Daymare 1998 finally arrives on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today.

Daymare: 1998 started out life as Resident Evil 2 Reborn when it was announced in July 2015. That was just a month before Capcom revealed its own Resident Evil 2 remake and forced Italian indie studio Invader Games to shut down its fan-made homage.

RE fan excited for Daymare 1998 ?

Didn't they got help from CAPCOM when seeing the original project for a remake of RE2? CAPCOM obviously asked them to shut down the project but helped them somehow with DAYMARE 1998 in place, even kept some idea from the original project into RE2 remake like LEON holding the flashlight and his gun at the same time (or coincidence?).

Heard that from FRENCH fan site if i recall back in early 2020.

About DAYMARE is it any good? Seemed like a clone or RE that doesn't have anything particular (neither a budget for instance)

Wasn't that something that Capcom wanted to do since RE4 and finally was able to implement?

The Daymare team visited Capcom studios in Japan and were credited as special thanks on RE2R, but I doubt that Leon holding the flashlight with the gun was because of them. Also, interesting that 3 former Capcom members joined in the making of this game.

That's more like it, you're right and it make more sense that way, it always amazed me how many ideas came from early betas of RE1 , 1.5 , 2 and got used way later in future titles, always bet on CAPCOM to use stuff they thought of years and years ago, nothing is wasted.

The hilarious "50% off" release sale putting it at $26.76 looks like a good price for it. They're kidding themselves with that non-sale price of $53.49 CND.

I will wait for reviews to hear about length and performance before I purchase.

Bought this the other night and have put in about 3 hours. Currently in the middle/end of Chapter 2.

Some thoughts so far if other people are on the fence and this game is still on your radar.

Pros
  • Graphics are pretty good for what it is. Interiors are better than exteriors. I like the enemy design so far.
  • Aiming and gun mechanics are good
  • Paul Haddad does the voice of the Cleaner (narrator) (Original Leon in RE2, RIP)
  • Sound design is fantastic so far, the title screen music is great and I hope to hear more as I keep playing. Sound effects sound good and natural.
  • Generous check point system
  • Puzzles are sometimes really well thought out

Cons:
  • Various levels of jank, a bit of clipping, not super offensive but like PS3/360 levels of clipping.
  • The translation is pretty bad in that it's way too wordy. Some of the files are incredibly long and the font on the TV is tiny as hell. Squinting my eyes and reading it the other night, felt like I was hallucinating, lol. The characters in cutscenes can go on really long diatribes and it's just kind of embarrassing and redundant.
  • The guy with the scar on his head has been flat out awful in his delivery of lines. It's like he's whispering but trying to be loud. Every time he talks I just roll my eyes.
  • The story itself is sometimes delivered really well, but most of the time it's just annoyingly bad.
  • Picking up items can be a bit too sensitive in actually allowing you to pick the item up.
  • Shotgun seems to have not much spread. Must not be buck shot.
  • Puzzles sometimes make no sense whatsoever because of the translation/lack of direction. I've utilized google for 2 of them and I honestly don't care. It's not worth the time to aimlessly go at a puzzle in this game.

Some things to keep in mind. I'm playing on 'Classic 90s Mode' and on 'Daymare' difficulty. Hardest way to play the game. Some comments online said that Normal mode is too easy and Easy mode is like baby mode. So far it really isn't that tough. 'Modern Take Mode' streamlines the reload mechanic. In this game you have to reload the actual clip in your inventory. If you don't have a clip with ammo in it your character can't reload, and at that point you're as good as dead if you're near an enemy. The checkpoint system is honestly the only reason I continue to play, it's really generous. If dying sent you back to the beginning of the chapter I doubt I'd ever finish the game. I also need to remember to change the voice acting to Italian, it might be really good and give it an Italian 70s horror type vibe.

It's still $40 on the PSN which is a bit steep if you're on a budget and if you are, I wouldn't go for it. Get something like ZombiU for $10 if you want a new survival horror game. If you can afford $40 without thinking and are a fanatic over classic era RE then it's probably worth checking out, even though it doesn't feel or play like a classic era RE game. It plays/feels like an early beta of RE2 remake. I do have a lot of respect for Invader Studios though for making the game and I hope they made some money off of it. They 100% could make a really solid survival horror game with more resources and polish.

