Don't think it's been announced anywhere but Dwayne McDuffie just confirmed on his Facebook page that he's writing the All-Star Superman animated movie.

Does anyone know a good site with news for upcoming DC/Marvel animated movies etc?

for example sites like this

http://www.superherohype.com/
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/

Thanks in advance

There doesn't seem to be a site especially since DC doesn't really officially announce more than 1 or 2 at a time. Though this is the first time we know the next year's line-up way in advance.

Anyhow, after our little Red Hood break, its time to get this back on track with last year's Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

I can't believe this is almost over, kind of makes me sad, but gives me time to start thinking of my next project.

Anyhow, just finished watching Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and generally give it some time to digest before posting, but had some thoughts in my head so figured why not.

I know this movie tends to be mixed here on GAF, but I personally love it. Am I giving away the rest of my comments already? :lol

To me, of all the DCUA and even the Marvel ones, this is the movie that most feels like a comic book come to life.

I'm not saying its the best of the bunch, but of all the movies, it was the one I felt best embodied the spirit of a comic book. It had dialog which wasn't too cheesy, but read like a comic. It had big fights, bigger muscles and it was just fun from beginning to end.

There were tons of standout moments, and of course I love the Superman/Batman composite rocket/missile.

Also I love Ed McGuinness art, I know its big and over the top, but its always been a delight to read anything with his art. It really is over the top and goofy, gives it a charm.

I guess I could gush about the voice acting, but everyone knows I love Kevin so that would just be going over old ground.

This is also the first movie where I noticed a distinct theme and enjoyed it. Especially during some of the bigger fight scenes.

I guess that's one complaint is with so many fight scenes, some of them are rather short or end abruptly. And like the comic, we never really like how Superman/Batman beat Captain Marvel/Hawkman.

All in all, I recommend checking out the movie. As long as you know its lite on plot, heavy on fights.

Next week, we journey beyond to the Planet Hulk.

Look at me, all triple posting in my own thread.

Anyhow, gonna try and hammer out Planet Hulk sometime today.

Was curious... if anyone had any interest in like helping with a podcast or whatever have you for my site. Figured since spent most of this year watching this movie should probably talk about it.

Of the movies list in the OP, which do you consider a MUST see?

What a timely bump, as for the question, guess I can answer that completely at the end of the week.

Here's the review for Planet Hulk.

As is often the case, I have never read the comic on which this movie is based so that doesn't play into my expectations much.

Planet Hulk tells the story of the Hulk finally being cast off the Planet Earth for some unknown reason. We're simply told by a recording of Iron Man that his destructive rampages have been enough, but who knows what he's been up to.

148oxe9.jpg

Anyhow, upon hearing this, the Hulk grows enraged destroying his ship and its navigational coordinates so instead of landing on the peaceful Planet they have set up for him, he instead lands on a planet in turmoil. And thus the movie begins.

The movie could be seen as a Gladiator meets superheroes as the Hulk is the warrior fighting for his freedom, to an evil tyrant who tries his best to squash the rookie upstart.

And for the most part, that drives the middle section of the movie. As we generally get a fight or two, then some exposition than more fighting. Which works perfectly fine for the story, as the characters we are introduced to are interesting and for the most part well-developed. The fights get bigger and more intense as we go.

One problem, I will note with this film is the use of false deaths to build up any type of suspense, I believe there are at least 3 times when the film makes the audience believe the Hulk is dead and a 4th time where another character is presumed to be dead.

So in grand tradition, Hulk does away with any and every challenge thrown his way, but isn't immediately granted freedoms. This causes some ruckus, he escapes and well the King becomes desperate. Which sets up an extended finale, which I don't much care for.

Maybe, it was handled/explained better in the comics, but the "spike" creatures just seemed like a poor plot device in this movie. I wasn't sure how they operated or anything, but eh.

The voice acting in this movie for the most part was pretty solid especially for the Hulk since I'm not accustom to him speaking so much, but I guess he had to since this movie features NO Bruce Banner at all.

