Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 Discussion

I picked DOAX2 up this afternoon and have sunk a couple hours in so far. So far, it's pretty good. I'd level the same criticism as with DOAX, in that it's a very simple affair without a lot of depth. Except that it does a better job in some key ways:

Volleyball is smarter now. The question going into a match isn't whether you'll win 7-0 or 7-1. The timing is more difficult, the game is faster with quick spikes, and you can't rely on everything going your way as much. Other than that, it's still very similar to the original. But those changes provide some suspense and seem like they'll keep matches from being a monotonous, repetitive exercise in money grinding. We'll see if it maintains any difficulty level through 5, 10, or 20 hours of play.

Other than that, there's a whole lot of extra stuff to do.
--Camera's a nice addition. But the controls aren't changeable and are set to southpaw. ****ing horrible trying to learn that. Still good to have.
--The ladies don't throw your million dollar gifts away anymore. Instead they'll politely return them. Itagaki said that American gamers didn't understand this aspect of the game in the original. And he's right. I considered it a game breaking glitch disguised as game design.
--Jet ski racing is solid. Very reminiscent of Wave Race. I haven't messed with the tricks and it seems like there's only 1 track. Nice addition, good to see it, but not amazing or anything.
--Mini-games... waterslide is fun, butt battle's pretty funny, pool hop races are more exciting than going solo. Though you can still go solo if you prefer that.
--Casino is still very rudimentary. Still I love it. Slots, blackjack, and poker are all good gambling. Roulette not so much, unless you enjoy roulette for some reason.

Nobody was playing online... I'll check in on that later.

Overall it seems like a nice improvement. It's easy to recommend this to anyone who liked the first.

Any questions, ask away.

I heard the music is similar, like they actually reuse a bunch of tracks from the first game.

Is this true? How much of the music is new or old?

Oh, and what are the achievements like?

And when does play-asia ship the Asian version?

Yeah it's a bit of a rip off. Seems like about half the music is lifted from the original. I'd be fine with that if they'd included the Christina Aquilera track again, but they didn't! Yargh. The rest of the music is from a lot of the same artists as were featured in 1.

The only real positive on the music is that you can turn brown sugar off in the casino. Thank god.

Yeah, photos are saveable. Be warned, they'll be shown as the credits roll. So if you have 100 ass shots of Christie and girlfriend or wife happens to be watching the end with you, it could be bad. She will notice and ask.

Can't afford the DSLR yet so I don't know about that. No idea about the Asian ver.

So the volleyball isn't as bad as some reviewers made it seem and perhaps just weaksauce gamers?

Awww sad to hear and very strange. The same music. WTF!

Ipod / WMP11 media sharing for the music.. yes! I'd imagine for what its worth doax2 probably deserves like a 7 or something but its definitely a niche, relaxation type of game. How many achievements and total points? I hope they decided to have unlockable theme/icons since the standard doa4 theme i'm using is kinda dated.

It's essentially the same as the original, with a few tweaks that make it harder. The main problem with the original, in my opinion, was that there was no challenge whatsoever. How the difficulty holds up in this version remains to be seen, but so far I'd call it an improvement. My primary concern is that the difficulty in DOAX2 will not hold up for the 100+ hours that it'd take to collect all the suits. We'll see about that. It's by no means 'broken,' though.

In all seriousness, I really do hope they put up a demo or a finished game trailer on marketplace. I'm very interested in these "ridiculous individual breast physics" people were talking about.

Were you guys really expecting much depth in this game? It's pretty much just for flesh IMO...

Although I'm sure it's fun to play, if the *visuals* aren't as appealing as some gamers were expecting, the game isn't going to sell well.

Here are some impressions by a guy I know who lacks the ability to post at the moment...

How crazy am I?

Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball 2 is a disappointment.

First the pluses!
+Volleyball is improved, more challenging, more entertaining, etc.
+Jetskiing is fun, it's also easy money even when you have no partner.
+The other new minigames are also nice additions
+Breasts are better in general
+More stuff. More clothes, more accessories, etc.
+Camera mode is neat

Now the minuses!
-30 fps... The first game was 60 fps...HUGE BURN
- Casino mode is the same as the first. Silly me for expecting to actually play against the other girls and see their reactions when I smack their asses with a blackjack or something.
- No improvements in atmosphere. Whenever you score a point/win a volleyball match you don't see both girls celebrating or getting pissed off. It's always one girl doing the usual "aww man!" Considering the X360s power Team Ninja could easily put more of the girls into the game. Maybe have them lounging around their hotel room after a long day of independent breast physics.
-You can't zoom in on the cast during volleyball games. I mean the "aww man!" and "Yeah!" parts. This was in the first game I mean wtf?
-English voice acting. Yes you can select Japanese voices but God knows why the US voices are in at all.
-You can play Volleyball and Jetskiing online but you can't use the customized girls from your vacation mode. So no showing off your million dollar swimsuits with the titties all out and matching hat and sandals! Seriously Team Ninja that is just lame.
-Doesn't really look better than the first game. I'm saying this mainly because of the stupid bullshit 30 FPS it is running at. What the **** Team Ninja what...the...****??? Didn't Itagaki say something like "Oh noes we will never go below 60 fps in our games now give me a kiss co-worker." ? **** him and **** this game.
-Asses are still lousy. Hey Japan asses aren't just for making doodoo pornos you know!
+/-It looks like Niki(Zack's girlfriend) isn't in this one. Shame though I know it was only a rumor. :(

Alright I guess that settles it. Those are my impressions after one two-week vacation(with my girl Tina of course).

