Amazing cover.

Also, a team is translating 2U.

I've had Corpse Party and Book of Shadows in the backlog since forever. Should get around to playing them.

Looking forward to this!

Book of Shadows was in a weird situation. The first game was massive for XSEED, so they devoted a lot more resources to BoS (which was confirmed by Tom many times), except that the game is a direct sequel that didn't feature the same kind of gameplay as the first game, not to mention it was delayed for a few months. I think XSEED's expectations for the game were too high, most likely because of how well the second game did, but as a PSP game on its own being released in 2013, I still see it as a success in my book.

Day 1 pre-order, just point me when so I don't miss it!
Good to hear that it's compatible with PSTV for almost sure, I need to play it on big screen with friends cause I'm scaredy cat alone.

Great news! Will be getting this day 1.

It's a shame THE ANTHOLOGY is a no go. Would Kickstarter be an option, or a preorder campaign like Gaijinworks has been doing?

Any newsletter for when preorders go up? Can't miss it.

Really really really ugly box art though. Is there going to be different art used for the outer box and the box art? I'd have expected to see the original limited edition box for the outer box and the new art for the game case, but "Everafter Edition" contents means that's the outer box? Surely they're not both the same. 'Not depicted in the game' doesn't seem like a very good reason. The new one doesn't even depict the main character (judging by previews, unless it's still switch ups like before)

But some people like it, so maybe I'm wrong. The original artworks just seemed really ominous; scrawled out faces in a group photo with a forlorn look, or leaning against a bloodied wooden stake cross in dark dusk woods
which even if it isn't depicted in the game, seems like it would tie in perfectly with the final chapter of BoS.
By comparison, the new art is... a close-up of a red eyeball and a really cartoony electric device. RE: Revelations 2 box art except 10 times cornier. I don't know, I'm just not seeing it.

If it were the original limited edition box, with the new art for the box art, and a reversible cover for the original art, everybody wins?

I'm kind of liking the cover more the more time I give it.

And Tom's explanation for their reasons for the cover make perfect sense.

Previous "one." Book of Shadows was nowhere near as popular, unfortunately -- the visual novel style really didn't seem to appeal to people as much as the RPGMaker style of the first game. A shame, really, because the game itself is an excellent follow-up.

That, though, along with the drastic tonal shift, made 2U pretty much impossible to justify releasing. We wish we could've, but the numbers just didn't work out.

For those saying it's "non-canon," though, I do feel the need to correct you: although most of the events in 2U are irrelevant to the overarching plotline of Corpse Party, they *are* technically canon.

Also, for those of you commenting on the box art and/or logo:

The "green glowy thing" in question is a set of two Everafter Stones (as we're calling them in English), which are extremely important to the story of the game. They exist on the front cover because they're part of the English logo, and they're part of the English logo because each previous Corpse Party title has had one element from the game appended to the right side of the logo: the first had the blood splatter, the second had the Book of Shadows itself, and the third has the Everafter Stones.

As for the text of the logo, the "BLOOD DRIVE" is taken straight from the Japanese logo, but the "Corpse Party" part needed to be translated. We were going to just take the English "Corpse Party" text straight out of the first game's logo, but the coloring and stylistic differences between that text and the "BLOOD DRIVE" text looked... really jarring. So we adapted the logo from the first game into something that still looks more or less the same, but is more stylistically consistent with the "BLOOD DRIVE" text.

...Oh, and the box art itself was a no-brainer. The regular Japanese box-art is a huge spoiler for the previous games, and makes the game look like some kind of school dating sim, while the Japanese LE box-art depicts a scene that's not even in the game at all (at least, not as depicted). We elected to eschew both images in favor of something a little more representative of the mood and narrative of Blood Drive -- and that eye pic is both creepy to look at and also has a lot of subtle detail in it (for example, did you notice that there's a word spelled out in the cornea? It's in Japanese, but it reads "Sachi." This is a central plot point in the game).

We were already discussing the possibility of a reversible cover, so we'll definitely take note of this and discuss it internally.

I'll admit, I'm surprised at the mixed feedback to this box art, as we were fairly unanimous within the office on this one, and completely in agreement that this was a much better choice than either of the Japanese box arts, as well as the iconic Ayumi-in-tentacles image (which is not only not in the game, it also looks a bit... shady). ;) But while the box art we chose definitely does have its fans, you're not the only one to object to it, so we'll see what we can do about picking something else for the inside, or at least providing a reversible cover if nothing else.

The "cartoony electric device," though, is -- as mentioned -- a major part of the game, and specifically part of the English logo, so that's likely going to show up no matter what.

The cover doesn't look too great but oh well I'm just glad we get a physical edition.
I don't think the device to the right of the logo should be there at all it since the glowing green parts clash too much with the colors on the cover.