It is probably the most visually appealing of the Marvel films (Take that as you will)

All in all, I would recommend checking out Planet Hulk.

And looks like this thread will die with a whimper, but alas at least I finished the marathon!

Ladies and gentlemen, here it is, the final DC/Marvel Animated project to date (not counting Under the Red Hood which we already took a break to do)

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths
justiceleague_crisisontwoearths.jpg

This movie has a somewhat interesting history, as it was originally envisioned as a movie for the DCAU proper, and would bridge the events of Justice LEague and Justice League Unlimited. At some point that idea was dropped, but the script was revisited after this whole DTV thing took off.

They decided to retrofit the script as a standalone movie, but really didn't change too much so that it still serves as a movie that gaps the two shows, and personally that is the best part of the movie.

justice-league-crisis-on-two-earths-20091124010526638_640w.jpg

Aside from perhaps one minor scene (Luthor still being in jail), this movie follows the logic of the two shows perfectly. The League still consists of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern (who is Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart). Hawkgirl is of course off the team do to the events of Starcrossed. We learn how the new Watchtower is built, and more importantly why they started the roster drive at the start of JLU.

So yeah for those who love JL/JLU this is a must-see movie at any rate, but how about the movie on its own?

It is kind of a mixed bag.

123009_crisis.jpg

The story is there, and Owlman's ultimate reveal is pretty cool and dumb at the same time. It also kind of stunk since we had just had Turtles Forever, which had a VERY similar concept (alternate Earths, a villain searching for Earth Prime who wanted to destroy all of existence).

Anyhow, I guess my beef is that well the plot and action are just eh. there hardly is any closure to most of the fight scenes, and even at the end the space Marines arrest the baddies. Batman gets beat-up throughout the course of the movie. And they give J'onnz the most random love interest ever. I mean literally she falls in love with him in like two scenes, and he quickly ditches her at the end.

I did enjoy the Crime Syndicate and while I haven't read enough comics with them in it, I dug the fact that each was pretty much a de-facto mob/mafia/gang stereotype which cam e out pretty well in this movie.

The voices weren't bad, and didn't find any of them offensive or anything. They did the job they were supposed to do.

All in all, if you aren't a fan of JL/JLU (and shame on you!), I would still check it out but it isn't must see TV!

And with that, this marathon is done. well for the most part, I still want to try a podcast on the subject. And of course ranking all the movies should be fun!

Personally, I love this thread but no not post much.

I loved CO2E personally. I didn't know the script history, so I just took it as-is.

THe voices are all OK except Owlman (James Woods) who is awesome.

I agree about the MM love interest.

Personally I thought the Crisis film was the second best DC movie, after Wonder Woman and ahead of Red Hood.

You're right that the action isn't exceptional and the Martian Manhunter love plot is pretty weak but I loved Owlman's motivation.

Maybe I haven't read enough comic books but he was actually able to explain why he wanted to destroy the universe using both a relatively realistic variation of the theory of parallel universes (only the Earth Prime stuff was bunk) and some great nihilistic logic.

His quote "It doesn't matter" at the end is a perfect example of how the script mixes up the two concepts.

I thought Crisis on Two Earth was a very mixed bag. I didn't really care for the characterization or voice used for Batman. The movie's saving grace were Flash, and Superwoman's extremely kinky behavior. :lol

There's at least two scenes I remember where Batman just dives at people without really thinking, which seemed so contrary to the character. The second was that scene where he confronts Owlman, then after a moment of talking, instead of responding to him or pulling a trick, he just charges, "Derp, Batman punch!"

And they were so obsessed with showing how frail he was, and how he could hardly keep up with anyone or do anything, he was practically reduced to "Quirky sidekick the supers keep around for laughs." He has one moment of decent Batman that stuck out (
knockout gas on Superwoman
), which he screwed up by getting cocky. Oh, and technically
tricking Kid Quasar into running to create the portal instead of Flash, which killed him.
But that trick wasn't the type of Batman approach I was used to as a DCAU fan. I would have expected him to come straight out and state the risks.

