Dead Space 2 PS3 Multiplayer Beta Invites Going Out - [Update2: More Going Out 9/29]

I just got my beta code tonight and played a bit. It was pretty fun, but it seems pretty heavily stacked in favor of the necromorphs. Of all the matches I played, I only saw the humans win once.

I think you can tell that a game is balanced by people calling both sides favored. I never really have a problem with either, but both sides require a ton of teamwork.

Also, Codecow, I think you owe me a new PS3. I've been playing so much of this damned beta to get to #6 on the leaderboard that I think I fucked my system. It just stopped in the middle of a match a few hours ago and the red light started blinking on my system. When I turned it back on, it went green for a second then flashed both the red and green lights at the same time before reverting back to the blinking red light.

sorry to hear that T_T

Eh, it depends on the team most of the time I think. I won most of the games I played as both sides by teaming up and ambushing a lot.

Just played my first match.
Holy shit.
This is fun :D
Took me a bit to get the hang of it, but once I did, I was having a blast!
Ended up getting 13-0 in my first match for the Human side! :D
That's not too high, but I was at the top of my team :)

Having probably played 40-50 matches, I'd guess that I saw the necromorphs win maybe 15% of the time. I think teamwork is just way more natural with the human side, even without voice chatting.

Yea, I'd have to agree. It think if they made the necromorphs a little more powerful, game would be perfect.

still no code :(
Try signing up twice. That's what I did (with two emails and USA as my country the second time) and even though I signed up via my own non-American facebook account, it still got through :D

Edit: Oh, signups are now closed :(

Very chaotic :D Had pretty much no idea what I was doing. Got like 3 kills, 25 deaths as Necromorphs :lol Humans won in the end and when it was their turn to be Necromorphs, we barely even got out of the safe room before the timer reached zero xD

That sucks. On my original PS3 the drive crapped out right when I was before the final boss in UC2, that pissed me off.

There is a group of guys who plays the game for several hours every day to balance it now. We have made some changes based on beta feedback and had to re-tweak balance because of it.

We're shooting for roughly 1:1 with close games on both sides for each match on each map (provided both sides are playing properly). If you're not playing the objectives or lone wolfing you'll get raped 100% if the other team is on point.

Case in point (as the people on here who played against my team can tell you) we don't lose as either side :D

would be awesome to play against your team since me and some other gaffers havent lost a single round in days and have never really been challenged. always breaks down to essentially spawn camping them when we're necro to only having 1 or 2 deaths total when we're humans, basically a routine at this point:D

I'd be curious to see if you're still having issues after our server restart at 5:30 PM PST on Oct 1. In theory this should have fixed the fail to joins (2nd attempt).

K, I had some problems connecting right around then but was fine afterwards.

Oh and for those not in the beta Game Trailers has some gameplay footage up

I keep getting "failed to join game" message. The one time i did manage to get into a room it seemed like everyone was from my country and people started to leave since the room wasn't getting full. If the multiplayer is region protected somehow, it is going to be a bitch to get a game going for me.

Did the exact same thing last week and didn't get in. :(

I think probably the biggest "balance issue" right now is that Team Isaac naturally works together because they all spawn together and have fixed objectives to work towards. Team Necro spawns all over the place and each individual can easily choose to go off and do their own thing. This results in clueless pubbies doing OK as Team Isaac but shitty as Team Necro.

The same sort of thing used to happen all the time in Natural Selection, but was offset a bit because as a server based game, you just played on good servers where people knew how to play as aliens. Not sure how it will bang out in a P2P game. Either you need a decent crew to play with, or hope that the game catches on enough that Necro strats become widely known.

Yeah I got it myself last night after the server patch, it's still busted (however it's slightly less busted now).

The auto respawn point selection AI for Necromorphs tries to pick the spot where you'll be the biggest help. We have added one wish list from the beta testers which was to have the UI remember your last selected Necromorph, we have found that it actually changes how some people play as they'll wait for a stronger unit since it's already selected.

One of my biggest fears is the pure team nature of the game, namely with people who don't know how to play it can be frustrating.

One of my favorite games when I was coming up through college and online gaming (with graphics) really started to catch on is a game called Netrek. On that game I'd play on servers where you had to answer a multiple choice test on the correct game strategy in order to even play the game. Teamwork was/is so critical on that game that you weren't even allowed to play it unless you knew how to play.

i've found myself digging back into my L4D versus mentality when playing as the necros. Isolate and gang up and set ambushes at key points. Some of the longer notched hallways are great choke points, especially for the ranged attacks. I'll really loving the spitter now, very powerful.

Tried it, hated it, and really have no intention to spend any time with it in retail. This game type should've just been a co-op mode with waves of Necro A.I like Horde mode/Fire fight. They could've thrown in the objectives and you would've had a solid extra mode, but this is just junk to me.

