But I can't dance to dubstep and that's all anyone plays :(

I do see your point, and feel the same way about many genres (house, trance, techno... snooze). But I was just standing up for the exceptions to the rule- and there are always exceptions!

I'm just going to go sit over here in the corner bemoaning the death of IDM.

Icelandic Death Metal?

I don't mind dubstep at all, but like most electronic music, it's better in the right atmosphere. It's also one of those genres where most of it sounds extremely similar and so I tend to just throw one track into the mix every hour or so. It's fantastic in a car with good subs though.

His music is ok.
For the most part I really couldn't care less about him as a person. It does bug me how his stage setup is seemingly a direct ripoff of Daft Punk. I think it was even designed by the same team. He seems like an introverted nerd who got way more popular than he expected to and now has to deal with all this fame bullshit. Yeah, he was able to make money making music and is probably rich as fuck, but that doesn't mean his life is a good time on a moment to moment basis. So, in summary, fuck him, but fuck everyone else too.

Couldn't have been said any better. I'm not one to rule out any genre until I give it a chance...

deadmau5 doesn't have one. I think his photographer does though.
Yeah this was what I was thinking. I knew his photographer posted on GAF, but surely this would have been a bigger ordeal if he did himself.

Never heard of dubstep before. Someone mind linking me to what's considered a good dubstep track?

Also, never knew this deadmouse dude was so hated. I only know him from the Castlevainia thing posted on the first page. And doesn't he have a tree in his house or something?

Hard to hate a guy who's basically a GAFfer.

I see you never met drakesfortune.

It's easier to like/hate the music in and of itself when separating the man's action from his art. It's not like the two in this case are really all that connected.

I mean, the less I think of quaaludes, the more I like The Pianist.

Dubstep is a very diverse genre, it's essentially just defined by heavy bass, with ~140 bpm, and I'm pretty sure a high hat on the 3rd beat (I could be wrong >_>). Basically, what I might think is good dubstep others will abhor. Some songs sound like robots fighting (lol), others sound like odd drum beats with some ambient sounds.

BTW, Dubstep sounds MUCH better if you have a good sound system/headphones. Otherwise, laptop speakers just don't do it any justice.

My avatar is from this song lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opiKgbc8cPk

Some people hate that kind of dubstep. Oldschool dubstep artists like Burial, for example, sound more like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLIb4RSFK00

That is the Deadmau5 I know and love. Such a great ride on that track.

Strobe is one of my favorite prog house songs of all time ^_^

I'd say search for one of the G.A.M.E. threads, but well, you know...

There already is. Don't have a link handy but just search for "electronic music". Second link.

PS. There's no way that vocal made the track better. There are far better mashups that have been done than the "official" vocal.

I would like Skrillex if he didn't put cartoon voices in the middle of everything, but somehow I get the impression that's a big part of his appeal.

I can deal with people saying they think Deadmau5 is a knob, but anybody who thinks he lacks talent doesn't know what they're talking about. The quality of his mixes is really really good, like he doesn't even need to be mastered save for being run through Waves + & a limiter.

Plus I don't care, Raise Your Weapon & Faxing Berlin are great songs.

Yeah, can't argue at all with his production skills. Faxing Berlin, No Pressure, Not Exactly, Hi Friend, that NuFunk remix (which was the first one I'd ever heard) are all stellar... and countless others. Remixes are generally better than his original tracks, though.

$15 000 (conservative estimate) in modular synths and a lot of time.
I was at a friends house reading his copy of rolling stone magazine and there was an article about the modular system. I think they pegged it at 75grand.

My sympathy levels for him are incredibly low. And I feel a strange pride that it happened in Australia. I like some of his tunes, but the guy seems like a dick.

He sounds like a douche, but that's not really that big of a deal when it comes to musicians. I don't really like any of his tracks that I've heard, personally, but that doesn't make me super happy to hear he got decked either.

o_O

Holy shit. And here I thought I was bumping up the price mentally by including the Voyager.

He's got nothing on Daft Punk's Modcan system though. There are mansions that wouldn't cost this much:

I bet it could do the most badass Castlevania theme of all time.

What kind of fucking name is Birdee Num Num. Only in Oz... maybe the UK.

AUS-GAF refuses to take responsibility for crap Valley clubs.

Deadmau5 is not the first, and will not be the last, person to have a rubbish night out in Brisbane.

Huh. I know only only about a half-dozen Deadmau5 tracks, and they're okay, nothing revolutionary. From the handful of youtube videos of his I've seen, he does seem like a twat though, which is what most young personalities who come into money turn out to be.

I've heard this guy's name, but that's about it. I couldn't tell you anything about him if you paid me.

I am... conflicted. Hard to make a judgement.

On the one hand, he made that cool video.

On the other hand, that video clearly shows that he has the forearm of a douchebag.

it's a reference to the Peter Sellers movie "The Party".

so here is the story as i've heard it:

"james didnt punch deadmau5 coz he tweeted that he didnt like the music this is what happned

James punched deadmau5 after deadmau5 swung at him while he was standing between him and his friend (who had told deadmau5s he didnt need to be a wanker after deadmau5 had told him to fuck off/ had his security guy push him for asking for a photo). Thats all there is to it"

http://www.facebook.com/pages/James-cameron-for-hitting-deadmau5/128150157261680

can't verify this for sure yet but other brisbane folks are suggesting that the story deadmau5 tweeted was a load of bollocks.

edit: read this on another forum

"the local dj didn't punch him in the back of the head, he punched him in the face... and only after deadmau5 threw the first punch."

http://www.inthemix.com.au/news/aust/49953/Brisbane_DJ_punches_Deadmau5

edit2: also conflicting reports on whether it was "james", the house dj, or a dj from melbourne.

I don't have any opinion on this topic, because I have no opinion on deadmau5.

Is he worth looking into? I don't have much of a background with electronic music besides hearing it at house parties/clubs. But judging from what's been posted in this thread, his stuff seems all right.

To others, it's (for some reason) a name now synonymous with Dubstep and the first thing people say when someone asks "Hey guys what's some good Dubstep?".

wait, what? since when is deadmau5 dubstep? Pretty sure he does house music

I'd say he's a pretty decent introduction into edm. If you like some of what you've heard from him, Check out Random Album Title/ His "I'm not Alone" remix (Seeing this live was one of the most amazing moments of my life)/ Strobe. His later stuff goes for more electro house, which I don't think he pulls off as good as his progressive house stuff.

To get a feel for what genres of electronic music you might like, check out beatport.com. I find a lot of new music through it, it's a great service/site. For instance, I currently have this new up and coming guy Mord Fustang on loop right now, can't get enough of it :P

who's BT?

another electronic artist, quite good, with a pretty diverse range of music. If you gamed a lot on last gen consoles you might know the songs Kimosabe from NFS Underground or Smartbomb from SSX Tricky.

I think I may have seen this dude at a rave 10 years ago. I dunno I used to pop allot of pills. All that shit sounds the same after 5am.
