And looks like this thread will die with a whimper, but alas at least I finished the marathon!
Ladies and gentlemen, here it is, the final DC/Marvel Animated project to date (not counting Under the Red Hood which we already took a break to do)
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths
This movie has a somewhat interesting history, as it was originally envisioned as a movie for the DCAU proper, and would bridge the events of Justice LEague and Justice League Unlimited. At some point that idea was dropped, but the script was revisited after this whole DTV thing took off.
They decided to retrofit the script as a standalone movie, but really didn't change too much so that it still serves as a movie that gaps the two shows, and personally that is the best part of the movie.
Aside from perhaps one minor scene (Luthor still being in jail), this movie follows the logic of the two shows perfectly. The League still consists of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern (who is Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart). Hawkgirl is of course off the team do to the events of Starcrossed. We learn how the new Watchtower is built, and more importantly why they started the roster drive at the start of JLU.
So yeah for those who love JL/JLU this is a must-see movie at any rate, but how about the movie on its own?
It is kind of a mixed bag.
The story is there, and Owlman's ultimate reveal is pretty cool and dumb at the same time. It also kind of stunk since we had just had Turtles Forever, which had a VERY similar concept (alternate Earths, a villain searching for Earth Prime who wanted to destroy all of existence).
Anyhow, I guess my beef is that well the plot and action are just eh. there hardly is any closure to most of the fight scenes, and even at the end the space Marines arrest the baddies. Batman gets beat-up throughout the course of the movie. And they give J'onnz the most random love interest ever. I mean literally she falls in love with him in like two scenes, and he quickly ditches her at the end.
I did enjoy the Crime Syndicate and while I haven't read enough comics with them in it, I dug the fact that each was pretty much a de-facto mob/mafia/gang stereotype which cam e out pretty well in this movie.
The voices weren't bad, and didn't find any of them offensive or anything. They did the job they were supposed to do.
All in all, if you aren't a fan of JL/JLU (and shame on you!), I would still check it out but it isn't must see TV!
And with that, this marathon is done. well for the most part, I still want to try a podcast on the subject. And of course ranking all the movies should be fun!