Things I liked:
Death Animations
Graphics
Controls

Things I didn't like:
Necros are piss weak and just rack up deaths easy as hell
Baby Necro going on walls and stuff gave me a headache
Didn't like it wouldn't save what I wanted to play
Didn't like not knowing where I'm getting shot from half the time
Didn't like the Necro A.I voice talking to you(If this is going to be a story element in Dead Space 2...I'm sorta worried where the hell the story is going to go now)
Didn't like spawn system
Didn't like how long it took to get into a game
Didn't like how long it can take to kill an Isaac

All around I could probably list more, but the truth is I don't like it at all. It's not my cup of tea for a multiplayer experience, but maybe some others will get a kick out of it. I don't see this being anyones "go to" multiplayer game either, and that's really why it's such a huge waste of time and money from the developers to have made this when the community was pretty adamant that they'd rather have a co-op mode than a multiplayer crap fest.

I'm still going to buy Dead Space 2 because I loved DS1 so much, but I'm pretty fickle that if enough crappy reviews come out before it hits that I'll probably drop my pre order and rent it instead.

I wish the spawn points were illuminated or something. It was really confusing as to where you could spawn (and actually choosing the point as well) at first. A small tutorial of sorts in the beginning would be great.

how many matches did you play?

@Minamu: necro spawns? they are. i just wish it was a little easier or faster to use the pre-spawn cam to fly over to the other side of the map

Anyone want my PSN Beta Code?
I can't tell who actually got a code from the posted spreadsheet, so first to PM me can have it.

EDIT:
And it's gone!

Well, I meant that they should be illuminated independent on the fly-cam cursor so you can see them from a distance automatically :) The whole flying cam thing feels a bit odd as well :) Must play more. Might get used to it ^^

play as Necromorph is not fun at all

It can be fun, but playing as the Humans is always much more fun. I hope they find more to do with the Necromorphs.

Another problem is having to mash X... while playing as a Necromorph it's not bad (because you initiate the attack, you're prepared to do it), but as a Human it really sucks because occasionally you'll get three of the 'Mash X' events in a row as you have three of the little bastards jumping and grabbing you at once. It's fatiguing for my thumb.

I can't be the only one that happened to, right?

I think it'd be cool if you could unlock the really big Necromorphs like the Tripod or the Brute... only the best of the best and dedicated could do it, and the only way to beat them would be working together as a team. That'd be terrifying as fuck to fight those. But only if there's a limit of one person using that class per game. Just a (maybe not so good) idea.

TK doesn't work at all for me, I don't know why. And mics are still kinda fucked, I can't hear anybody, even if they do have mics. Just static and garbled demonic words (no, it's not the game, it's people trying to talk).

Wait you hate that Necromorphs rack up deaths really easily and that it takes too long to kill a Sprawl officer?

Dunno what you mean about the save thing, it saves my Javelin gun preference for me. I think the Necro AI is obviously just a way for you to be alert as to what to do, it's the simplest way. I do agree about the Lurker though. Playing as a Lurker can be incredibly disorienting at times.

Yeah, it would have been great to play against your team, codecow. Our team of GAFfers would have been a great challenge. We used to just speedrun through matches but stopped after a while because our wins weren't counting (W/L is way more important than K/D in this game, but it was broken).

Also, I love hearing people complain about Necros being underpowered.

One Pack can easily take out a human by himself by running and slashing. Hell, they can even take out two humans together if they're quick to hit and run. The best part about that is the fact that Packs are more for distraction, so being able to do so much killing with them is insane.

Spitters are super powerful. With just two of them spawned, the humans are pretty much fucked unless they are a really, really good team. With 4 of them spawned, it's just over. Spawn camping galore.

I do agree about the lurkers though, they are definitely a little weak. I mean, even if you have all three shots going vertically up a human's body it still takes a while to kill them. Their melee attack isn't all that great either and their pounce is easily countered.

Plus, the spawn anywhere quickly nature of Necros makes them that much better.

aj2good4you2 is proof of the Necro power. He always go positive as Necro and has even wrangled a few perfect rounds. (high number of kills with 0 deaths)

Yeah, I thought it wasn't working for me at first too. See, I was expecting to see items float to me through the air. Instead, they automatically get added to your inventory. You can tell when you've hit an item because there will be a purplish line between you and the item and then the object will disappear.

Nottheguyyoukill: Index finger, man! There's no other way.

That would work if I had an index finger...
Just kidding, haha

I've only occasionally encountered people who work well together as Necromorphs... but it seems people are learning. First day I played, people would go off solo or they would just run around all confused. Played a few matches yesterday and people were actually working as a team, defending, guarding, working together. Even without mics, it seemed pretty instinctive, and that was really good (and fun!). There's no satisfaction quite like saving your buddy after a Spitter gets a hold of him. I feel pretty proud of those moments.

Also, I think Visceral should consider changing the Spitter's name into the Barfer. My little brother was watching me play and he kept calling the Barfer awesome and gross. So now I call it the Barfer.

fry-see-what-you-did-there-scaled.jpg

You really got me there for a second :lol

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if people started calling the spitter for boomer down the road, out of pure laziness.

One trick I use is to continually hop on who ever is carrying the bomb piece on the human side with the baby necro with long claws, as the animation to kill you slows them down greatly, even more so than just trying to run up and kill them, since they cant run anyway.

Since it's a time objective, it all about slowing down the humans, and ambushing where possible until the timer hits zero.
