DC announces that Green Lantern will be gay

You're acting as if DC didn't know this would be a story. Of COURSE they did. They clearly planned for this to make headlines and gather attention, because both DC and Marvel take every chance they get for mainstream press.

And for the record, they specifically said "a major, iconic, male." They built this up as if it were an A-lister.

Nonsense. When DC wants a splash they make one. This is Bleeding Cool's doing, but alas the jaded public will jump at any chance to see the worst in people.

Anyone not seeing this as a positive for gay kids is ... pretty fucked.

Hey, I'm down with this. They're taking a lot of chances with Earth 2, and I'm cool with this. I'm sure plenty of neckbeards will be up in arms over this.

For some reason, the neckbeard community is strangely prejudicial.

How many times has the DC Universe been rebooted? What happened this time?

This isn't new. The DC was rebooted after Flashpoint. It's now The New 52.

For all the "liberal" talk, you've probably realized by now that nerds tend to be very, very, very insecure about issues dealing with masculinity and sexuality. Homophobia is par for the course.

How does Alan Scott exist in the same universe as Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps? I mean the magic flame that powers Alan Scott's ring has nothing to do with the GL Corps, right?

Flashpoint

Right now he doesnt....he is only in Earth 2....but PowerGirl(SuperGirl) and Huntress(Robin) made the jump to the main universe so it wouldnt surprise me too much if Alan Scott eventually entered the main continuity......but right now he is just Earth 2 fodder.

The green flame is chaotic magic gather by the guardians and sent out into the universe with the thought it won't cause any trouble.

I have noticed this, and it's really unfortunate. Their insecurities have created an incredibly hostile environment for plenty of groups (people of color, women, and homosexuals alike).

Kotaku's recent "Straight White Male is the easiest difficulty setting in life" article and its comments are evidence that many straight white male nerds are overly threatened by other groups of people.

In the case of Earth 2, he doesn't. Earth 2 is set in Earth 2. The rest of New 52 is set in Earth 1.

I don't agree. Yeah, if a kid wants to read about a gay hero, they've got them and can read about them. Hell i will probably read stuff with Scott now just cause of that.

But I mean really now, being pushed to alternate universes and relatively minor characters doesn't fit well with the idea that GBLT can be just like anyone else.

I'm not saying this is bad news, or that it should've been an A-list hero. "Iconic" was a word used. I suppose Scott is iconic in a way, but are people really going to read about him?

Nerds everywhere were frothing at the mouth when Peter Parker was killed in Ultimate Spider-Man and replaced with a half black, half hispanic kid. Straight white male nerds are simply not ready for Kyle Rayner or Hal Jordan to be gay.

DC is just trying to create diversity without upsetting the same demanding audience that pays their salaries.

Nerds are simply not a very accepting crowd. It's incredibly sad (and frankly pathetic).

No one in the public knows or cares about the difference. That's the entire point of this sort of media stunt.

And that's what I don't like about it. It's a media stunt.

Nonsense. When DC wants a splash they make one. This is Bleeding Cool's doing, but alas the jaded public will jump at any chance to see the worst in people.

If they didn't want a splash, they wouldn't have announced it a month before the book hit and then waited two weeks to reveal who the character is. They would have just published the comic and let it speak for itself. DC knew exactly what they were getting into.

Anyone not seeing this as a positive for gay kids is ... pretty fucked.

And that's the crazy part, because having more gay characters is an undeniable good thing. But seeing it played into a big media story always makes me super sick of the whole thing, and I wish people could just put out their comic books without saying "Hey, look at how diverse we are now, please pay attention to us."

I haven't touched the actual Bleeding Cool article yet, because I'm not looking forward to reading the comments. Are they just as insensitive and close-minded as the comments for the new Ultimate Spider-Man?

Thought it was going to be Flash

Jay Garrick was already in issue 1. They would have announced this a month ago if it was going to be him.

Honestly NO.
Im probably gonna abandon Earth 2 after issue 2, i just want to see what GL and The Flash of Earth 2 are like, but without Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, i dont see Earth 2 being particularly interesting for me.

Everybody saying Kyle, it's funny that according to Circle of Fire Kyle has a subconscious crush on Wally.

Wally and Kyle would make a great couple.

The whole point of Earth 2 is to make the JSA characters shine. To me, that's more appealing than a boring Trinity book.

They are best friends. Why can't two guys be best friends anymore? :(

Why can't two best friends fall in love?

We already have two characters that are the bestest friends and that's all: Booster Gold and Ted Kord. And Max Lord ruined that by shooting Ted in the face.

I see........yup im not going to bother after issue 2.
My fix of Earth 2 will come from PowerGirl and Huntress...lovely chemistry between those 2 so far.

I'm honestly disappointed that the gay character isn't...

Plastic Man.

The characterization potential in that would have been astounding.

Batman should of been gay. the relationship with Robin would of been great.

This pisses me off because I loved the JSA stories in the decade before the reboot, and this means no Jade or Obsidian.

Funnily enough, it also means that DC retconned out one of their first gay characters in order to do this.

You think they will go that extreme and pessimistic?

After the treatment of the trinity, I woulnt be at all shocked if that's the way things went down. If they do go down that route, hopefully it ends up cleaner than marvels version.

I wonder how this will get translated into the DC Animated Universe

Jesus DC has too many fucking universes and multiple characters playing the same fucking character/powers

Green Lantern - Earth 1 - White, Straight
Green Lantern - Earth 2 - White, Gay
Green Lantern - DCAU - Black, Straight
Green Lantern - DCM(Movie)U - White, Meta

That makes sense, hope they don't go that route though. Wish someone would ask Robinson what direction he plans on going.

Youre making this more complicated than it should be. The black green lantern exists in comics too. Likewise, hal and kyle exists in the DCAU as well(in fact, kyle was the first one seen). They have a different continuity, but it isn't a big deal

they're not the same Green Lantern...

No Shit!

Do you think the public at large knows this

All they will see is Green Lantern is GAY! headlines

No one is gonna go which version/alias

WB is gonna have shit storm for Green Lantern 2: Electric Boogaloo Jazz Hands Edition if it ever gets made

It's inspiring to see how far we've come. Used to be, comics did not have any gay characters. Now, DC is proudly introducing a gay superhero... in an alternate universe because let's not get crazy here.

In the old universe, his son was gay. They just trade one for another.

Also, if the character is a hit in this universe then they are more likely to introduce more gay high profile characters in the main books. It makes sense to me. DC is a business and they want to make money first and foremost.
