I understand that they don't want helper phantoms to be over-leveled, but they should extend the range to allow lower soul level players to help out. Gear is ultimately far more significant, anyway. I cannot seem to get summoned anywhere at SL40. :( Most luck I've had is Queelag and even there it's fairly rare.
I think the three co-op focused Covenants should allow that (the Way of the White, the Warriors of the Sun, the Boob Guard), either remove the level restriction or let the three Covenants have double the level range.

Right now I'm only in the Sunbros Covenant for the lightning spell.

Don't have the shield, soul level 44. Which bonfire do you mean? There are 3 in Londo.
The one in the room near the staircase with SunBro. I found my summons there at 47, but it seems like I was on the low end for that fight, you may have to level a little bit more to find more signs. The shield is made using more or less any +10 shield and the soul from the butterfly, doesnt have much physical defense but 80% magical and a ranged attack. I mainly focused on using combustion spells on the Skinny guy and the shield on the fat one

wow. got to the depths. did okay. then the butcher dude slams me down and whacks me to death - no ability to block and protect myself. /rage quit.

I know I'm early on but wow. What a piece of shittt!

Beat the game.

NG+ seems even more broken for mages. Enemies seem about 3x stronger, but MagAdjust is still capped at 240. That combined with no story incentive, I'm done. Good game, but annoying/pointless stress points that force you to travel through 5 minutes of shit to retry. That's flawed gameplay design.

Good progress today. Finally took out the Bell Gargoyles after 2 days of frustration, swatted the Butterfly and made it down to meet my next challenge: Capra Demon. He's already raped me a few times. I still haven't beaten that short knight with the big ass club at the bottom of the watchtower in Undead Burg so I may do that first since I want to explore Darkroot Basin.

Gotta question, on new game+, to go after all the trophies should I be playing on NG+ or a fresh start? Didn't know if it's harder or easier to do it that way.

Ahh ok. Hmm +5 lightning weapon or +15 standard for my 1st playthrough. Making slabs a 1 per playthrough item is harsh =\

I would recommend going with Lightning instead, if you want pure damage output. I was a DEX build myself and intended on taking the Iaito to +15, but the scaling doesn't work out in its favor unless you have a very high DEX (apparently something like 50-60 before it starts to match up).

If you're planning on going to high levels then ultimately the +15 is better since elemental weapons don't scale, but otherwise going Lightning is your best bet. It would be an easier choice if the elemental weapons took out the additional effects like bleeding, but the fact that they keep them basically makes it a no-brainer (particularly bleeding which just obliterates most enemies in the game). You can't buff or enchant an elemental weapon but so few enemies seem resistant to lightning anyway that you don't really need it to have another attack.

NG+.

Just do things differently, like joining the Gravelord/Darkwraith covenants if you didn't already.

Why's that? Also about the weapon upgrading... is it possible to get all the upgrade trophies on 1-2 playthroughs? I don't really understand what it means by "upgrade all weapons through lightning reinforcement, magic reinforcement, etc." I mean I kind of do I'm just not sure exactly how.

It takes 3 playthroughs

There are trophies for actually joining those covenants? You don't have to join them to get the trophy just discover them.

How else are you going to get the weapons/miracles/etc from them if you don't join?

Can you actually go down into the catacombs as soon as you reach Firelink Shrine?

You can go there from the start of the game (post-tutorial that is). The graveyard and Catacombs were the first two areas I visited in Dark Souls. :P

you can get to darkroot via the area near the first smithy or run past big ass club guy. He'll climb up the stairs to get to you, you fall off and run through the door.

I beat capra in 3-4 goes. The key here
is to run up the stairs on the side and kill the rats so you can then focus on him. I found that getting him to follow up the stairs, then you falling down, and him doing the same gives you time to kill him easily. If you get trapped at the start, you're dead

Did anyone else beat Ornstein second? Seems most people are taking him out first, which is understandable. I have to imagine the second phase with Smough is much easier. Ornstein is sort of a dick, but the rewards are just.

Holy crap. There is already a speedrun of the game!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9ymysN3qQ8

The entire first section of the game, right to ringing the first bell in just over 10 minutes!
lmao wow this is ridiculous. He uses the cheesy sword but this is incredibly impressive. Before this video I would have said that getting to the first bell in 10 minutes was impossible.

I barely do any PVP at all but the spear seems absolutely useless. It's great for PVE, but PVE isn't filled with hyper mobile enemies that spend the entire fight strafing back and forth.

It was my favorite weapon in Demons Souls. I didn't do a lot of high level pvp, but level 1-60 it worked really well for me. Being able to attack while defending was very effective.

Fog ring basically makes it useless for pvp in Dark Souls though. :(

I need a weapon recommendation.

Wanderer, level 28.
Strength 16
Dexterity 24
Endurance 19
Everything else at initial values. I was planning on being mostly dex/end build.

Hmm... So I boned my chance of getting Washing Pole by first accidentally killing Shiva and pressing circle on the first question from the cat. (Im not sure if it was Shiva who jumped down the cliff, got 1000 souls :\) I'll probably have to kill the undead merchant and settle for uchigatana. (though I have Iaito already)

Now I don't know what covenant to join or where to go really. Im currently at SL 43 and I don't know should I go New londo ruins, Stray demon, Sen's Fortress or Catacombs next.

I'm surprised you didn't run into guys with the Moonlight Sword. I loved coming up against spear/shield users in Demon's Souls PvP. Think you're safe behind that shield, do you? :P

Lightning Katana

Damn Blight Town gives me a migraine every time... making the game a chore.

Seeing that dragon sword first hand(in the speed run video) makes me lol. Crazy that there are people who probably won't know what it is like to beat Dark Souls without that and grinding at the forest covenant area(at least fresh).

Is it bad that I used the guide to find out that Ornstein drops a ring if killed first and did a suicide run to get it, then die and kill him second to get the smexy armor :)

I am severely disappointed in the weapon upgrades in this game compared to Demon Souls. Lightning weapons over power everything, stat scaling weapons usually pale in comparison. I miss having a character specialize in STR or DEX, with the weapons being somewhat balanced.

If you try to beat Ornstein second then the real Dark Souls begins.

where is quelana? I was in demon ruins but i can't find her, before that i saw nothing.

She's in Blighttown in the swamp; you need a pyro glove of at least +10 to find her. She'll be sitting next to a pillar closest to the rock throwers

haha the same thing happened to me, i thought i was playing the game wrong when i got destroyed against those skeletons.

take a right and go up the stairs , then you'll be on the right path :D

though for fun, just run like hell past all the skeletons and see if you can beat the guy in the cave D:

Magic vs physical was pretty unbalanced once you got to the higher levels... but it's even more insane in Darks Souls... They didn't learn a damn thing. :(

I did Smough second in my first playthrough, and Ornstein second in NG+. Hardest fight in the game so far.