Maybe I will give to this a go

I'll be honest, I haven't played it in like a week. I'm actually at a pretty cool spot in the game (the hospital), real atmospheric, etc. Game is still frustrating though. I plan on going back and finishing it at some point. Just don't want you to spend $40 and be super disappointed by it.

I'll wait for sale then
Thanks

How is the shooting in the game? I've had a look at some YouTube vids and it seems a bit spongy. Do headshots pop or is it alway the same amount of bullets to down enemies regardless of where you shoot them? I've been spoilt by Capcom critical hit chance.

A friend of mine is a huge Resi fan (he platinumed RE1-4 on the PS4), but even he was complaining about the game looking low budget and being frustrating in some areas. I haven't played it (and likely never will), but they probably had a much smaller budget even than spin-off RE games like Revelations.

Combat isn't bad and one of the recent updates listed something along the lines of combat being more effective. I think maybe bullets have more weight or something. It feels somewhat spongy but no worse than something like RE6.
Is this game any good? in terms of story, is it engaging in anyway?
The story isn't terrible but the script is pretty bad. It's due to translation I'm sure, the dialogue is super wordy, it's kind of funny how the long some of the cutscenes drag on for. Some of the files are insanely long, like far too long. It's nice to have the info but the font is real small and playing it in the dark while reading the screen was disorienting.

It's not a terrible game by any means and I really don't want to shit all over the teams efforts because it's clear that they were really trying to make a solid title with limited resources. Graphics are fine for what it is, the sound design is fantastic, no complaints there. Enemy design is cool.

Puzzles are neat too but some of them are way too cryptic. They have clues here and there but it's just not worth the head scratching that is involved with some of them, I've utilized google for a few because I just don't have time to solve them myself.
Daymare 1998 Puzzles Guide – How to Solve All Puzzles (gameshedge.com)

It's just a janky game and hard to recommend for $40, but I understand that the price hasn't lowered because the team probably wants to earn a profit. If you can afford it and won't be upset over $40 if you don't like the game, then by all means check it out. Definitely don't get it though if you're on a tight budget, not worth it.

I would love for them to make another game and hire on someone who can do a better translation job. The talent is there they just need to get a better story and to dumb it up a bit with the puzzles.

So as this was given out for free on GOG I decided to give it a whirl.

I only played most of chapter one so far, about an hour.

I...am pleasantly surprised? It is basically Resident Evil, does not seem to be any worse than something like RE5.

I like the interface, how inventory uses actual handheld device and you can even move when using it.
And so far all the texts found have been more interesting than the trash usually found in Resi games. In fact the whole story setup seems more interesting than Resi, with the Japanese wanting to take revenge for Hiroshima and sending early bio weapon to US via submarine, but failing, and thus giving US the weapon to research in the future..

Gameplay is fine too, nothing groundbreaking, but perfectly functional. Puzzles have been decent, not annoyingly obtuse (I really hated some of the puzzles in Signalis). Graphics is nice, considering - lighting effects look great and there is no washed out black like in some RE games. Runs perfectly smoothly, 60fps in 4K maxed with my GPU being used from like 40%.

One thing I do not like is that there is no apparent way to know when was the last checkpoint made if I miss the little diskette icon.

I am definitely gonna play more.

Aaaand finished.

Well this was awesome.

12 hours of sweet well designed Resident Evil-like goodness, with lore and story that actually made me more interested than most Resident Evils managed. It is still B-movie stuff of course, but competent. It is only really let down in cutscenes, which have amateurish direction and not-great character models, but that can be forgiven considering that this game was made by core team of like 12 Italians.

I don't really have a lot to complain about here - gameplay was fun throughout, puzzles were good (with one exception, for which I needed a guide and still do not really understand it even with a guide), graphics was good enough, soundscape is fantastic. I enjoyed this quite a bit more than Resi 3 Remake, and even than Resi 2 Remake.

Very solid effort, 8/10 from me and I look forward to whatever these guys make next.

Might have to give this another go, go it for PS4 when it released but it looked bad PQ wise.
I understand Denton Denton you are playing on PC so you're definitely playing it at a higher resolution and framerate.
I'm not even sure what it ran at on the PS4 Pro as no one covered it but it looks bad.

I play PC version from GOG which gave it out for free a month ago or so back.
So I played in 4K 60fps and I do not think I have ever seen a framedrop or a stutter and it never crashed either. Played great.
