CVG: Microsoft's next-Xbox silence at GDC a "disastrous mistake"

So much talk in this forum of when they should announce their console. Personally I think it doesn't matter when they announce it. The most important thing is when they will release it, and how much marketing it will get upon its release and what games will it launch with.

Microsoft are no Apple though.
Windows is a pretty big gaming platform, no?

And Apple didn't get where they are today by consulting indie developers at GDC. If the next Xbox is a big success and sells well, indie developers will follow.

I admire what Sony is doing, and if it means more indie games for my PS4 then I'm all for it - I've probably spent more time playing XBLA/PSN games than retail games this generation. But that said, saying this is a 'disastrous mistake' is just hyperbole.

How? If it's like XBLA, they won't be able to get on the platform. That's the difference between consoles and idevices. Sure, Apple doesn't reach out to devs very much, but they don't put up barriers that prevent those devs from getting on their service so they don't have to. Microsoft could open up their platform in the same way though, like they have done with Win8. Win8 marketplace has been pretty bad so far, but if console support would have to improve things.

I hope they have an ace up their sleeve. Pricepoint 349.- or something like that. Because at the moment they are doing some serious damage to their buzzz factor.

or maybe something like "You are the controller" hmmm wait a minute...

Lol. I tried so hard not to go there.

LMAO. People are really getting upset that MS hasnt revealed yet.

Well, their continued silence is getting slightly annoying or maybe even worrisome. I just think after all the negative rumors, Microsoft would at least try to address them in a timely manner. If they don't have a spectacular presentation, they could just sway even more people to PS4 since I think expectations are gradually increasing with Microsoft's Durango. Aren't there still developers that do not know what Microsoft are doing with Durango and the console supposedly comes out this year, right? Admittedly, I am having a hard time believing developers are still in the dark with the Durango and if that is the case, that is not a smart move on Microsoft's behalf. I am wondering if they are trying to upgrade the machine or maybe changing some features around because of the nasty rumors. Seems sort of peculiar, that's all.

Haha what? It's been nothing but doom and disaster about Durango for weeks now.

Their silence is annoying though. I'm expecting a capable machine, slightly less beefy than PS4. Couldn't care less about Kinect.

theres rumored to be the durango unveil april 26. if that comes and goes i'll be a little peeved, but it will happen no later than e3 anyway.

in the end nobody will remember who announced first. it only seems important now.

Maybe Microsoft don't even need to if they secure major third-party exclusives for Durango. It was never a matter of going all-out to that extent but rather a question of what's enough. Who knows? Wait for them to unveil then.

Yeah good point. If they show a capable machine with good games that people want at a reasonable price, it will most likely sell no matter when they unveil it. I do feel like if they decide to unveil it all at E3, then it has to impress or it could be disastrous for Microsoft. I am sure they will have an event before E3 though.

If they do wait until E3, it would almost entirely steal the spotlight from the other two manufacturer conferences. Also remember June is still a decent amount of time away from the actual launch, which would be October or November.

The wait for a reveal may even signal they're purposefully not even releasing this year and riding out 360 as much as they can as the main console, though that sounds unlikely with the lack of big titles on the schedule.

Microsoft didn't wait for E3 for 360 or Kinect. They'll have an event before it and ride the hype train into E3.

The biggest indie gaming platform in the world is iOS. Is Apple at GDC?

Don't you mean PC?

That isn't true in the least. A lot of people still believed it. In fact, many felt it was worth the $600. I don't know if people really believed that, but a lot of people sure said it. That said, I bought it at the $600 price tag because I was very fortunate to be able to, but I can understand how that price might take some people back.

Even though the Wii E3 presser was inspiring and got a lot of people wanting to believe in Nintendo's vision, nobody ever expected it would start selling the way it did, even outpacing ps2 levels at one point.

If you mean GAF, then its very true. I been snooping here since around the PS3 reveal. 2006 Post-E3 around here seen Sony as a laughing stock/arrogant prick.

Well, not really... games take a while to make... so every indie game Sony got, is one less for Xbox.

Windows is the biggest platform of them all... how did it got there? With no restrictions and no involvement from Microsoft. Every other course, meant less support.. when Vista had its store and certification, nobody wanted to sign up... In Win7 cert process was eased a lot, and in Win8 even more and still only tiny big certified.