I don't know, my opinions of it changed, not radically, but use to think it was up there with Wonder Woman. Now I think it is down a few notches, but eh.

I love Owlman, actually.

Exactly, Batman just seemed way too rash. Him being so cocky just seemed way out of character. Batman is someone I imagine does have a high opinion of himself, but not to the point where he would lose an advantage in battle to gloat. That was a total Flash move. It was a fun popcorn flick, I just don't plan on watching it again for awhile.

This thread won't be gone for long. We'll get to talk about Superman/Batman: Apocalypse soon. :D

And I'm thinking of doing Turtles Forever just for the giggles.

Guess, I could also touch on The Spectre/Jonah Hex short

I saw Batman: Under the Red Hood and really enjoyed it. I didn't really know that much about it except for the basics
Jason Todd getting killed and then coming back to life as the Red Hood
, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how exciting and thoughtful the movie was. It gave some good insight into Batman's moral code, his relationship with his sidekicks, and how he is affected by his past failures. The action was also really exciting and pretty brutal as well, it was a hard PG-13 for sure. It does have a few problems. For one, the tone seemed to shift all the time. It goes from goofy to super serious too often. Also how the hell did Batman
know Joker was going to set those people on fire? There's no way he has fire retardant just in the cargo hold of his batplane at all times.

On a side note, what other DC/Marvel animated movies are worth checking out? I've seen Mask of the Phantasm, New Frontier, Gotham Knight, Doomsday, Return of the Joker, and Ultimate Avengers.

I just watched Superman: Doomsday. The only other DC movie I've seen is Batman Beyond, which was amazing and life changing. I also saw the first Batman one.

Holy shit! Doomsday was awesome. I love that it didn't hold back be it violence or adult themes, I didn't realize it was PG13 until after I finished watching it so it was a nice surprise. The action was intense and the story was more interesting than I expected. Luther was really entertaining and crazy - "Who's your daddy?" :lol

I'm going to watch all the movies in the order they were released; DC at least. Cartoons for adults <3

If you liked Superman: Doomsday, I think you will be in for a real treat with some of the other movies, but probably avoid the other Superman movie. :lol

My favorite recent movie was Superman Batman Public Enemies. Good action and story. Liked the animation style better than the other movies.

I watched Justice League New Frontier; it was good but nothing too special. The beginning surprised me with the
first person gunshot suicide and then when the soldier was shot in the head
but story-wise it was pretty safe and the villain - an island stuffed with endless dinosaurs - was kinda silly. Wasn't bad but eh.

I know these are pre-Doomsday & the latest fleet of movies but for some reason I watched Batman vs Dracula :lol. Not as bad as I expected but again just candy. Also watched Batman and the Mystery of the Batwoman - I was genuinely surprised. I thought the movie was so obvious and then I thought at this rate it's either exactly who I expect or the twist will be it's not the super obvious choice and the other obvious character - instead it was a rather interesting twist with good action and an entertaining story.
3 Batwomans and the cop was in on it!

Netflix is running out of instant streams so next I'll catch Justice League:Crisis on Two Earths, then the Red Hood dvd which I own and hopefully I'll get my hands on the rest like Superman Batman Public Enemies and Wonder Woman through purchasing on Amazon or waiting on physical netflix. I'm just in a real DC movie mood; I want to see 'em all!

New Frontier suffered greatly from being reduced to 80 minutes. While the story's basically the same, what made the book was the breadth of characters and scenes, most of which are cut. The climax has much more impact when you've spent longer getting there.

I agree with your assessment-- it's just a shame considering the source material.

Batman: Under the Red Hood was undoubtedly my favorite animated DC flick since Mask of the Phantasm. If you guys are looking for some solid Marvel ones, check out the two in Hulk Vs. I quite liked those.

I'm disappointed that Wolverine and the X-men was canceled. I loved the cliff hanger ending.

