Crysis 3 PC Performance Thread

After doing some NV Surround/3D Surround tests yesterday I decided to run through the first stage again (which is where a lot of people say it's the most "unoptimized"). Very High settings on everything, 2x MSAA:

2013-02-20 21:11:16 - crysis3
Frames: 81093 - Time: 1491432ms - Avg: 54.373 - Min: 6 - Max: 107

Stock clocks on 580 SLI 3GB Lightning Extreme's

It sucks this game is unplayable with multimonitor

I can't get decenet performance on a GTX 690 @5760x1080 with out turning off all AA/AF and medium/low settings

Probably need 3xSLI Titan's :(

Well I just fired up Crysis 3 for the first time, and holy shit is it amazing. I'm stuck on a small 1360x720 tv at the moment, but I guess this is good in a way because on my 1080p plasma I'd be making some concessions.

On my 580 I've capped the frame rate at 30 and am running everything maxed/4x msaa. I have to admit, 30 isn't that bad if it's locked. You're eyes get used to it after a while, other than fast panning which is where 60 really shines.

Any advice? I will mess around with the cvar thing later tonight. Beta testing Marvel Heroes for now.

I have two issues that are bothering me with this game.

1 - drawnearfov resets every time I die or get to another level/checkpoint/whatever

2 - nvm

I turned down everything to Medium except for textures (Very High) and FXAA, and I am getting a pretty steady 60fps on my 680. It still looks great to me even with these settings. Before settling with this, I tried cranking up the settings and capping at 30fps, but I just can't get used to that framerate.

Wonder if your 2GB of VRAM impacting somehow? I was able to play in Medium or High @ 5760x1080 with SMAA. At medium settings It was at least 30 and was playable. Higher settings it gets into the 20s.

I may have 2x Titans coming to me next week if I decide to hold the pre-orders. If so then we'll see soon enough if they can handle it :p

so THAT explains the drastic drops in frames. wtf

I know that Post Processing is the gpu applying things to the finished image. Does it make a huge difference to the way the game looks and performs? Sorry for all the noob questions, but I'm trying to get the best visual and performance balance I can out of this game. I'm not sure what is recommended

Decided to go all in and activate every bell and whistle (other than CRAZY AA, just stuck with some light AA) and lock the game at 30fps, similar to how I played Crysis back in the day on my 8800GTX. Man, this game starts looking great later on. Gameplay is growing on me finally too. The cvar editor they put out is tops.

Did we ever figure out a way to disable/enable the hud with a button press? It's a pain in the ass to have to type the command over and over to take shots.

So, I have a stuck cursor. It's always in game and I have no idea how to get rid of it. Google hasn't helped so far, and neither does creating a new game.
I'd really rather not have to reinstall. Anyone run into this?

My specs: i5 2500k, AMD 7970 /w 13.2 Beta6 drivers

disabling vsync and enabling triple buffering via amd catalyst has done wonders for my fps . still on the first level and its usually 45-60fps. 7970 here.

textures settings on very high, all other settings with the exception of objects (medium) have been set to high

Uggh I feel like I messed something up trying out various v sync solutions, now now matter what I do I can't get rid of tearing. Tried forcing adaptive, using d3d for triple buffering/vsync, in game. I don't know what the problem is. I've got the game limited to 30 fps (Inspector) at 1360x768, everything maxed with 2x MSAA.

I didn't seem to be having this problem earlier today when I was playing. I've been messing with the console commands in game, but those reset every time you start it up right? I don't know if it's just the section I'm in, but it sucks.

Any advice? I'm on a 580, but running it at a low res, and it seemed fine earlier. I'm on the section where the elevator drops down and you kill the guys with their own mines when the doors open. I feel like I've tried everything on and off at this point, but still am getting tearing.

After using the nvidia experience thing it changed the object to medium and shading to high, the rest very high, 2x smaa. So far in the multiplayer it has stayed well above 60 for the most and in single player it's not moving between 45 and 60. So, yeah the nvidia experience is pretty good.

GTX 590, i-7, 120hz monitor, and I think I finally found the sweet spot.

1080p, everything on very high except shadows and shading which are on high, SMAA x1 (low). V-Sync off. Pretty constant 60 FPS with the occasional dip to 50. No tearing. I'm happy, best looking game I've ever seen. Don't tweak anything in the first level though, what a mess.

Increasing to SMAA x2 drops the FPS by 5-10. I'd prefer to be at 60 FPS. This 590 is the best card I've ever owned.

So I am slightly annoyied by my SLI peformance in some areas everyonce and a while. Happened on the tanker and in some cut scenes. Basically... the GPU utilization cuts down to 40% (who knows why) and then the game runs at like a flat 24fps. Looks horrible when it happens...

