Dark Souls 2 Engine Created with Next-Gen in Mind

Does DS2 look worse than DS1 ?

DS1 had gorgeous areas on many occasions(undead burg, parish, anor londo and greatly detailed enemies and armors.Does DS2 take a step back from that ?

That reveal demo definitely looked better than DS1, however.

After just starting to play DeS, it is easily one of the ugliest games ever.

But after about 20 minutes, you forget about it and get sucked into the game. You wont even notice the jaggies after you start playing...

Exactly, graphics were never Souls games strongest feature.

What a horribly looking POS

Believe me. No one knows what the heck they are doing with those screencaps. The videos DONT SHOW ANY OF THAT

Yep that looks awesome as the camera clips through the terrible looking ground...static images do make it look worse but it really doesn't look any better in motion

Maybe I'm wrong, but they don't seem very technically competent. I Love Dark Souls, its a masterpiece in game design but there are a lot of thing I didn't get like the crazy physics and the PC port.

I would rather play a game with the ugliest graphics ever with good gameplay over something that looks beautiful with little substance (*cough*ARR*cough*)

You could always just skip the parts where you buy it on a sub-par system and get it for PC.

But then I'd have to not buy Dark Souls 2 when Dark Souls 2 is out, and that's just not happening. I'll gladly pick up the PC version and PS4 version when they come out, but I need it in my veins asap.

a 2d skybox and the actual geometry up close looks hideously last gen, psp quality
the castle looks nice though from afar

Lots of nice shadows playing across the surfaces, cloth animations wind blowing dust. It creates a great atmosphere like previous souls games have. And they have a fantastic art style - hopefully PC/next gen will properly expose it, like durante's PC version of dark souls

Looks great. Love all of the motion and liveliness. It's much better looking than a lot of the other lifeless looking shit we get that just focused on screenshot quality.

Yeah, atmosphere was a bigger focus than graphics ever were and that's to FROM's credit.

But they knew how to hide the shortcomings in DS, it was dark and had a strong art direction, not trying to bite much more than it could chew.

I'm do doubting that the engine has the features, but here is like someone forgot to turn it on, or something.

I picked up on that from the IGN "documentary".

Wonder if it means we will get next-gen versions?

Doesn't matter though. I need to be in when the community starts discovering the game at day one.

Look at the rock textures on the left... I love the Souls games (see my avatar), but graphics are not their strong suit.

Guess that means I won't be able to run Dark Souls 2 on my laptop when it comes out, even though I can run the first... that was my plan, since I've been PS3-less for quite some time. I guess I'll get the director's cut on PS4 when I get that.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the PC version of Dark Souls II doesn't look as good as Dark Souls: PTDE. The quality of the original texture assets in that game were so high, they were just hidden behind the console resolution until Durante came along.

Where are the PC screens/footage/release date, FROM?

i actually sent them a message on face and they said they will announce the date when they are sure its not going to change anymore, which to me, sounds like bad news. If its been changing a lot then that means its going to be delayed and i really hope its not in may

This makes it even more perplexing. Is that a tacit admission they want to a double dip down the road?

Yes. A lot of developers will be doing this. Nothing illegal about it though.

Buy on PC like me and we won't have to worry about double dipping and what not. We'll always have the most up to date version.

I see people saying the game looks worse than DS1... But in motion I just don't see it. Lightning looks better, effects look better, cloth physics look better as well. I'm still waiting for good PC footage to judge the textures though.

So much hyperbole and troll baiting in Dark Souls threads. Screenshots don't really mean shit anymore, to me at least. Anyone with a PC can make Crysis look like complete garbage or the second coming on the same system.

It's the same with Dark Souls, the key difference is that Dark Souls can't look like the second coming until you mod the PC version. Only then does all of FROM's work become apparent; and that work is goddamned gorgeous.

But the console versions were a mess technically, in just about every regard. PSP bad though? Come the fuck on...

What Durante did with Dark Souls PC was amazing to behold. Just imagine what tweaks he will do for DS2! The PC version will be the main version to get if you want the great gameplay and looks.

Also, does this Next-Gen engine pretty much suggest PS4/XB1 version in the future?

The camera doesn't clip through the ground. You can clearly see it ride up over the edge.

So we are basing this game's looks off one terrible screenshot?

The Dark Souls total conversion for Jedi Academy is lookin' great!
Ok, this one got me.

Anyway, 2 things:

1) Their new engine likely do support "next gen" (current?) features.
But it seems they are either reusing assets, or chose to keep using low def textures (terrain/plants mainly) for some of the more open/complex environments.

IF that helps to keep a steady framerate, that's a good compromise. After all, this is an online game, so there must be a balance between visuals vs performance.

2) IF the PC version also have those low textures (which is not clear yet), then the Mod community will be quite busy fixing that in the next months. Something to keep in mind, while chosing versions.

I think the game will be 60 FPS and have an adjustable resolution by default. Don't see why people expect Durante to do the company's work for them.

Dark Souls II is a game where it literally looks like two different games, depending on whether you are looking at photos or video. Seriously, the video footage looks so much better than the photos. That latest documentary proves that to me. None of the photos look that good. I'm not sure why that is, but perhaps the photos are only showcasing the bland textures while the videos actually show the effects and lighting engine at work. I don't know.

Yep, which is a shame. The quality of the assets in Dark Souls was insane, and I bet it even blew some minds at from to look at some downsampled screenshots.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous on PC.

Terrible I say

What if the lighting is limited to indoor areas? It's mostly outdoor areas who look pretty flat.

I don't know what to believe.

If DSfix didn't exist, there would only be crappy screenshots of Dark Souls. All we have are screenshots taken from terrible angles, with terrible content, as per usual from FROMsoft. You're assertion really makes no sense given the facts of how Dark Souls looks running stock on a PC, or Xbox360/PS3 for that matter.

The way they look with DSfix is the way they should have been supposed to look like on PC out of the box, like every other PC game out there. From screwed that up unfortunately.

Again: No, they didn't suck. Browse the PC screenshot thread for stunning Dark Souls shots.

It looks great, and quite a bit better than Dark Souls 1.

Dark Souls and Demon's souls had some great locations and atmosphere. Maybe on a technical level they are not impressive, but they make up for it with great ambience and such.