The Age of Apocalypse. Also I enjoyed watching the burgeoning feelings of Emma Frost for Scott. Very well done.

So much wasted potential. You guys should grab the DVD. Maybe Disney/Marvel will reconsider if we buy enough copies. Lol

I doubt it, since they already have the Wolverine and I believe X-men anime in the pipes so they are already moving on.

I didn't even know these existed. Watched Planet Hulk last night, it was awesome and just waiting for Hulk Vs and Crisis on Two Earths now. Might as well watch the mask of phantasm as I've been meaning to watch it for 15 years now!

Anyone here watched Superman/Batman Apocalypse?

I miss Ironseid. With that said, I thought the new VA for Darkseid was good.

Hey Penguin, was there any mention of the Prep-Time Batman at the end of movie like in the book?

I don't believe there was.
Honestly, I don't remember the comic all that well.
Maybe I should re-read it.

Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adams was a pretty cool short as they have all been.

Really debating picking up the set because I have the other 3 on their other releases, but want to support em so there are more.

Just watched Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and it was ok, I expected a lot more though.

I just watched it last night (redbox finally got it), and I really enjoyed it as the stealth Supergirl film it was. Summer Glau did a wonderful job voicing Kara, and the character development was nice. I also really liked that the final battle, and found it amusing that such a pivotal confrontation took place on a farm in Smallville, USA. :lol

My only major complaint with the film was Darkseid. Where Frank Welker provided a wonderfully cheesy evil voice for the character in the Super Friends, Michael Ironside's Darkseid in Superman TAS sounded inherently evil and incredibly intimidating. Andre Braugher in Apocalypse was just plain boring to listen to, and sounded neither evil nor intimidating. Total miscast, that almost undermined the whole film were it not for Conroy, Daly, and Glau holding it together.

I know DC has said they wouldn't be making anymore films for second tier characters after Green Lantern and Wonder Woman "bombed." But if Apocalypse is anyting to go by, I'm all for the practice of crafting stories around the lesser characters, and then slapping Superman/Batman on the cover if that's what it takes to get them made.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is the pick of the year from me, it just worked on so many levels. I really hope they can do one of these a year with proper voice acting, none of this big name actor billing that does not work and dry lifeless dramas. Batman looked abit funky to me and Darkside voice was abit off otherwise I just loved it. Epic battles, fantastic wonder woman, a great many strong female heroes actually and side stories for a movie under the Batman/Superman label at least. Kinda felt like a JL series reunion and I just loved that. If they ever do anything major with the Flash it has to be the charming JL series one.

Public Service Announcement I guess to remind everyone that DC Showcase Original Animated Shorts is out today highlighted by the Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam extended short.

ok so ive seen just about every single one of these movies except the anime batman, and the one where supes dies. I also just saw the wonder woman one today. I must say if there is a must see its:

Batman Under the Red Hood

Green Lantern First Flight

Wonder Woman (maybe the best of them all no lie)

Hulk VS wolverine/thor

Planet Hulk

Crisis on Infinite Earths (batman is a real dick in this one)

I dont have anything against the other movies but i think these really stand out, marvel needs better execution overall though , hulk vs and planet hulk really left the other efforts in the dust.

Although the only ones I liked where Superman Doomsday, Crisis on Two Earths, and Red Hood, I am always excited for a new DC animated movie!

I just watched Superman Doomsday, I wasn't too stoked. I am really excited about All-Star Superman, Grant Morrison is one of my favorite writers in comics. I really hope they make animated Superman Vs Muhammad Ali, I picked that up and it would be super fun and kitsch.

Also, what's with Marvel not tapping into adaptations of it's more popular storylines? As you can tell with DC it doesn't really mess with your huge A list tentpole features when you put out dvd/bluray features a few times a year. I'd love to see a New X-Men movie or something.

I think Marvel just didn't have the backing of DC/Warner, but I'm hoping things change going forward with Disney as their backers.