Happens a lot on the first level.. .but barely after that. Anyone know what is up?

Yeah i noticed the first 2 levels are the real performance killers. The stalkers in the long grass level being the absolute worst. But once you hit the dam and onwards, im getting 40-60fps.

I guess that if I use your settings and put Objects on High or Medium I can get 60 as well then? 680 here.

I haven't ever dropped objects from very high so I can't say what performance gains that gives you. I have however dropped water to high and it does seem to gain at least 5 FPS. It seems one or two of those dropped to high in addition to my settings will get you 60 FPS. The 680 and the 590 are quite similar in performance as you know.

Oh and I should add that I have not noticed any micro-stuttering with the 590.

GTX670
I7 3770
16gb of Ram

1080p/everything at very high/SMAA low/D3D overrider for the vsync.

30-35 fps with (very rarely) drops to 27-29fps according to MSI afterburner.

Surprisingly consistent framerate, please with the performance. :)

Everything on Very High@1080p is around 50-60fps. With FXAA enabled, about the same. Also very comparable with x2 msaa. But, my fps drops into the 30's with 1 smaa enabled.

There is really not a whole lot of difference, maybe 5fps, with aa off and with fxaa or 2xmsaa enabled. I only have 1.5gb of vram and with msaa enabled, I notice my usage creeps up to just over 1.5gb. The most I've seen is like 1521mb of my 1536 being used. Fxaa enabled this drops by about 200mb.

Also, this game absolutely torches my gpu. Temps often climb to 97, which is what they are rated for. Of course, all of this is with Fraps enabled, and sensors are being monitored on my 2nd monitor with speedfan, techpowerup gpu, and nvidia inspector.

I actually didn't! I was just hoping it could come close, thanks!

I'm going to try turning shadows and shading to high and see how my rig responds. I figure your 590 should yield similar performance to my 2 580s. But for some reason my system hates SMAAx1 or 2, but is fine with MSAAx2, and of course FXAA.

SLI users can try with 0x0C0320F5 sli compat bits DX10 in C3 profile using nvidia inspector. And very important, avoid looking at the ropes XD

I'm working on a mod that turns the ropes into snakes, I'm going to call the mod : Ophidiophobia.

Interesting. On mine, SMAAx2 yields a little better frame rates than MSAAx2 but certainly not any worse. SMAAx1 however is a significant improvent in FPS and still looks great. Reminds me of the original Crysis. Tinker and tinker until you find the sweet spot.

660 Ti owner here. After hearing about the snake rope thingy I decided to switch PhysX to CPU. Did wonders for me. Before I was getting an incredibly unstable framerate. Now it's 60 all the way with everything at least on "high" 2x AA and textures on "low".
Before, even with eveything on "low" it wasn't as smooth as it is now. Doesn't only affect the first level but goes all the way through.

Other than that, does anyone know who I get rid of these lines in the first level? Talking about the fog clouds.

My GTX 680 was was in the 40-50 fps range during that first level, but god damn that level looks good. Some of the best looking rainy effects I've seen in a game.

How do I do this?

97 degrees? I have 580s in sli too and temps stay in the 70s..it hasn't gotten that high for any other game?

To the posters above you can put physx on the cpu via nvidia control panel

Right in the defalut Nvidia setting that you access by right-clicking desktop. There are options for PhysX as well.
Dunno if it's related but somehow some dynamic lights seem missing. In the first level there are several lamps to the side of the bottom of the floor. On my first playthrough I was surprised that they are actually casting shadows. They don't seem to do that anymore. Just bad memory? I mean these. Hmm, did this just deactivate dynamic lights altogether? Strange.

Beaten.

Thanks, gotta try that out.

I have never seen my gpu temps reach 97 before. Planetside 2 with ultra settings enabled will drive the temps to the 80s. You think forcing physx to my cpu from auto will lower gpu temps??

660 Ti owner here. After hearing about the snake rope thingy I decided to switch PhysX to CPU.

I was under the impression that Crysis 3 did not have hardware PhysX support. Unless, it was using non-PhysX support from the GPU and this switch just turns on PhysX through the CPU....but that should be default.

Would there be a performance increase or degradation from doing CPU PhysX? The option is there for me but I always offload it onto the recommended in nvidia control panel (GPU2).

I have a more than capable CPU but I don't see why nvidia would give the option to offload to the CPU if it wasn't meant to work at least as good as GPU based PhysX.

Yeah, it's strange. Just turned it back on and noticed that the performance still is very good. Though, I seem to really have disabled dynamic light sources somehow. Sun in the second level is there and casting shadows. Only the first level suddenly seems completely devoid of lights casting shadows. Guess I have to apologize for being wrong. Right now I'm just really irritated about the lighting.
