The very first area you walk into from the start is so dark that you have to move slowly or you'll fall to your death, luckily it's pretty short.

Got to the chariot boss, wasn't really sure what to do and ended up getting gibbed.

You are not playing properly. Defensse gets you far in the game and look for patterns on enemies. Its not that hard once you wrap your head around it.

Got some nice dragon knight robes, then proceeded to roll into a pit at the chariot boss.

It's really great and there are lots of little changes I've noticed that are an improvement over dark souls. Just hard to get into it fully when the time with it is so short.
