiet and not to sit next to a table of dudes that are most likely going to be chatting. Its a huge leap and super arrogant to assume its all about them and because they are cops.

You aren't sure what I'm trying to accomplish? I'm making it well known a meal at Denny's doesn't make up for decades of oppression, violence, unfair treatment and out right murder and much of this going unpunished and even being rewarded. You call it a nice gesture, and I say that nice gesture doesn't really matter that much when the cops at large are still a rather dangerous power mad force that has armed itself like an army and treats its citizens like shit and expects them to be respected and loved for it.

No one at Denny's or here on Gaf are suggesting that this nice gesture is going to magically erase what has happened in the past. By this logic, we'll never be able to move past the wrongs and start turning things around, because no matter what anyone does, it won't be good enough.

I read the words and read about the context of the situation and perceived it as a good thing that they did, in spite of the cold-shoulder they were given for no reason.

Blanket statements suggesting that all cops are bad is just nonsense.

We have no idea why the couple avoided the cops and we never will.

His comment reads as "when cops do something good for the community, they get shot at" (EDIT: which I can't say I agree with in general VS the specific case he's speaking of). I didn't see anything about shadiness happening as an alternative to doing those good things, as if it's an all or nothing proposition, but maybe I'm missing something?

so i'm suggesting that they do the right thing with the end result being they get shot and killed, but the poster i was replying to ISN'T suggesting that they shouldn't do the right thing because they get shot when they do the right thing... i .. but ..you .. uhh .. what?

Whoo I love cop propaganda! Like yaaaas make me forget about structural issues in the #system by doing puff pieces! Perpetuate that national apathy!

I like how a lot of people like grouping cops up into the same group, and act like they're all corrupt, killers and just generally bad people. Really lets you know who the special people are in threads and society.

No? If they actually made some real fucking changes to the organization I would praise them. I've praised the Dallas PD for trying this and mentioned how messed up it was that they were the ones to be targeted despite their many strategies and attempts to right the wrongs of the police force. You guys equate some hollow empty gesture turned into a PR move as some kind of benevolent band aid for all the wrongs because "good cops"

Nah no thanks. They want me to praise them and respect them they stop hiding behind the badge and start firing the actual bad cops, not standing up for them when they do something horrible, actually working and listening to the civilians they deal with and son on.

Yeah because we know the police force doesn't racially profile people or anything...

as if them treating kittens more humanely than people is something above criticism.

See what I mean? You automatically assume that the officer in that hypothetical situation doesn't treat people humanely. All logic and reasoning goes out the window as you attempt to find a way to turn a good story into baseless criticism.

So there aren't 2 white and 2 black cops sitting in that picture? Guess black cops profile themselves as well and are also corrupt towards other black people.

Are you saying black people can't be racist?

Black people need to assume the cops at large will treat them inhumanely in any situation because it happens all the damn time and every week people die because of that/

The All Cops Are Bad narrative needs to be pushed front and center.

The system of police is corrupt at its core. Being a cop almost always entails either falling into corruption or protecting those who did (either actively or inactively).

that's actually true!

:lol :lol :lol

I fucking adore when people bring that up, because it essentially communicates how poorly they understand institutional racism.

where are the good cops? where are the cops speaking up about these things?

which group seems to be the only one that never seems to have people immediately and strongly condemning wrongdoing?

What a nice gesture so laden with passive aggression. "Thanks for your support". How nice and totally not smug of them!

No. If a cop doesn't march in a BLM protest, that doesn't automatically mean they are doing shady things. The two states are mutually exclusive.

The other poster said that when cops did the right thing, they got shot at. You said that more cops should do the right thing in response to that. What conclusion should somebody draw about what you said, based on the context of the reply?

Also, can you see how what people write can be interpreted differently, depending on their point of view of the person reading it and the context in which it was presented?

and what about what context should they draw about the post i was replying to?