I like the original box art, it looks like a dating sim at first glance but subverts it and is appropriately creepy.

Of course, I basically don't buy physical games anymore outside of kickstarter, so I don't know how much impact I should have on the choice :p

Amazingly stoked to have a firm commitment for Blood Drive this year.
The hype is most assuredly warranted for this one. Can't wait to re-experience it with GAF... ideally with an opportune and timely Halloween Week release.

I think that was sort of the idea! Also very representative of the game, which regularly juxtaposes horror with anime-style supernatural fighting action. They clash, but they clash in a very specific manner that's kind of intriguing.

Either way, man oh man, you guys are brutal! ;) I thought this was one of our best box arts ever, personally. Subtle, creepy, eye-catching (again, no pun intended), and subverting the usual "just throw the main characters on the box front" approach to cover design.

But yes, we will discuss the possibility of alternate inner cover art and a reversible cover. I can't guarantee anything, but I'll make sure to bring it up at our next meeting.

Only thing that felt off to me was that ever stone thing in the logo. Without that one, it'd have been the perfect cover for me.

The art itself is great, but the font for "Corpse Party" and the green stones just don't work at all. Not a deal-breaker, but it's quite ugly.

The font for Corpse Party is the same font as always, though! The only difference is the color scheme and texturing on it, which was done to match the "BLOOD DRIVE" font (which was taken right out of the Japanese logo).

I don't see why including the original Japanese cover art as a reversible option is a bad idea... spoilers to past games (not this one) notwithstanding.

Seems like a reasonable compromise. That or the shot of Ayumi leaning against the crucifix. I probably like that one the best personally.

ETA or info on when or where we'll be able to preorder the LE?

If the outer box is the same eyeball art, my vote for the reversible cover goes to the crucifix art as well. Superior to the spoiling one.

I personally like the box art in itself Tom. And I have nothing against its theme or selection of character. I think it is great.

What stops it from being amazing for me is simply an aesthetic reason. The green glowing stones definitely clash with the rest of the box art. Green and red are extremely tricky to combine with each other, and for me the green of the stones ruins the "flow" of the artwork.

The entire composition of the box art is meant to guide the viewer towards the zoomed in eye, which is definitely the main subject, but there you have this flashy green object breaking all the harmony in the coposition.

Have you tried simply placing the stones without any green or glowing effect? I think that could improve the cover dramatically without altering its essence.

I'm not a big fan of the box art at all. It's nice to know the reasoning behind it but if this was on a shelf in a store it would get lost in the crowd and doesn't really show what the game is about or like.

The eye does stand out and gives you a good idea that it's horror. That part is fine

If it means anything Tom, I like the cover.

Anyway, a bit of a tangential question; why do some Xseed releases have the Marvelous logo on the front, while others have the Xseed one? I actually thought that you guys had stopped using the Xseed logo completely until I saw the cover for this.

I was wondering the same when I saw the Lord of Magna box today which has a Marvelous logo

I'm not sure there's an easy way to convey "what the game is about or like" in a retailer-friendly way. Daunting job for the marketing department so I don't envy them on this one. At least this is conveying the game's genre - horror - effectively.

I understand the criticism about the clashing effect of the Everafter stones. Red and green doesn't go together well unless it's Christmas. They are story-centric in nature - in much the same way as the Sachiko Ever After charm was in the first game - so I understand their inclusion. The green glow might be a tad overdone, however.

Here is the Ayumi crucifix artwork I referenced earlier...

Probably not something you could put on a retailer box but as a reversible-cover possibility, I like it a lot.
And it's thematically relevant unlike the bizarre tentacle art and not spoiler-heavy like the class photo shot.

Best part about Blood Drive = Potato Chip-Loving Satsuki

That's an easy one! If the game was published by Marvelous Japan, we use the Marvelous logo. If it was published by a third party, we use the XSEED logo.

We figured, if we're publishing a game from our parent company anyway, it would be kind of rude NOT to use the Marvelous logo on the box, seeing as how we technically ARE Marvelous. ;)

^ That looks amazing but I can't see a cover with a bloody crucifix on it happening in the west.

Yeah, it's one of those things that could bring unwanted negative attention, boycotts, whatnot :/ I really like it, but because of those reasons are most likely why it wasn't used.

I would like to think we live in a progressive enough society that, that cross art could pass as the cover art. Nobody who would get upset about it would ever consider buying the game anyway.

I did a bit of the edit using the original game CG as a base. I didn't have Photoshop installed on this computer so sorry for the sloppiness.

So is the only way to get the physical edition is to buy the LE? I don't really like the bonus content and I would much prefer a standard physical copy without all the other stuff.