You have to also take into consideration that maybe it wasn't even that big of a deal, to either gaming forums or the mainstream, back when it was revealed and around launch. Maybe it's just your perception of it now, 7 years later, after hearing the mockery again and again in only recent years...that it makes it seem like it was a giant issue.

Make no mistake, there was definitely an outcry at that announcement, but I'm just saying that maybe it's been elaborated over the years after hearing mockery so much making it out to be a bigger deal than it actually was at the time.

Almost everything from the price("Gamers will get two jobs), to the games not looking better than 360 or some of the more unrealistic target renders, to the giant enemy crabs was being mocked left and right. SCE had a rough patch of years to start this gen, on pretty much all mediums . E3 2006 to be specific was an absolute nightmare.

I think wii's boom really help to drown alot of that out, if anything.

Nuff said.

Expect this kind of stuff for Durango as well.

XNA? It was fun...

Yeah, Microsoft's goal appears to be making it as easy as possible for any dev to create a game that's immediately playable across numerous platforms at the same time. The problem for them is that Windows and Xbox are their only brands you can play games on that sell well. If they're hoping this is going to invigorate Phone or tablet sales, I think they're in for a rude awakening.

This sounds pretty good for Durango.

Now that WP8 and Windows 8 share the same NT kernel, DirectX APIs and tools, it's easier than ever to write games that use the same code base for both platforms. Microsoft is sweetening the deal with a few significant middleware partnerships -- Unity, Marmalade and Havok, to be specific. We talked with Larry Lieberman, Senior Product Manager for Windows Phone development, who was kind enough to explain what these partnerships mean for developers and to give us a tour of the games

Not familiar with Marmalade, but Unity and Havok are obviously huge. I wonder the extent to which they'll focus on cross-platform development being a huge part of Durango.

The moment they announced XNA would die.
I almost certainly know that you can use WinRT to develop for Durango.

I get the sense that it's a huge part of the appeal of the next XBOX. An aim to 'code once, deploy on everything'. A way to appeal to independents, especially smaller ones that will surely make up a huge component of all next-gen console software.

It's far from disastrous, but I think they really can't wait till E3. There'll be so much information demand for their console lauch, they'll end up confusing most people if they try to focus on one or two events.

Maybe they're scrambling to piece something together. PS4 being designed with unified RAM after secret meetings with developers since 2008 to design a system they truly wanted to work on, is MS ready to counter punch?

you really don't think MS had the same meetings with developers about their plans for years? They have always had devs in mind in their engineering plans and tools.

He don't know what he is talking about.

I know exactly what I'm talking about, you're just not understanding, bandwidth isn't everything, why do you think $10,000 dollar servers are not equipped with GDDR5? CPUs don't work well with high latency. GPUs typically don't handle general purpose processing like CPUs but that's quickly changing and in fact next gen there's a big push for GPGPUs. But whatever, I guess I don't know what I'm talking about lol.

Intriguing... what could this possible mean!?

A) Trying to stem the disaster of not announcing by bribing developers with alcohol. Microsoft is dead
B) They moneyhatted all of the developers, and are celebrating with alcohol. Sony is dead
C) They are throwing a party at a convention, and trying to exchange contact information, using alcohol to facilitate this. Business as usual

option D : they just want to be totally smashed that evening .

Microsoft are no Apple though.

When it comes to the game industry, I'll take Microsoft's track record over Apple's. DirectX, Xbox, Xbox Live, the Windows Store.

Windows 8/RT/WP8 run a unified kernel with shared API's which are reaching hundreds of millions of people a year. Microsoft has an app platform and store with a reach that most likely towers over iOS let alone Playstation. If MS goes to an indie developer and says they want to feature their game on their platforms, they do not say no unless they are crazy or have already signed with someone else.

Whoa, I'm quoting myself here, I knew this might happen but I didn't think it would be that soon. Check out what the new Radeon HD 9970 will be equipped with... DDR3!! :o

What in the world are you talking about?
Where did you read DDR3 in that article?
And why did you thread bump to congratulate yourself?

What we do have is the bare list of GPU specs. The 20nm chip has 4,096 Stream Processors, four geometry engines, 16 SPUs (serial processor units), 256 TMUs, 64 ROPs and a GDDR5 interface of 512 bits.
