CVG: Microsoft's next-Xbox silence at GDC a "disastrous mistake"

I'm noticing a distinct trend of games NOT being announced for PS4 even though they are presumably coming. First it was BF4 and now MGSV. Preemptive move by MS to shut up third party devs and overcome this "disastrous mistake" or what? Seems very strange that they will not comment on the existence of PS4 versions even though EA execs said on conference call that PS4 version of BF4 looked amazing and Kojipro have been promoting cross gen abilities of FOX engine for some time.

Wait what? So the new conspiracy is MS is silencing Third Party from mentioning PS4 versions of games at GDC because of a CVG article.

Wow

In all honesty, I firmly believe that Microsoft might be making last minute hardware changes after they were completely caught off guard by Sony, and finding out just how powerful the PS4 is going to be, especially after hearing about the 8GB of DDR5 RAM.

They'd be smarter to beat Sony on price rather than match them on specs.

I don't think at MS are scared at all, actually I think they're still confident in their plan.

I have the feeling you guys are jumping into conclusions too early, many things happened this current gen to let you carried by this PS4-hype.. I still can't forget the PS3 hype several years back

Better to keep quiet than show a social-media toaster and look like idiots, see where I'm getting?

TBH prospects for the nextgen are bleak because we are still in a recession, because anyone can get a good tablet full of free games for $200, and because the Ygen is so much more bankrupt than the Xgen was that car companies say they dont bother marketing cars to us.

The silence of MS is definately strange. Why would they not use the GDC of the release year of their console? Either they have a crazy strategy in the works with less focus on 15-18 year olds or they are pulling a windows 8.

That would be a good choice but, bundling the new kinect is gonna make that hard to do unless they plan on eating up alot of the cost of the bundle. They do also have the subscription option which they will probably use as a option to push the console at a lower price. Microsoft has options.

The hardware difference isn't a big deal because it brings other advantages. It means MS can either undercut the PS4 on price, or they can bundle a really cool Kinect with every system. Both could be good tradeoffs.

If they do have a really cool upgraded Kinect... could be amazing for indy devs and hackers -- I really hope they eventually open things up a bit more and let people go nuts with it.

Yup, in terms of predicting the success and failures of upcoming generation, the most hardcore of the hardcore gamers (the kind that GAF represents) are pretty much wrong most of the time.

The PSP was supposed to destroy the DS, but that obviously didn't happen. The Playstation 3 was supposed to jump off from the Playstation 2's success and destroy the Xbox 360 and Wii, while the latter most system was laughed at and expected to fail. In reality, the Playstation 3 struggled for years and the Wii was a resounding success. Microsoft was supposedly misguided in the creation of the Kinect, and the technology combined with its price point was supposed to be a recipe for a product that was dead on arrival, but it sold incredibly well and was responsible for igniting the 360s sales into new territories.

Basically, the most hardcore of the hardcore gamers don't dictate the direction of the industry anymore, and while this particular base is predictably constant in its tastes and trends, the actual consumer base that's going to decide the next generation is pretty damned unpredictable.

I feel like it's more advantageous for the Xbox to launch at a lower price than the PS4 instead of trying to compete on specs. As long as they're in the same ballpark of performance (according to all the rumors, they are) they'll be fine.

While Microsoft certainly touched on the 360 by this point in 2005, it wasn't formally unveiled until May. And the technology industry has evolved quite a bit since 2005, due in great part to Apple. Companies are moving farther and farther away from conferences like CES, e3, GDC, etc. and opting to hosting their own events where they don't have to share exposure with other companies.

The hardcore dictating what direction the industry heads in ended, ironically, with the first Playstation.

They also had no competition in the new console space in 2005. They could afford to be a little more patient.

why would they show their new system at a developers conference?

The original Xbox was also bleeding Microsoft's Entertainment division dry, and getting completely decimated by the Playstation 2. This time around, the Xbox 360 is selling extremely well late in its lifespan and is quite profitable. As long as Microsoft announces their platform prior to e3, they will not have missed anything of importance. This urgency for them to announce is little more than wanted fodder for console warriors, because they stand to gain very little by rushing to respond to Sony. They'll have 6-7 months to build up hype and support, which is honestly more than enough.

there you have it.

Also I don't understand why MS not saying anything yet is a surprise. Neither company announced jack-shit about the PS360 until May before E3 last time.

If anything Sony releasing info early shows how desperate they are to get PS3 behind them. (Lost 50%+ of market share while MS almost tripled theirs from Xbox1)

It's one thing to not announce your plans officially. But when developers who would support your platform have no idea what you are doing, this is an entirely different problem. A baffling one as well.

MS might have decided it's in their best interest to protect the investment made by the big boys ( EA, Activisioin, UBI, etc ) instead of trying to expand the indie market.

I guess many developers know about their new platform, but they're under NDA..

LOL Now that is some tin-foil stuff if I've ever read it.

My guess is that they've somehow secured some pretty important launch exclusives.