Tecmo/Team Ninja better be working on the patch but...somehow I doubt it. Regardless I'll still put several hundred hours in just like the last one...
Please though..hear me out..you can leave everything well enough alone just give me my SIXTY ****ING FPS

Edit: Well this wasn't the only game...but it was the one that put me over the edge.

Gears of War is cool by the way. Went through all three difficulties over the weekend solo and boy does my ass hurt. But not as much as it does when I play DoAX2!

30FPS? WTF!

DOA4's so-so visuals were excusable because:
1.) It ran 60FPS
2.) It was a launch game that got delayed about a month
3.) It was the first DOA fighting game that wasn't broken

No excuse for DOAX2 to not be 60FPS, DOAXBV was. I will hunt Itagaki down if Ninja Gaiden 2 isn't 60FPS.

Wait...what?! 30fps? For a game that looks like a high res xbox 1 game?! What the hell happened to team ninja? Very few got as much out of the xbox 1 like they did. Now they seem content with using last gen assets with a few new effects. I fear for ninja gaiden 2 :/

maybe the guy just seriously can't tell the difference ? Seems odd that tecmo's engine would suddenly lose 50% of its preformance to simply render some shadows. ... on a side note even if it is 30 FPS does it really matter for a game like this ? Seriously , does it? you stare at a digital barbie doll with giant independently undulating udders while she wears dozens of swimsuits showing various levels of skin off. You play a bunch of inconsequential minigames to earn fake money to buy more swimsuits for your doll. This isn't DOA the fighting game where 60FPS really helps to make it feel responsive when you do attacks and all that. This is DOA: stare at jiggling breasts edition.

I would be very surprised and disappointed if it was 30fps but for this type of game it won't have a huge impact. Very strange.

Glad to hear someone thinks the volleyball is the same. I bought it for the boobs but I've actually been getting into volleyball a lot recently so I was quite displeased with the reviews calling it "broken."

Also, people need to stop raggin' on this game because of the sex value. Big deal. Buying this is no worse than buying Black if you replace the boobs with bullets. But only one seems to elicit the "get a life" response.

It if really does run at 30FPS, I think we can blame performance hit on the advanced physics engine.:lol

That quote made me shoot diet pepsi out my nose.

By the way, when I was at TGS I could swear that the volleyball and the lounging around was at 60fps, while the jetskiing was at 30fps (because I was like "awwww, I wanted 60fps waverace, you guys suck")

What the heck, 30FPS? I never thought I'd ever have to worry about that with Itagaki... I mean, it's given... TEAM NINJA!!

Maybe this time instead of having delay after delay on release in order to perfect the game they said **** it and just stuck together whatever they had, packaged it, and called it a day.

I'm not all that sensitive about frame-rate, but the jet ski racing does look like it's running at a lower FPS.

More impressions:
Tan lines and sunburns are hot, suit selection is smokin' and the volleyball difficulty ramps up well. It's getting pretty pretty pretty pretty serious on the court. English voice overs are a nice plus over the squealing Japanese voices in 1. Got to race another, far more technical circuit on jet-ski and it's pretty tough. It will require some study, but the controls feel proper. I put Tina in a suit called the Electra and it's like BAM! boobies everywhere, and there's nothing I can do to stop them.

This game has been utterly panned, so I thought I'd write a few nice things here after several hours of play.

The main point is that this is a far, far better game than the original. That's not really saying much. However, it is approaching something resembling a real game. There's actual challenge, a nice variety of things to do, and a well thought out, cohesive structure with a lot of depth if you're given to everything the game offers.

Still, no decent person, no mature adult, no gamer with quote unquote good taste should be remotely interested. If you're sexually immature (or just generally) and don't expect your world to be exploded every time you pop in a new game, this could do the job for you.

The volleyball is vastly improved from the original, even though it's extremely similar. Biggest change is that they've tweaked the range that characters can hit the ball so that the ball is no longer automatically hit to you. This forces constant, strategic adjustment of positioning. It increases the difficulty immensely, but it also turns playing into an active process rather than the methodical, going-through-the-motions of the original. Partners are far more reliable. Depending on your partner's strengths, you can now rely on them to play the net and block, play back court, make their spikes and feints, etc. Rather than fielding and spiking every volley yourself, you now have more options. They've also added a quick spike that is difficult to defend and an easy score when you can pull it off. Overall the game is much improved, although not to the point that it would stand on its own as a real volleyball game.