#AllPostsMatter

The All Cops Are Bad narrative needs to be pushed front and center.

i'm going to continue assuming that any given cop is bad until i see widespread police condemnation of abuse and corruption in their own ranks along with a meaningful reform effort and concessions from their unions

a cop can be as nice as he or she likes to civilians but as long as they remain silent in the face of the behavior we've seen in this country they are doing more harm than good

I equate the Not All Cops idea that people push with the whole Responsible Gun Owners Shtick. They're all good cops until they're not.

and what about what context should they draw about the post i was replying to?

I asked about your post, not theirs. Do you address every post in a thread in order or do you directly respond to those you choose to respond to? You are the only authority I would trust wholeheartedly to answer for what you truly meant. So I'm asking you directly what you truly meant and if my analysis of what you said was correct.

....That's exactly right lol.

If you paid any attention to the Freddie Gray killing, you'd know this.

so you're just blatantly ignoring the post that i responded to?

ok, cool.

You're blatantly ignoring my question and acting just like an #alllivesmatter ass by using semantics and misdirection in lieu of having an honest discussion. Doing the same shit that they do doesn't help anyone or promote any interpersonal understanding.

No, it's not cool.

sorry black folks seem like you haven't earned the the right to be distrustful of cops

they should, they are all gangsters and drugdealers anyway.

do you see the fucking issue? blanked statements help no one and destroy your critical thinking. these people are human, just like you and me. for people that try to be progressive, your way of thinking is highly damaging and regressive. you wont solve any problems like this.

why do people put general statements about cops on the same level as general statements about blacks? this is honestly confusing to me

black people can't stop being stereotyped

while cops can find another job

When my mom was a kid she saw a friend of hers mauled by a dog. To this day she is afraid of dogs. Now, she can be around them, but she has what she likes to call a "healthy" fear. She understands that a situation COULD go wrong given the right (or wrong) kind of dog, even if it is unlikely. I think HStallion is just taking the more extreme approach to this type of thinking because emotions are running high.

Also...a cop can totally get another job.

because they are blanketstatements about whole groups of people you dont know and you never even talked to.
you have no idea about their motivation, way of thinking and opinions on things. even if they choose their profession. dehumanizing them is in no way shape or form helpfull in ANY FUCKING WAY IF THEIR IS A PROBLEM.

We won't solve any problems because people like you equate optional police work with mandatory blackness.

I see the issue that you're comparing "people in one of the most dangerous and powerful organizations in the nation" to "a group of people that have been oppressed and brutalized for centuries by police and non-police alike"

If they want to be good cops, fucking call out the bad ones. Silence is support.

Because it's easier to be dismissive of the actual issues causing the amount of distrust of police by people of color than it is to actually unpack and deal with it.

Basically, distractions. The problem isn't how people react to and talk badly about cops. The issue is that the police institution as a whole is racist and corrupt and that most people don't want to fix it.

It's the prime reason I'm sick and tired of hearing the word "unity" thrown around as if the oppressed haven't been trying to do that shit this whole time. The problem isn't with "both sides". Period.

And then I disagree with the notion that there is only one correct way to combat the issues at hand, which to many of you is whistleblowing and publicly denouncing colleagues. Well, guess what, that's a really daunting request for most people, but that doesn't mean they aren't doing shit internally via complaints, shaping or reform in their communities. The idea that there is only one correct way for a cop to do jack shit is your way is not something I agree with. At the end of the day it is a job, yes, which means it is a livelihood to them and jeopardizing that is not something that should easily be expected. Just because they're not whistleblowing does not mean they are complicit in the killing of black people and are doing jack shit. Out of sight, out of mind, apparently.

Exactly. You aren't a good cop if you are quiet about the bullshit in your and all departments. People need to come to grips with that.

Then they're not good cops. A good employee will call people out on bad behavior, to keep their workplace working smoothly and to be a safe place. If my co-worker was ignoring safety issues or violations by other employees, my first thought is "this is a bad employee." If a cop is doing the same, I will say "this is a bad cop." Having an excuse doesn't change this, it just offers a little bit extra context as to why this cop is bad.