Basing this off the Penny Arcade article where a lot of indie devs have no idea what MS is doing. Are they all lying? Seems to be a common theme. Of course the big guys are working on games right now and are keeping quiet.

So these NDAs encourage indie developers to say negative stuff about Microsoft? Because that's what they're doing.

I really hope that MS itself isn't as blind to its own image problem in the indie community as some of the posters in here are.

wrong... it's obvious they are done with this gen and want people to start thinking PS4 asap.

they lost half their market last gen, they want to get it back, what is tin foil about marketing?

Tin foil because you are saying that Sony's whole strategy is trying to sweep the PS3 under the rug as fast as possible and get people onto the PS4 even though the PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide in the same time span and at a higher cost. They may have lost market share but the PS4's announcement is progress bearing fruit on the next gen, not some crazy theory that MS has Sony scared like you are saying.

The indie development market is pretty freaking large. As it stands now, we're hearing from the indie developers that A) are working on Sony projects and B) aren't working on Microsoft projects. Obviously you're going to be able to create a disheartening narrative if those are your two sources. I'm sure Microsoft has its own collection of indie developers under their umbrella.

Microsoft will be talking to developers...they don't need a conference to do that. Including no doubt a range of indie devs with their XBLA connections.

So these NDAs encourage indie developers to say negative stuff about Microsoft? Because that's what they're doing.

Most indie devs that mentioned MS just said that they've had no contact with them. Which explains why they can talk freely, they're the ones not under NDA.

Lost 50% of market share.
In a corporate world, that is HUGE.

MS nearly tripled theirs.

you can spin sales numbers all you want and you can not change that fact.

If you don't think Sony has been waiting to get this gen behind them to start fresh for about three years now you haven't been paying attention.

When MS wants the Indie developers to know then they will let them know. At the moment I'd say they're focused on the launch titles, services and what big 3rd party games to show at the reveal.

You really need to calm down because bolding losing 50% of marketshare doesn't make your point any more valid. Like I said before, the PS4 announcement was the inevitably of the cusp of the next generation. MS's current position has nothing to do with Sony's decision to announce the PS4 and to imply so is incredibly hilarious.

I found this quote by Jared Gerritzen creative director of Zombie Studios very telling about how MS seems to be approaching next gen:

I think Sony is really in to win this one. I’m good friends with a lot of guys at Microsoft, I’m under their NDA flag, and Microsoft definitely has a different outlook than Sony does, he said.

Sony, like they say ‘Yeah, PlayStation 3 wasn’t what we wanted it to be in comparison in the arms race.’ So now they’re going hard, man. It’s pretty cool, on all points. I think that it will be really interesting to see what Xbox fires back with. It’ll be an awesome E3. Sony is just like, ‘GO! GO! GO! Let’s make this hardcore! Let’s get all these devs in and let’s make it as good as we can.’

Zombie studios is first and foremost a PC dev, but they have released games for the 360 first and the PS3 later. They already have a PS4 game announced, and are probably just waiting for the Durango unveil to confirm that it will get a version of Blacklight as well.

He knows Durango and probably has a dev kit. He is under MS NDA.

He praises a lot the PS4, but says MS is going on a different route, probably more focused on apps and features.

If the difference on the specs is not that big, and the games perform similar (but with a small advantage to the PS4) I still think MS has a good fighting chance.

to announce early? sure it does... so yea, agree to disagree... but it sure is not "tin foil"

it's business

many != all

I don't think MS will be spreading the technical details among all the existing (or most of) indie devs. I'm not defending MS but I don't think MS is doing it all wrong by not attending this GDC and realesing their new platform, which it still hasn't been announced yet.

I don't want to look like a fool but, did Sony approach most of the indie devs before the PS4 announcement and they talked about how good the things they knew about it? I'm just asking.

Actually, we're hearing from the indie developers who are at the biggest development conference in the industry. The fact that the vibe on MS is negative (going by the PA article) is kind of important.

but what I got from the article was that Sony and Nintendo changing and Microsoft is not talking. A lot of the negative is from what Microsoft did this generation. Sony in the past year change themselves.

I would agree with that. But doesn't that paint a somewhat bleak picture of Microsoft's treatment of indies moving forward if the best anyone can say is, "Well I hope they change their ways"?

That is not the narrative though. I don't see anyone saying, " I can't officially comment but we're really excited with the changes MS have made." They either say:

1) Don't know

or

2) MS is going off in a different direction than Sony

Perhaps it will end up being much ado about nothing, but I find it strange considering we are about 6 to 8 months from launch.

Yeah there are plenty interviews with Adam Boyes. You should check them out. Sony has been super aggressively in pursuing the indie market for awhile.

What is so laughable about what he said? The PS3 was a huge fuck up financially for Sony. Yeah, yeah, it gave us some great games, but that's strictly irrelevant at the end of day at Sony HQ.

They want a nice clean slate to start again and make this generation better than the last, hell EVERY one of the big 3 should look at it from that perspective.

You're wrong. Zombie Studios said he has friends working with Microsoft and he was under THEIR NDA... they're not working with MS at all...

He said: "I’m under their NDA flag".