Jet ski is the other activity and probably the star of the show. Although control has a bit of a learning curve, it's not exactly steep. With a bit of practice and an upgrade to a better handling craft, the game is spectacular. It reminds me exactly of Wave Race. It has that perfect feel of cutting through waves while controlling a jet ski. There's a nice risk/reward dynamic to earning turbo and the difficulty ramps up nicely as you play. Eventually the water will become terribly rough, the courses extremely technical, and the competition gets serious.

The other mini-games are kind of throw-aways that are good for a distraction, but don't offer anything meaningful. Photo mode is actually pretty engaging, as it's not so much about shooting your own porn as it is about mastering your camera and trying to get good shots. Which isn't easy.

The relationship part of the game is kind of convoluted and nebulous, just as in the original, but nevertheless it adds another dimension to the game if you're interested. Think of it like an observation/memory/trial and error kind of puzzle spread across several dozen hours. I don't get it, but whatever.

All in all, the game is very similar to its predecessor. But the additions and tweaks succeed in making it much closer to an actual videogame. I have no idea who I would recommend this to. If there is something seriously wrong with you, you might love this game. I kind of do. It's a nice, chilled out time waster.

Man, I'm seriously tempted to buy this game just because it's so terrible. There's something incredibly appealing to me about such finely polished garbage. The thing is I wouldn't have enough cash for actually good games afterwards :/

Well... I'd like to see that secret pole-dancing sequence in HD, not in YouTube resolution... :( It would be also pretty cool if they've used different animation for different characters too....

There's nothing about this game that's terrible, persay. It's off-kilter, but it's fairly obvious what the intent is behind each portion of the game, and Team Ninja has succeeded at what they set out to do. The controls are tight, there's a decent variety, and the graphics are excellent. It's just that it's a weird game. I wouldn't expect anyone to like it because of that. It's not like anything else and really doesn't fit into the current lexicon of game-dom.

are you sure just because its terrible? :lol :lol

Well, not specifically terrible, but because it's the kind of game where someone seeing it would react "Why the hell?". From what I can deduce, the game has no reason to exist and is essentially lazy Sunday afternoon game for people who find paint peeling too exciting.

It's been a long time since I earned a misplaced badge of honor, and knocking out 1000 gamer points from this game screams such a complete waste of time as to be proud of it. Shame it'd mean missing Viva or Zelda to do so though. Actually that might just bump up the accomplishment a bit.

Oh and I guess I shouldn't forget the creepy perversion aspect, which just makes the whole thing hilarious.

this game is immensely TIME consuming.
just trying to unlock one achievement takes literally dozens of hours.
i mean, god damn, i thought rumble roses xx achievements were time consuming to get, doax2 just blows rrxx away in that respect.

Yeah I can confirm this is a 30 fps game. But for some reason I saw virtually no difference in the animation quality compared to DOAX in 60 fps. I only realized it was 30 fps when I started encoding a video. There is a few places where there is tearing too, it's very rare but it's there. WTF.
This game really looks like a quick cash-in for Team Ninja, even worse than the first DOAX in that matter, especially when Itagaki was saying that they were taking this game more seriously than the first one. And it doesn't look that great, lots of shimmering on the textures especially, it gets annoying quickly.
Volleyball is a tad more interesting than before, but still far from being a simulation. The Jet Ski isn't as bad as in the preview builds, but IMHO it looks bad and the camera being right behind the girl makes it more than difficult to know what's in front of us...
The rest isn't really that interesting and makes the game more complex than the first one. I really like DOAX1 because it was simple enough to really be relaxing, DOAX2 being more complex doesn't make me want to just put the DVD in the drive when I have one free hour.

So true, except I don't like the jet ski at all. This game really let me down. It could have been huge, but Team ****ing Ninja has been ****ing lazy.

Where is the "avoid the crabs" minigame? I don't see it?

I've been playing a bit of this game recently, and I think it's definitely better than the original, which held my attention for a few days and then got incredibly boring. The volleyball has been improved and is a little more challenging, although it's still not at the level of Beach Spikers and Outlaw Vollyeball. The jetski races are fun enough, too, and the other added minigames give you more to do when you don't have a partner to play volleyball with.

Ultimately, I think this game will also get old too, but not as quickly. I do find it relaxing playing it, so I'm not going to be selling it off and can see myself loading it up every once in a while after I'm done playing through it enough times.

Also it goes at 30fps?! I didn't even notice!

I think this game looks much better than just a high-res DOAX1. I guess Team Ninja cared more about releasing the game on time than to polish this title up and make it an actual sequel. At least they'll be using most of their time on NG2 now.
