Cops make surprising gesture when couple refuses to sit near them

If I was the kids I rather learn an important life lesson that not all cops are asshole. They did more good for those kids than just another March would do imo

That march might save their lives in the future because it lead to reforms that stopped a shit cop

Oh, well that was nice of-

If they want to prove that they are good people, paying for a meal at a restaurant isn't the way.

Actually supporting peaceful protests would get them a little respect, but this just screams "We think we can buy your respect".

Maybe it's not about buying respect but rather sending the message that they are decent people and that they want to help. Four cops sitting in a restaurant minding their own business shouldn't have to go out and start a "peaceful protest" to gain anyone's respect anyway.

I mean that's nice of them but how about they hold their brothers in blue to a higher standard and make sure they aren't judging people off their preconceived notions on race? This is like offering a man who has been shot several times and bleeding out a high five. Maybe they can stop short from shooting someone at a traffic stop and then think to turn on the body cam and take a selfie with it and go,"Look we didn't kill this one!"

We've had how many marches because of police violence, we lost 5 officers because of police violence, that shit won't change.

A no nonsense overhual of the rules these officers work by would work, as well as the extinction of a police union.

Let's

Some ice cream

vs.

A brave showing of solidarity in making sure I don't have to live in fear of being profiled and/or killed when I grow up.

I'll take the Chocolate Taco

How do you know they're not? Are holding your precinct to a higher standard and buying
someone's meal mutually exclusive?

You're being entirely too unreasonable with these requests.

God, just enjoy that the people got a meal. Rome wasn't built in a day.

We managed a hybrid cop thread and tipping thread. Like the optimal nesting ground for hot takes.

If everyone ordered 25$ meal each a good tip would be about 4.5 each or about 18 dollars for the table.

10 bucks for the whole table is cheap unless they all ate really cheapily.

That doesn't look like a 25 buck per meal place. Looks more like a local O'Charlies type of restaurant. It would be easy to eat there on 10 bucks.

i would stick my fingers down my throat and vomit the food up.

then pay for my own meal with my own money.

and leave a TWENTY DOLLAR tip.

food paid for by the unjustly spilled blood of innocents? no thanks sir.

Just an interesting article I saw. A link to the full story.

Don’t sit next to me if old.[/QUOTE]
Nice gesture. An even better one would be if they were willing to ultimately take the stand in court when they see a fellow officer breaking the law or falsifying records.

You're kidding right?

It's completely trivial and has absolutely nothing at all to do with the very real, very pressing issues at hand here. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it obviously, but it still addresses nothing.

So, yeah, of course hosting a march, being an integral part of that, as in interacting with protesters in a meaningful way, and not gearing up like you're ready to do go to war would be a far more impactful gesture than buying a kid some treat.

Jesus people. No one is acting like paying for a meal rights all wrongs. We should be encouraging police to interact with the community in positive ways.

No feel good cop threads allowed until everything is fixed everywhere :(

Like I've said before, holding up good cops as an example is one of the better things the media can be doing. Encouraging other cops to follow in those footsteps. The highlights on how Dallas PD is changing the system cannot be shared/praised enough.

Oh for fucks sake.

Maybe they can invite African American officers to come in uniform to the next Juneteenth celebration or invite all officers to join in other community events in a non security capacity. Let everyone get to know each other, show officers that they're a part of the community instead of apart from it.

They aren't trying to buy anyones silence or whatever. They are repaying asshole behavior with a kind gesture.

People on gaf need to chill out with the hate.

The cynicism trickling in is pretty depressing.
You know what's even more depressing? Black people dying in the streets by the police.

No one is hating at least I'm not I just don't care about some cop passive aggressively buying ice cream and I'm not gonna celebrate him for it. So fucking what.

Whoa whoa whoa. That's a bit much, isn't it?

$20 tip for a meal for 2 at a Denny's?

I'm not a cop? What are you talking about. I just see this as a hollow gesture to a couple who didn't want to sit next to them. As if paying their bill was a passive aggressive remark is somehow going to alleviate these peoples fear of the cops.

You're being entirely too unreasonable with these requests.

God, just enjoy that the people got a meal. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Nah I don't think so. I see a bit of self promotion and snark and that's about it.

I see it as a way of saying: hey we're nice people here to help, there is no need to be so openly hostile

anyway I'm probably being too naive here and this tipping was likely part of some grand evil scheme I'm not seeing

They ran to the media with it, made sure to get a good picture of them all there.

The note itself was pretty 100% passive aggressive. It was clearly designed to shame the couple.

Difficult situation: can't tip too little, but if you tip TOO much then it's patronizing and condescending.

$10 seems pretty good but I'd need a calculator and an itemized copy of the bill to be sure.
