Dated visuals you still think look amazing

One of my favorite Genesis titles when I was a kid. Shit looked straight of the movie to me back in the day. Same with the Lion King game, but that shit frustrated me more than anything else lol.

I didn't get to play Lion King much, but I was really impressed with what I saw. Disney had a great run on Genesis.

I could be mis-remembering but didn't Disney help with the animation?

I've always heard that as well, and you can tell the animation was done by great talent.

Earthworm Jim also had awesome, quality animation back in the day. Seeing these games were revelations for me back then. It showed how significantly better a side-scroller could look when skilled animators were hired. Even simply things, like making sure the character didn't slide and looked like his footsteps matched his running speed made a significant visual quality difference.

MGS1. Though polygonal, the textures are basically pixel art which look striking and I think beautiful scaled up. It really plays to the ps1's strengths rather than trying to do "realistic" visuals. Maybe they'd say it was supposed to be realistic but the art style remains strong.

I disagree.

MGS1 looked like ass from day 1.
Gameplay was great and story too, but to me, it was never a good looking game.

Now, on topic.
I like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines' graphics.
Mods make it even better!

I just wanted to add this.. this scene is from zwei.. this is the first time you fly in the game... my jaw literally drop when I saw this.. the sunset... the music.. the atmosphere.. it was just amazing!!

I love how they made the environments look in Zwei. It always made it feel like the game is a lot bigger whenever I see the horizon, and it made me wonder what there is to explore beyond the boundary.

well I was going to post Panzer Dragoon Saga. It might look pretty bad in stills, in action it's something else, the game has some really good camera panning that makes it feel all cinematic, compared with FF7/8, the game feels way more advanced and ahead.

Panzer Dragoon Orta looks really good too, it's probably all we will ever get of this world in a more defined 3D look. The art direction of the series was just too good.

METAL SLUG

Surprised that this series hasn't been mentioned yet. I would post an animated gif, but I don't know how to do that :(

I know someone probably mentioned it, but XIII is definitely a game I remember looking great and still kind of has a style I appreciate.

Loved the comic panel death cam.

I keep posting the same Ridge Racer Type 4 gifs every time a similar thread pops up, man it just looks so fucking great to this day. It just has a timeless aesthetic.

"timeless aesthetic"

...

ok.

Another nods for Vagrant Story

This is a great shot. Each pixel in the texture work is seemingly deliberate, kind of like pixel art. A lot of PS1 games shouldn't have their textures filtered when emulated. Look at these textures from MGS1, unfiltered:

So, for all the people who enjoy the aesthetic of Metal Gear Solid, I extracted some textures from the game and dropped them into a scene in Unreal Engine 4 a while ago. The nearest neighbor filtering on the low res textures, rendered with really nice IQ looks ace. The texture work in MGS is actually really nice considering they were working with sub 64x64 textures for most of the game.

The keypad for example would become a blurry mess otherwise.

Dragon Quest 8 for me.

Ugh. It's downright criminal that we're getting a scaled down mobile/3DS port (or is that remake?) instead of the HD remaster that the game truly deserves.

I usually prefer rereleases with support for modern features like trophies/achievements and whatnot. But this is one case where I'm really glad I held on to my PS2 copy. I really should look into how to set up a PS2 emulator to run it on my PC.

I love PS1 textures

Until the camera moves and they start wiggling around

Breath of Fire 3 and 4. Backgrounds don't really hold up, but the fucking sprites, man.

FF7

I know people don't think so but I still love the visuals.

Honestly if a FF7 remake was just making the battle models the world models it'd still look really good. The 3D battle models all look fine for the PS1 era, the rendered backgrounds still hold up, just the character models in the world look out of place.

Dated = style of that time, came be used criticaly.

PS2 games look dated, I think most of the great games look better than anything we get now. The Majority of Nintendo games always look ace, lucasarts adventures, naughty dog and most 2d arcade games look a million miles better than the shit AAA games give us.

This thread is gold and I love you all for appreciating the same things as I do
This thread is just missing some scanlines though :)

FF7

Come on, FF7 looked shit at the time apart from the big spell call things. Backdrops were brilliant but the cutscenes were awful. Surprised that people where impressed, especially as 6 was better an didn't need any of that.

I cant find a good picture but the Wonderland world in Kingdom Hearts amazed me.
I don't know why they just made the world square rooms and clearly painted the backgrounds on the walls. I figured it was either graphic limitations or was for style, but regardless it still has a great unique look to it.
You might be able to make an argument for a couple areas in Kingdom Hearts, but Wonderland looks like a kid's shoebox diorama. I played it last year and I couldn't get over how many favors my memory had been doing for that game's visuals.

Every time I see a Quake II screenshot it has too much detail - always played in low-detail as it was easier to see other players in deathmatch :)
